QB3 is important here. The starter and backup both are old and injury prone I think you look outside the organization
Also for those saying we don’t need a 3rd QB. The fact is the Jets have started 3 QBs each of the last 3 seasons and 4 of Joe Douglas’ 5 seasons as GM.
"None of the above". If we have to go to QB3 the season is likely over. But in any case a decision would have to be made at that point: 1."Are we still in contention with enough talent to win with a sub par QB?" or 2. "Is there virtually no chance of making the playoffs at that point?". If #1, then I'd look to sign a vet who's competent to hopefully tread water until Rodgers or Taylor return. If #2, then I'd consider looking for a young guy who might be able to be groomed into a starter, and failing that revert to a vet to hold the fort and try to keep the season from being a total waste. In any case, there's no point in using a roster spot on a QB who might not even be able to help the team. The only caveat I'd say is IF a "hidden gem" were to become available that won't be around later. Bottom line: They need to protect Rodgers at all costs.
Yes. Martinez has PS written all over him. All Summer I've been waiting for someone to mention Tyrod Taylor's injury history. This guy always gets hurt when he's hand the keys to the car. When we signed him I was happy, but I also thought there might be a better choice out there.
I’m kind of in the mindset of if we lose BOTH Rodgers and Taylor, then our season is probably done…unless it’s late enough in the year that we are in or on the cusp of making the playoffs… In that case, I don’t think either Peasley or Martinez would be The Guy to get us there…I’d lean more towards a Mike White or Taylor Heineke type guy if available
Am I mistaken in believing that since Covid teams are allowed to carry an emergency 3rd quarterback that doesn't count against the cap?
I think you were right during the Covid year or years, but that's no longer true. If any team wants to have their #3 QB active for a game, he has to be on the roster.
Ok thanks for the clarification. Hopefully we can stash Martinez on the practice squad in case another disaster happens.
I saw this crazy fact on Cowherd few weeks ago: Dallas has only drafted 7 Qbs total since Troy Aikman in 1989. Mike White was one of the seven (2018). Super random, slightly depressing as it feels like the Jets have drafted at least 7 since Rex Ryan era.
Smartest thing White could do. The Bills defenders went well out of their way to take him out of two games we played against the Bills in the same season. In a Bills jersey they will stop trying to injure him.
