More so because Pat Ryan was more mobile behind a patchwork line and hadn't gotten the shit knocked out of him all season.
Damn Hackett...You're picking players I didn't even see! With that said I would definitely wear a O'Brien or Gastineau throwback. But it would of been nice at least seeing those guys to give a legit argument/answer.
Exactly they get to the playoffs and the next year they go to Nagle, so stupid. O'Brien was a very solid QB, even an all-pro
I think O'Brien might have held out that year, 1992. He and Coslet were never buddies and that was one reason Nagle got the job, that and the 5-0 preseason.
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't we spend our first round pick on Nagle to get him in the Supplemental draft.
No, we took him in the second round of the 1991 draft, but it was the first pick we had in that draft. We took WR Rob Moore in the 1990 supplemental draft, forfeiting our #1 pick for 1991. The sad thing is Ron Wolfe was running our draft and he traded up to try and get Favre, but Atlanta took him one pick ahead of us. So we got another QB from a southern school, Browning Nagle--50/50 chance at that time, once again we got the wrong 50.
He han a shit o line, but had decent skill players and a nice D. Freeman, roger vick, Mickey Shuler, Toon, Walker, Jo Jo Townsell. The front 7 was really good but we never had a secondary in thoes day ( I was in 4th grade and a jets fan). I had a poster with Shuler, Clifton, klecko, Toon, KOB, Mark G., and Walker....was awsome...so 80's i vote favorable jst because I saw some deep shots to walker and toon when I was a kid.
I voted positive for the same reasons stated above. My memories of KOB are mostly positive. I loved the shootouts with Marino and the Dolphins! Those were very different days....between Namath, Todd and O'Brien we use to air it out down the field a bunch. With that type of offense, you tend to have more picks and sacks than the "West Coast Offense" that so many of us seem to run today. Mike
I agree with every word! If Kenny was a DOLPHIN instead of a JET, he would have been great! Imagine MARINO a JET without an Offensive Line! How great would he have been?
BINGO! Kenny O could've been a very good QB behind a real oline. Instead he got pounded in David Carr esque fashion.........
At least O'Brien got a couple good years in when the team was still good. Carr got beat up on bad teams from day one.
O'Brien was maddening to watch. He never learned to throw the ball away. I understand that QB has to stand in (or step up) in the face of the rush but he took a ridiculous amount of sacks. We got rid of Todd because he threw so many picks and then KOB comes in and takes a zillion sacks. I also associate him, fairly or unfairly, with the inability of the NYJ to get over the hump in the late 80s. So, that's why I voted unfavorable. TBTF
I'm sorry, but I have to say unfavorable, mostly because he never performed well in the postseason whenever he was given a chance. His overall PS record was 0-2, and his only complete postseason game was the 1991 WC vs. the Oilers at Houston under Bruce Coslet, which we lost 17-10. He threw three INTs in that game, including one crucial one in the Houston EZ in the third quarter. I appreciated his good 1 1/2 years from 85 to 86, and his Dolphin-killing penchant. But he was as flawed as every QB we've had since Namath.
Steinberg joined the Jets in 1990. O'Brien played only his last three Jets years under Steinberg. Blame Mike Hickey for the horrible O-lines (you left out Mike Haight). And remember that early on there were a couple of good vets on that line in Joe Fields and Dan Alexander. Freeman McNeil ran for 1,331 yards the same year O'Brien led the league in sacks with 62 for 399 yards lost. So the line wasn't always a total disaster.
