Chicago is going to take Caleb Williams and try move him. They would then have no leverage with Fields and he could likely be had for cheap.

I know there are strong opinions on the kid, especially considering Joe Douglas made the wrong move taking Wilson ahead of him, but damn at this point to get a cheap reclamation project with his talent?

IMO it would give some hope. I have little hope that busted 40 year old Rodgers is the answer

I think the idea is good but it feels like Chicago will be able to get at least a 2 for Fields. If we're somehow able to get him for a Day 3 pick, I wouldn't hate it.

However, something to consider is the potential contract. This year will be very cheap for him (~6M) but we'd have to either get him to sign a 1-2 year extension to lock him up for 2025 and beyond or exercise the 5th year option on him for 2025 which is projected to be 25M, fully guaranteed. Which means we're looking at ~50M-75M being tied up in 2 QBs for 2025 (Rodgers cap hit is expected to be either 23.5M or 51.5M, depending on where you look). That's a lot of money to have tied up in 2 guys where only 1 will be on the field at any given time.

Finally, would Fields even want to come here knowing he's most likely sitting behind Rodgers for at least 1, hopefully 2, year(s)? Gotta think he's going to want to go to a team where he's at least competing for the starting spot. Will Chicago do right by him or take the best offer available? Guess we'll see soon enough.

I don’t think the Jets would ever think creatively enough to make a move like that nor would our dopey coaching staff have a clue as to how to try to make him successful.

Fields needs to go to a good franchise and sit for a couple years before getting another opportunity while he hopefully works on his mechanics and vision.

I would say his chances of starting may be better here backing up Rodgers than anywhere else. It worked for Zach Wilson.

Fields in all likelyhood will be traded to the Pats for a 2nd or third rounder, and they will jump on the top WR ( Harrison) with the first pick. Fields as a back up for the Jets will not really make sense for Chicago to consider.when there is more to be had as a starter elsewhere.

I was going to create the same thread.

This is the type of out of the box move that could set up a franchise long term, while also filling the critical backup role in 2024.

I'd like a QB that is tough, can pick up firsts with their legs when opportunity presents, and can provide a spark off the bench if needed in 2024.
Fields at only 24 checks all those boxes, with upside as future starter.
He has experience, could be had for relatively cheap, and is a very good candidate for a reclamation project.
It would be a good spot taking time to reset and learn from Rodgers.

JD does nothing outside the box though, doesn't seem to learn from past mistakes, and has no incentive to look beyond 2024.
Get ready for another Simean or Flacco again...and a potential repeat of 22 AND 23 seasons, followed up a complete 2025 rebuild with a bad cap situation.

When A-aron gets hurt again, the offense can just be.. "run kid run!"
It may be just enough to keep the Defense off the field a bit longer to compete...

in terms of contract, i believe Carolina exercised Darnold's 5th year option when we traded him there.
It would be same situation with Fields, with the 5th year option taking us through 2025 season.

Can anyone confirm if this is possible?

Yes, and that's what the Panthers did with Darnold, but the cost waaaay exceeds the value

I get your point but there's a big different between being a starter and starting a few games due to injury.

I think he's going to want to go to a team where they think he's "their guy" immediately, not in a couple of years. At the very least, he's going to want to go where he's got a legitimate chance to compete for the starting job this offseason. As I said though, will Chicago give him that chance or will they take the most for him?

It'd be fine to have him on the roster at a low enough cap number

Just looked it up, his fourth year price is super cheap (approx 3.2M), but fifth year option on Fields is in the 25M range and would be fully guaranteed.
    Definitely steep.

Starting QBs are getting 40-50M now tho, and it’s very good chance Rodgers does not play in 2025. We need to get a starter ready.
It would be a 2 yr deal at around 14M avg per year really.
That’s not crazy for a quality backup who will see starting snaps, maybe even start all of 2025.

Comes down to whether you see Fields as a future starter in this league. I think he can be.

Trade down to late 1st round and pick up a 2nd. Take a lineman with the 1st rounder and send the 2nd to the Bears for Fields.

maybe we can get a 4th or 5th for Z Wilson too from somebody

    lets do this thing

I like him and I would want him here but no. This upcoming season is the last year of Sales-Douglas combo. I rather our new regime pick their own QB when they arrive. Don't want to force Fields onto them.

Sad but true. The whole offense could be out for the season next year and anything less than I’d say a win in the wild card round and we need to clean house.

There was mention of this in another thread a while back, and I actually came up with a similar idea of having him sit behind Aaron Rodgers, be back up in case of emergency, and also be potentially the quarterback of the future.

Unfortunately, with the Jets right now, everything is timing and there's no way they'd be able to keep him beyond 2024 unless they pick up his option when they traded for him, which ties up way too much call space and then creates a scenario where they're either forcing Aaron Rodgers out the door in 2024, or sitting this kid without ever seeing him play - assuming of course Aaron Rodgers stays healthy which is very unlikely.

Bottom line, I like the idea, but I don't think there's any way that Jets would or could do it.

Also, I trust Rodgers more than Douglas and Saleh to pick a QB. Allow Rodgers watch some tape for QB prospects and pick somebody in 3rd or 4th round to sit behind Rodgers.
