If both go down early in the season, the season is pretty much over in terms of making the playoffs. If it happens late in the season and the Jets already have a playoff spot locked up, then I'd be all for trading for a player who could help them win a playoff game or two, but doubt they'd get anyone who could get them anywhere near the SB.
That won't work. Reddick has to be here before game 6 or he doesn't get credit for this season, and the Jets will retain his rights next year.
I agree that Clemons has been a disappointment. I don't know that I'd say that Watts has outplayed him by a wide margin, however, but Watts had a pressure or two and half a sack in presseason, which I believe is more than Clemons had.
I don’t think Watts showed enough, but Jaylon Holmes is a hard guy to cut for me. At 290 lbs with position versatility he kind of fills the JFM void if needed. Coaches and players love him, and he stood out last preseason and this imo. Would love to find a way to keep him too. It’s a crowded group for depth, with Floyd also looking good and potentially taking Solomon Thomas role next year. DL is the the toughest position group to trim down this year. We should keep 11.
Takk McKinley looked really good to me. He’s a no brainer. McGregor I’d keep too as Reddick insurance. He might not play much this year, but also very risky to try to sneak onto PS. Love the future upside too much to see him go.
Very nice. I don’t think they will keep 11 DL especially with Hassan hanging in the balance. There might be room for one more WR
They probably won't, but I think they should. Every single one of those 11 guys has earned a spot on the team. Brownlee hasn't. Charles only has with his STs play and he could be replaced. IMO there's not another CB, S, RB, QB, TE, or WR who has been in TC that deserves a spot on the team. The only player that I don't have making the team that deserves to is Surratt. I wish the Jets had another WR worthy of a roster spot. I was hoping Brownlee would be, but imo he hasn't earned that spot. It would be great if there is a WR who is a camp cut who is worthy of being signed. In that scenario, I'd cut either Charles or Holmes to add that WR.
We are amazingly almost in entire agreement on the 53 you posted lol. It made me double look. Only thing I’d add is Surrat looked really good at both LB and specials. He is starting over Barnes based on preseason and might be better than Sherwood even. To keep him would have to cut either an OL or DL or even another LB from your list tho. I agree on both Holmes and McGregor (posted above), and am leaning 11 DL also. Also agreed on Max Mitchell and Brownlee not essential holds and better suited as possible PS guys. You kept Levao which is interesting and possible, I didn’t key in on him much. Any preseason or camp buzz about him? Would hate to repeat last year when they cut Colon hoping they could get him on PS but he got scooped up. WR Smith might have an outside shot to make it too.
I totally concur we have a rich man problem at DL and they all earned it. As did Surratt BTW. I’m iffy at WR and we lack depth. I’m hoping a jewel shakes loose during the cuts that we can grab to bolster that.
If front office still looking for a cut wr off waivers. i heard tim patrick is on trade block. Would of loved sutton but patrick is no slouch. Hes 30 but hes also big at 64 and on espn said if they cant find partner they will cut
I would not keep Charles, Brownlee, or Yeboah. Yes, we need bodies at WR, ST, and TE, but these are PS level players, and we can stash them or someone of their level on PS and elevate whenever we need. There are 53 or more players on this roster deserving spots than these guys.
I agree on Brownlee. For Yeboah and Charles, it's not that simple. The Jets need to keep at least 3 TEs. They can't go in to the season with just 2. They also need STs players. Yeboah is a good STer and he's a better receiver than Firkser. I'd be all too happy to move on from Charles, but unless Boyer and the rest of the CS are convinced that someone can take Charles' place on STs, I think they will keep him. The only two players presently on the Jets roster who deserve to make the final roster that I haven't projected to be on the roster are Surratt and Eguavoen. The Jets aren't going to go into the season with 6 LBs and only 2 TEs that would not be wise.
I think he does. The staff seems to really like him and the front office appears to be aligned which is why they traded away Franklin-Myers to give Clemons more playing time. I dont think either of those guys are taking his spot. Taylor deserves to make the team though
Brownlee looked good in practice, I think he makes the roster. Have been watching Zack Kuntz closely hoping to see him succeed. He and Yeboah got a lot of work as Ruckert missed 5 of the 6 practices I was able to watch in person. At this point Yeboah seems to be ahead but Kuntz is the less experienced player and is a physical freak. The battle between the two could come down to who looked better on special teams. They could also feel that if they want to stash one on the practice squad and ger away with it that they couldn't put Yeboah there without losing him. Lots of tough decisions this year.
No, at least he shouldn't, but supposedly Saleh and Ulbrich love Clemons, so who knows. IMO if he does, he'd better have a lights out year or both Saleh and McGregor will be looking for new jobs. If JD makes the final roster decision, then I can't imagine any way that Clemons would make the roster over either Taylor or McGregor. That said, we have to keep in mind that both of their production in TC, joint practices and in preseason action was against 3rd - 5th stringers. Level of competition matters.
The Jets didn't trade JFM away to give him more playing time. They traded him away to make cap space so they could sign Reddick.
There's always a surprise, just wonder who it will be. I'm sure there'll be strategic about who is most likely to make it unclaimed through waivers. I saw one projection where Xavier Newman was cut with the idea being he has a better chance to make it back to the PS than some of the DL. I wouldn't be surprised if they went heavy on the DL for the initial roster, carrying at least 11. Wonder if one of Carter Warren or Max Mitchell get cut. Can't imagine teams would be lining up to sign either to the active roster given their on-field performance. Maybe they cut Brownlee - another guy I think could make it back to the PS. Don't think McGregor, Taylor or Watts would go unclaimed and all could be future pieces here. Once again though, here we are discussing all of the talented players we want them to hold on to, not rostering guys who are barely rosterable. The degree of talent on this roster from the top to bottom, old and young, is hard to deny
Agree! The cut down discussions have become more difficult the last few years, which is a good sign of an improving roster I agree with the sentiment that we keep the DL to protect them…we can cut one of the bottom end WRs instead as I think the DL would be scooped up ahead of the WRs And as always, there will be one or two guys who make the 53 today only to get cut in the next couple of days as we pick up someone from another team’s cuts…happens pretty much every year
