Funny you used 1960's as an example. At that time the apostrophe was considered proper.

 

I hate when people who use the words "Repetitive" and "Redundant" in the same sentence.

 

Was it? That's interesting, I didn't know that.

I thought that as there was nothing missing and it's not possessive the apostrophe was incorrect.

I wonder why it was considered proper then.

Edit: Btw '60s is obviously fine.

Edit: Further quick research suggests 1960s is British and 1960's is American.

Do we have any US teachers in here who can confirm/deny?

1960s looks better, to me but that may just be personal opinion.

 

Pretty sure most of my teachers from the middle of the last century are dead. I'm not sure they were ever alive.
