https://x.com/snyjets/status/1790028819161665652 Good PR move. Establish the scapegoat if things go wrong right away. Why couldn’t they replace him? Doesn’t seem that difficult, teams do it every offense. That tells me they didn’t really make a concerted effort to do so.
I'd assume it's because they couldn't fire him and no one wanted a job that involves Aaron Rodgers undoing all their work to do what he wants.
I don't see the point of replacing Hackett. He is only here as a figurehead anyway. The offense will be dictated by what Rodgers has done over his career.
I could see Hughes’ report being true because the position coaches took some odd changes this offseason. Usually when someone moves on they do it right after the season. it seemed like the changes here occurred later in the offseason. As if these position coaches were waiting to hear if Hackett was going, and when they heard he wasn’t, that’s when they decided to leave
I can't imagine anyone passing up this golden opportunity of getting no credit for the offense, having no say in your offensive personnel, and playing 4th fiddle to a narcissistic 40 year old thrower who smokes weed with the kids on the team.
Not a bad gig if you can get it. I'm sure guys like Favre, Manning and Brady didn't say: okay I'll execute your offense, after a HOF career when they moved on. If they fire Hackett, any new OC will be running things they way Rodgers wants to, so what's the difference who's holding the position?
Favre is the guy that is closest to Rodgers' situation (IMO) and the dude basically got his head coach fired after one season with the Jets. That's a cautionary tale to me. I think it's difficult to compare situations though, since those guys are all totally different personalities. (In addition to the scenarios and orgs involved being quite different in terms of historic competence)
It was initially reported by Hughes and others a few months back that the Jets were looking to add someone to the staff, ostensibly to create a sort of "mastermind group" to run the offense. There were no takers because if they don't make the playoffs, everyone is gone anyway. Sounded like another clusterfuck in the making even back then.
They couldn't fire Hackett because of his close relationship with Rodgers. They were looking to bring someone in to basically take over play calling or supervise Hackett. I've seen it speculated that Woody didn't want to pay 3 OCs (he may still be paying LaFleur), although I don't know how accurate that is. I think it is more that whomever the candidates were didn't want the job because they'd have to deal with the Jets dysfunction, Hackett, Carter, Saleh and other other questionable offensive assistants. Also, that coach would have know that this was likely a "make the playoffs or be fired" year for the CS. Would you have taken the job with those circumstances? I'm surprised that anyone was even willing to interview and consider the job.
I'm not talking about personalities. I'm talking about a HOF QB like the ones I mentioned going to a new team. They aren't going there to learn a new offense. If you're a team owner and investing huge sums of money to gamble on an aged QB bringing success to your franchise, you're going to want to be sure the old dog doesn't have to learn new tricks. You will want your young dogs to learn his tricks. Same with Rodgers, he will run the plays he is comfortable with.
Meh. While true, there’s only 32 of these gigs. Pep Hamilton is out there as an example. There are a bunch of nobody position coaches out there who I’m sure would love being Rodgers whipping boy.
the old dawg has to learn new tricks though. otherwise he should hang em up. The league is evolving and offensive playcalling has changed a lot since 2009. I wish the Jets had some balls to tell Aaron Rodgers he doesn't in fact own the team and that his buddy Nathaniel Hackett sucks.
