He did, and I can understand why you and others (including the Jets) wouldn't want him back, but if it's true that the Jets are changing to a scheme that would be one that he could excel in, that could change things. Also, no one's advocating to bring him back as a starter, but rather as the swing OT. He knows most of the team, and they could do worse than bring him back. That said, he probably wouldn't want to come back, and probably wants to start elsewhere. but if he was amenable to coming back on a reasonable deal, he could prove to be a solid RT in this scheme, and if the Jets can draft their future LT in the draft, they'd have their starting OTs for next season and the foreseeable future set.

I don't know, NC. The guy looked awful out there. Most sacks allowed in NFL, that's saying something. I get your point about the scheme, but there is no guarantee he will be good in the new scheme either. He looked very slow. Also, he did have one healthy season, but does that erase all the injury concerns? I guess he could be an emergency option if he signs for a few mil, but like you said he may not want to come back. Openly criticized coach Carter too, which Carter certainly deserves, but may not be the best idea since we kept Carter for some reason. I don't see it personally, but crazier things have happened.

I agree that it most likely won't happen, and I'm not even saying that it should, just that stranger things have happened in the NFL, and there are worse moves that JD could make. Yes, he was awful last season, but he hadn't played in what, 2 years? The blocking scheme had changed, he started out as a backup RT (which I don't believe he had ever played before), and if Trainer is right it wasn't a scheme conducive to Becton's skill set. Fans and NFL GMs and CSs like to think that every player can be equally good in every different scheme, but that just isn't so. I think the reality is that it's at least 50-50 and maybe even much less that are able to adapt and play in any scheme. If examining players for scheme fit wasn't important then JD shouldn't have changed the way the Jets' scouts evaluate draft prospects, and Belicheat shouldn't have spent so much time and energy looking for prospects who fit his scheme regardless of their draft ranking.

IMO the crux of the Jets problems are JD's decision to hire Saleh. Saleh brought in OCs whose schemes didn't fit JD's two #1 draft picks, Becton and Zach, and on top of that Saleh brought in inexperienced and bad offensive coaches. It's little wonder that both Becton and Zach failed.

I think he'd be fine as a cheap backup. Agree, he sucked in pass protection.

I was not aware we are finally changing our OL scheme. Much needed from my perspective. Any idea where there is more info on that?

My simplistic view point is this. If there is no real advantage to letting him go for cheap then don’t. Keeping him through training camp and see what develops in the way of injury, the impact of the new system I just heard about, and injuries across the NFL might change thing considerably to our advantage. If not, he could be a Final Cut.

If we’re talking Becton, I don’t think it’s an option, right? He’s already a free agent so there is no keeping him I thought. We didn’t exercise his fifth year option. If we wanted him back, we’d have to go sign him.

I could be wrong, but that was my understanding

I want Becton back if he can play FB.

He looked bad blocking linemen last year, but just imagine being a LB trying to take that on behemoth with a head of steam behind him-- never mind trying to disengage and get to Breece....

My understanding too, which is why I don't think we'll see him in a Jets uniform any more. But you never know. If somehow he agreed to come back for a reasonable amount, and be a backup, I'd be okay with that, especially if they go to a "man blocking" scheme. But I won't hold my breath.

he's way to tall to play full back, nor would he even want to. LT get paid, FB's don't.

No, and I'm not certain that they are changing the scheme. In post #36 (on page 2) of this thread, @Trainer said:

He could better answer the question why he thinks they will be changing the scheme.

The cowboys had success using Edoga at OG--If Becton can play there he'd make a valuable G/OT backup.

I think Becton would get knocked on his ass all day long playing guard. He can't get low enough.

I'm really surprised Tippmann can get low enough to play center, but those two guys clearly aren't playing with the same level of dexterity.

GREAT article! Thanks for sharing it. I hope that Michael is right. I think this will help Hall and Abanikanda, and the Jets' offense as a whole. It will earn the Jets more respect.

You're right that if the Jets want Becton back, they'll have to call his agent and bid for his services. I doubt that he'd want to come back, but if they are going to run more gap plays, that might convince him to come back.
