I feel like we filled the holes pretty nicely in this draft. Middle of DL might still need help but where do you think Jets failed to address the roster?
I think they need another SS with Chuck Clark coming off injury and likely gone next year, and A. Davis as the only other SS on the roster. During the draft, it didn't seem as if the Jets thought they had a need at S, yet they've already signed 3 UDFA Safeties. They passed up at least one SS who I thought is a very good prospect, Jaden Hicks, and in a sense passed on Kitan Oladapo with the trading of 2 of their 3-4th round picks, then Oladapo was taken in the 5th round before the Jets picked, but they may have passed on him then too. Evidently, they really don't value the S position much at all. I wanted them to do a mostly offense draft, and they did, so I'm glad about that. I thought that they might take a DT, and maybe an Edge especially after they traded JFM, but am glad they didn't. I know they must have been tempted to take some DT.
Would you have drafted a DT and SS if you were the GM? If so, whom would you have taken and in what round? I was genuinely shocked that he didn't take a S. When he didn't I thought that the Jets must have been happy with who they have or didn't value the position or something, but then they've signed something like 3-4 safeties as UDFAs, so they did see the need. Instead of doing that trade down with Green Bay (which made no sense to me), I think they should have taken a S. I would have taken Jaden Hicks. I also liked Khristian Boyd DT, and think I would have taken him in the 5th or 6th round.
Would have taken a DT and signed a vet RB and safety. Figure out the money with a restructure. Safety market this year looks like the rb market of last year.
One hole couldn't be filled in the draft... the coaching, particularly on offense. Whether it's Saleh, or what's his name, the OC, the hope is that the NH/AR offense of years past, will translate to beating present-day opposing defenses. The other hope I have is that the Vets on the team, are up to the task of teaching the younguns, since teaching & developing young offensive talent under Saleh, hasn't been very successful. As for the draft, happy with #1, ok with #2 (would've preferred a taller WR, in the Corey Davis mode). Kinda unhappy with JFM trade. But that they gave up so little, leads me to wonder if something else is brewing with the Broncos? A WR? Imagination is wonderful as a Jets fan. .
Wide Receiver, safety, defensive end, backup running back, backup guard Hang on, this could be a bumpy ride.
We have depth issues at just about every position and about $50 million in dead cap sitting on the books, making it virtually impossible to address. If any starter goes down at corner, safety, linebacker, guard, WR or TE, we're in trouble.
New set at Management >>biggest worry Compare how the Knicks have looked with Thibs at HC over last 2 years vs Jets
They’re hedging a lot of things on defense on the depth of the defensive line and Mosley/Quincy except we’re not as deep on the defensive line anymore. I’d say Sauce too but they’re content letting him rot on the offensive right side to cover clear outs teams have no intent on throwing the ball to. Imagine if Mosley or Quincy miss significant time? For as unlucky we’ve been with injuries on offense, we’ve been incredibly fortunate on defense.
Good!! We have a defensive HC who can’t HC his way out of a paper bag. By the fact of him being labeled a defensive coach the expectation should be that he can create a great defense without needing every position filled with superstars and backed up by 16m DT’s that play in a fucking rotation.
If Mosely or Quincy go down, we're screwed. Chazz Surratt does not strike fear into the hearts of offensive coordinators.
Yup, they have 2 HUGE holes. The HC and the OC. Too bad we couldn't remedy those with this (mediocre) draft. I see another 6-11 or 7-10 season on the horizon with these cats running the show.
Yeah I don’t disagree but the reality is that he’s not a great defensive coach and we don’t our scheme anyone for the most part. We play pretty much the same defense every play with a blitz here and there.
Actually according to Woody's own words, our defensive HC will now be helping Hackett coach the offense.
Our roster is in great shape. Other than the YAC-King competing with Gipson for the starting Slot WR, our entire draft is for depth.
You say that as if it's a bad thing. You do realize that last season went down the drain because the Jets didn't have a quality backup QB, quality depth on the OL, and no solid backup behind Breece. Cook was awful. This offseason not only gave the Jets a solid backup QB, it gave them a great starting OL and solid depth at LT (as well as most likely the Jets' starting LT for the next 10-15 years) and Fashanu is likely to start at least 3-4 games maybe more, great depth at RB behind Breece, and two more weapons at WR. In addition, Allen and Davis give the rushing attack a dimension it didn't have, namely a power RB for short yardage and the Red Zone, and Corley gives an entirely new dimension to the passing attack. With Conklin and Corley threatening the middle of the field short and intermediate, G. Wilson and M. Williams spreading the field in the intermediate and deep areas, it will keep opposing DCs up at night. Also, one never knows but the Mr. Irrelevant pick or one or more of the UDFAs could come up huge. The top UDFA the Jets signed, Leonard Taylor, has a ton of talent and is a perfect backup to Q. He could make a big contribution this season as well.
I think the roster is in better shape than it was last year at this time…mostly because I feel better about backup QB and OL as well as receiver. On OL, we were counting on Duane Brown and Becton…now we are counting on Smith, Moses, and a top 11 tackle who should be good…that’s an upgrade. At WR, I feel better about MW and Corley behind GW than last year when we had Lazard and a few undrafted types like Gipson, Charles, Taylor, etc. RB feels better as well…I get Cook was a bigger name but there were plenty of posts here about how he was washed up and that proved to be true…a rookie power back though unproven I think is at least a wash if not better. On D, I hated to lose Huff, but Reddick is a stud and can replace Huff’s production…losing JFM is not devastating really but he was a good rotational guy and we lost him for pretty much nothing…also lost some depth on the IDL so we’ll see…DL was a strength and at least at this point, it feels like a wash or perhaps a step back (would have loved to have drafted some bodies here on Day 3) so we’ll see how it goes. Safety may also be a step back…not sure who the heck is back there anymore so this also feels like a bit of a step back and this is another area I would have liked to have addressed on Day 3. Clearly JD didn’t have any worries here so we’ll see. In short, I feel a lot better about our offense, perhaps at the cost of a slight step back on D, but that’s a trade off that is acceptable…we HAD to improve on O even at the cost of the D having to take a slight step back. I can live with that… So yah, I think we are in better shape than a year ago…but just like last year…it all depends on Rodgers…IF he can stay healthy and IF he can play well, we should be in good shape. If he goes down, while we are better off than a year ago, I have no delusions of Tyrod Taylor taking us deep into the playoffs…so our season will hinge on Rodgers again in my opinion.
