Why didn’t the Jets cut him in the offseason again? They literally paid him $9MM to stay home.

Carl, Duane, and Dalvin: our highest paid players to hit the free agent market in 2024.

Yet again, the Jets have given guys their last big payday.

Releasing someone instead of paying him $9M to stay home is something a stable and functional franchise would do. That ain't us.

It’s a shame, I was hoping to see Lawson doing a choreographed fuck you dance with his team on the sidelines while we’re getting blown out by the Patriots.

Remember when we were cap rich and then gave Carl Lawson 45 million and Corey Davis 38 million?
    83 million well spent JD.

Then we refused to give Morgan Moses and Mike White 5 million. And instead gave a 40+ year old QB 75 million.

No need to wonder why we aren't rich anymore.

I assumed that not releasing them and instead letting them leave as free agents was on purpose to play the comp pick game, no?

If so, it’s better than cutting them and paying them anyway if they had guaranteed money

I am still getting to grips with the fact Mosley accounts for nearly 10% of the Jets salary cap

The Jets also weren’t in salary cap hell this season because for whatever reason they kept all of these guys on the roster and DEFERRED a lot of the big money for guys like JFM, Mosley, Q, Laken Tomlinson until next year. It makes no sense. It only would’ve made sense if we brought a bunch of short term high priced free agents in this year which for the most part we didn’t minus Dalvin Cook.

So I think your assessment was right. Keeping Lawson on the roster was no skin off our backs this year for the most part in terms of free money.

Actually, it's so much worse. Rather than cutting him, they restructured his contract (by adding dummy years) to sit on the bench. He counts $6+ million on next year's cap while he plays for another team! JD did the same with Whitehead, Uzomah, and Duane Brown. Next year, combined, they count for roughly $20 million on the cap. Thanks JD, ugh....

Jets: let's extend Lawson to buy us some cap space this year

Also the Jets: Lawson is not a scheme fit, let's sit him all year

I don't think T-Rex arms are a scheme fit for anyone.

If we release him after June 1st we could push his dead cap to 2025, which I can see us doing to make more space next year. Were kind of in the same place we were in 2011 when we tried to keep pushing everything back for one more chance. But that was after back to back championship appearances, not 4 straight double digit loss seasons.

Exactly. This reminds me so much of that time and what the future is going to look like, only without the real reason to do it.

Because Joe Douglas doesn't work for the jets--he works for the agents who represent NFL players.

    Lawson $9M
    Cook $7M
    Brown $10M
    Tomlinson $40M
    Uzomah $24M
    Lazard $44M

Did any of these guys do squat for the jets all year? Tomlinson was the worst guard in the NFL in 2023 and was paid like he was one of the best.

Bears repeating, Joe Douglas has no eye for pro or college talent. 1st round picks like Becton, Zach, and McDonald were wasted money also.
So why is Douglas getting another off season to enrich players that nobody else wants and waste our draft picks????

Those are some TERRIBLE free agent signings for sure…no two ways about it…Lawson and Lazard have been healthy scratches for more than a few games now…Tomlinson is not playing anywhere near his contract, neither was Uzomah and for sure neither was Cooks…who just looks so old and slow and just runs into the line every fucking time…no vision at all

    Terrible

I would be up for using a late round draft pick on an actual T-Rex to play edge and see how it works out.

sorry we have too many defensive lineman.
the Jurassic conference is pretty weak anyway. At least nothing like the SEC
