This almost feels like a Tell. Like maybe Douglas is trying to deal AVT on draft day and the question made him shit himself because he wasn't expecting to hear the name.

Maybe this has caused him to realize that picking guards in the top 20 is stupid, and what’s even more stupid is trading other assets to move up and do it. This guy has blundered plenty of really good resources the jets have had which could have been used more efficiently to make the team better.

All of these missteps he's made has to make you wonder just how he managed to fleece the Seahawks so badly in the Jamal Adams trade.

It was a lot to move up for a guard. If AVT was had been staying healthy though, I think he's one of the best OGs in the NFL and the trade looks ok. The player he moved up for was a hit, but the injuries and the price are knocks. I don't love that trade up, but I don't hate it either. Let's hope he can start staying healthy and dominating.

What does hurt is that the guy who ended up being chosen at 23 has been a really good OT... Also has had some injuries I believe but not as much missed time as AVT

Very possible. They are saying Fuaga is a better fit at guard. Douglas drafts him and then trades AVT for a pick the next day

Now that I think about it... he's probably not tradeable right now due to his injury designation.

Correct, he is not tradable right now, and for the same reason it would be pretty dumb to effectively sign a 15 mil extension.

JD's track record speaks for itself, but it's wise to not sign extensions a few days before draft since it could tip ones hand. There's no benefit to giving other GM's added information. Not sure Joe is thinking this way--the adage even a fool seems wise when he keeps his mouth shut comes to mind.

Getting a 4th for Herndon was a nice coup too--he's gone downhill

JD is a bad scout but a good negotiator. He even negotiated himself into a longer contract than we normally give GMs.

I'm ready to move on. I liked his plan initially. He talked a good game about building up the OL, which we still desperately need 4 years later, and that tells you all you need to know.

JD almost did a full Ralph Kramden trying to answer that question.

It would be a day 3 pick for AVT.

Completely agreed. He's talked since he got here about fixing the O-line. He's nearing the end of that six year contract and the line, so far, has been arguably worse than it was before he got here.

In fairness, he has improved the line this offseason, but it's with older players and ones that have significant injury histories. He really needs to get it right on some O-line talent through the draft.

This feels like a player that dragged his ass for his entire contact woke up and realized it was a contract year and he's now working his ass off. Where was this when Rodgers was traded for, or when Wilson was drafted?

wow. Why is JD being blamed for AVT (or Becton's) injuries?

One can fairly argue the merits of the selections at the time, in which case I would say JD looked pretty decent. Yes a good OT was selected later in the round (Minn) but when AVT was selected Becton still had a lot of promise. Of course another tackle would be nice but AVT was a good pick. (For the record at the time i wanted us to trade down from 2 to pick up Sewall (hopefully) and more assets.

But Becton's history and AVT's injuries leading to their demise or issues -- why is that Joe's fault?

I guess it might under the theory that the buck stops with him, but the selections in and of themselves seemed decent. More direct causes are crappy fields, changing roles, even perhaps crappy strength and conditioning and coaching

I don't have a problem with those selections. I do have problems with his non-round 1 selections

The injuries are the fault of Woody and the Maras for building such a shit field that everyone gets injured on.

Complaining is easy; do you have any data to support your stand? Did the field installed a year ago perform better or worse than any other field in the NFL as far as injuries are concerned?
