Just turned on the TV (Paramount TV network) and was reminded that at least part of Forrest Gump is a war movie, with a pretty intense battle scene.
It was one of the early WW 2 films made after the war. It follows a unit from getting off the beach during an invasion and moving inland. A lot of the action happens off screen which adds to the confusion of what these guys are going through. While not as intense as most of the films mentioned, it feels more honest as to what was going on.

John Wayne was the real life version of how they depicted Captain America in that first movie, parading him around like a symbol of American Freedom and giving him every role that they thought would reinforce that. Most of the roles he played were John Wayne. As a person, though, I think he was pretty cool.
I love Gregory Peck. Great actor! To kill a mockingbird, moby dick, boys from Brazil. That man had gravitas.

Anyone looking for an unusual war, or more accurately, post-war movie I recommend a Danish film, Land of Mine. The story is about a group of German POWs, all teenagers, reflecting Hitler's desperation at the end of the war. The group, under the supervision of a Danish sergeant, is assigned the task of removing the hundreds of mines planted on a Danish beach by the German Army earlier in the war.
