7/27 KRL Camp Notes from Jets Nation: General Notes - Players still in shirts and shorts - This was the second fan practice and it had extra 11 on 11 periods. Causing practice to run 2:20 - The first "fight" of the summer as John Simpson (G) got into it with a DLineman (?) and had his helmet ripped off Defense Notes - Another solid practice for Michael Clemons, shutting down the edge ("tackling" Braelon Allen for no gain) and getting a "strip sack" on Tyrod Taylor during his reps - Leki Fotu continues his strong camp as he controls and shuts down the running game up the middle - Jamien Sherwood had a huge day as he "flashed" in multiple phases. Getting a "sack" on a delayed blitz against Taylor, being stout in the run game and tackling Isaiah Davis for no gain. And finally knocking down an Aaron Rodgers pass at the line for an incompletion - Takk McKinley is becoming an interesting player to watch as he dominated in his reps and generated three "sacks" in different ways: * He stood up late and stunted inside to take down Andrew Peasley * Following it up by timing the snap perfectly, coming off the edge and "sacking" Peasley again * And finally "sacking" Taylor by beating the OT (Max Mitchell?) with speed - Another "almost INT" by Qwantez Stiggers as he jumped a pass from Taylor to Jason Brownlee. But Brownlee was able to pull the ball out of Stiggers hands for a 10+ yard gain Offense Notes - Strong day for Garrett Wilson, during his reps he made multiple "3rd down" catches to extend drives. Finding a hole in the defense as Rodgers scrambled and making a 20+ yard catch. Making a sweet hands catch with a "toe tap" in a red zone period. And finally catching a 40+ yard TD from Rodgers, which was a product of high level motion manipulation (I'll cover it in the QB Notes) - Another good day for Allen Lazard as he had a TD (during red zone period) but more importantly knew where to be when Rodgers needed an outlet. On one scramble Lazard settled down on the sideline and Rodgers found him for 25+ yards. And finally when the defense was in zone he found soft spots and kept the chains moving - Malachi Corley appeared as he pulled in a diving catch for 20+ yards from Taylor on the sideline - It seems that Tyron Smith is on a pitch count, as practice ran long he was replaced by Olu Fashanu at LT QB Notes - Aaron Rodgers was sharp again but let's get to his daily "motion manipulation" which got Wilson a 40 yard TD: * On the play Rodgers emptied the backfield by sending the RB (Allen) into motion to a WR spot. Pulling an LB out of the middle of the field * He then motioned Corley from his WR spot into the backfield. Bringing a CB into the middle of the field * Rodgers then changed the protection and kept Corley in to block * As the ball was snapped the CB came on a blitz, but all of the manipulation cause a huge void in the seconadary. And Rodgers hit Wilson on a layup throw for the TD Standouts - Aaron Rodgers - Garrett Wilson - Allen Lazard - Jamien Sherwood - Takk McKinley
You're welcome. I don't know if there is a practice tomorrow, but if so, someone else is going to have to hunt down the reports/tweets. I'm going to be busy all day.
How is Malachi Corley doing? I haven't heard his name mentioned even once with regard to his performance in training camp.
He's been mentioned a couple of times. A couple of days ago, he ran a great route, faked out the defender covering him, and was open by 5 yards but Taylor overthrew him. That same day, Saleh said that Corley had a long way to go with his route running. Yesterday, he made a sliding or diving catch from Taylor, and then I think caught another pass.
Hopefully the Jets figure out ways to get him the ball out in open spaces and let him do what he do...
BroadwayAaron said: ↑ They have a guy who can run every route in Wilson. They have a physical deep threat in Williams. I don’t think you have to think too hard about why they covered the best YAC guy in the country who does all his work underneath. IDF said: Guys don't automatically reproduce their college numbers in the pros--I'd be happy if he's better than Xavier but I have my doubts since I think Xavier is getting better and with a QB is probably fine. I think the Corley pick is redundant. Hope you're right that he's a stud. BroadwayAaron said I have no idea how you could watch tape of Corley and say that he’s redundant. Who’s game does he resemble that we already have? He’s redundant in the sense that he plays the same position as a guy that already plays it right now but he is better with the ball in his hands. I’m pretty confident in saying that. @BroadwayAaron ?
I don’t think the pick is redundant but I do think it’s hopeful to think that Corley, who is essentially a runningback running underneath drag routes, will blossom into a big time contributor in the short term. He played well against power 5’s but he got drafted where he did because he caught the ball and ran past or ran over 180 pound corners and safeties in double A ball. The wild card is if he’s coached up and adapts to the NFL in developing a real route tree. If he does, he’s physically gifted enough to rock the NFL. If he doesn’t, he can’t play RB on drags in the big leagues forever.
I think, at least to start, he’ll be lined up in the slot or the backfield and dribble out to the flat or run crosses and drags within 5-10 yards of the line of scrimmage and he’ll be an outlet for Rodgers. We have GW and Mike Williams who can go deeper, we have Conklin who can work the middle, and he’ll be the underneath guy. If his game translates from college he’ll demand a bigger role but for now, I think he provides a nice skillset
Conklin and Ruckert! I have a feeling this is going to be Ruckert's breakout year if Rodgers stays healthy - we'll see.
Looking like a redshirt year for Corley Between him and Fashanu, those are heavy resources into backup/depth players -- Brock Bowers has looked great at Raiders camp btw
apparently not according to the ganggreen collective definition. Is superfluous a better word? But I actually thought of you in this thread since I perceived you were a big proponent of the pick--was wondering if you stand by that or have changed your opinion. Wasn't expecting 'tude.
Sorry everyone. Was down at the lake with the wife's family from Texas Friday-Sunday with virtually 0 cell signal. Thanks to @NCJetsfan for picking up the slack for me for the last couple of practices! Gonna catch up on today's practice now.
Connor Hughes: Look! Pads! (But also no Haason Reddick) #Jets Aaron Rodgers & Joe Tippmann: The combination has provided a stability in middle of #Jets offense Aaron Rodgers first INT of camp. He hit Allen Lazard over the middle on an in route. Lazard dropped one right in his hands. Popped up in the air & Chuck Clark got it. #Jets Malachi Corley getting some action here with Aaron Rodgers. No Morgan Moses. Yes Tyron Smith. The #Jets also practicing closer to the end zone near the patio, so I can say with full confidence that Jermaine Johnson is rushing the RIGHT side if you are looking from behind the defense. #Progress The #Jets replaced Allen Lazard with Malik Taylor after the drop. Braelon Allen had a couple really nice runs to start practice here. He’s a player I think fans should be excited about. Curious how he’s used #Jets Chippy day so far for the #Jets. It’s hot & everyone in full pads. Checks out #Jets TE Jeremy Ruckert injured on first play of this set of team drills. Nearly a botched handoff on the next play that did not make Rodgers pleased. Source of Rodgers’ frustration was a couple bad snaps from Tippmann. Want to note that Jermaine Johnson rushed other side. So they’re rotating him today. Ruckert is back
