Thats the Jets win percentage since Woody Johnson bought the team. .442 was the Jets win percentage before he bought the team. They've always been trash, Woody is just trying to throw a match in the can. A legacy of poor ownership is this teams biggest issue. Not a QB. Not the OL. Not the stadium. It's just poor ownership, plain and simple.
I am on the record, and will further advance that record, saying that Woody Johnson is the reason the Jets are in the state that they're in. He is an awful awful owner, no other way of putting it. Doesn't know football at all, only cares about money, wants the franchise to be on the front page more than he wants them to win, and whenever he loses any patience with a quarterback, drags a big name in here to fuck up all the plans. I hate the guy.
And not just alike, but identical in how things are carried out. Then there's guys who want to argue that Woody is too dumb and doesn't know football and doesn't have anything to do with it. I'm glad guys like that are not detectives trying to solve a case for me.
You don't have to know football to be a good owner. Of course it helps but it is not a pre requisite. Woody's problem is beyond football. He was born into wealth and he is not a self made man. People born into that much health don't have to fight for their lives. Wish instead of Woody we had somebody who created his/her own fortune. It is also true that Woody doesn't put winning in front of everything. He cares about being on front pages. Money comes regardless so why should he care?
Keep in mind that Bill Parcells had us in an unusually good place when Woody bought the team. We were positioned to do better than we had in the past but after scaring off Parcells Woody just made a series of increasing blunders (Eric Mangini and Rex Ryan being the two bright spots).
Exactly. Woody inherited one of the strongest foundations in Jets history. The last decade has been the true Woody, and it's far worse than even the bad ownership that preceded him.
I hope someone can enlighten me on a couple of things: 1. Does Woody know that he's an absolutely awful owner, or does he surround himself with yes-men who blame the team's misfortunes on GMs, coaches, players, bad luck and injuries; and 2. Who are the people pissing in Woody's ear and telling him that every idea that pops into his bald head is sheer genius. Nobody could be as bad a Woody without help.
I don't think we'll ever know those answers, but I'm sure the reality of it is expectedly bizarre. He actually speaks in that clipped, snobbish, rich fuck way of speaking that I thought only existed in 80s movies like Trading Places. When I saw him at the Rodgers presser, and he shook hands, I thought to myself "you know at some point they brought in a specialist to coach Woody on how to shake hands like a man when he was probably in his 40s, and he still can't figure it out." He's been living in an incubator made of money for most of his life.
I can only take wild guesses at this. 1. I would guess that he does not. The fact that he keeps making the same mistakes over and over tells me that he thinks he's making the right moves but the people who work for him are the ones blowing it and not carrying it out to his expectations. Also, often owners of companies are not privy to what goes on below them. They have a couple of people who keep them abreast, and are not part of the fray. I experience that myself, much much smaller company obviously, but everybody is nice to me, they smile, and they say all the right things, almost none of them tell me like it really is except for the management team members when they come to me about general issues. A good portion of the time it's about someone who was just smiling and happy around me, turns out they are the ones that have issues. So, short version, the boss doesn't always know what's going on. And with something on the scale of what he's working with, he probably speaks to absolutely no one below the upper crust guys. 2. That is a very good question that I can't even imagine the answer to, you would think that someone somewhere would say hey dude, get yourself someone who actually knows football. I can only surmise that he doesn't pay close attention to any of the news, keeps himself strictly immersed in how the team does financially and when things get bad enough that he has to get involved, he takes Instinctive action to better the public perception. That is just off the top of my head, I'm sure if I sat and thought about it for a while I might be able to extrapolate out a bit more.
Year in, year out. I'll say it again and again. Woody does not give a single crap about the Jets. He doesn't care about fans. He doesn't care about wins. He just likes the status of owning a team and being famous. And making money off poor saps who financially prop him up despite despising us. Sent from my SM-S906U using Tapatalk
So true, about his accent, you nailed it (Trading Places) hahaha Anytime I see/hear him speak I find it almost unbearably cringy. How can anyone in the room keep a straight face.
The guy is invisible - any characterizations made about him are pure speculation. Here's mine - he knows almost nothing about football and whatever he knows about the inside workings of the league and its teams is even less. If you lined up the 31 other owners, 31 GMs and 31 retired lawyers all dressed the same I doubt he could correctly identify a dozen. I also think he doesn't care much at all about money because it was always there in his life - does your life change if your net worth is five billion or ten billion? I also think his three notorious qb splashes may have been his own idea or just as easily may have been ideas planted by others but all were designed and permitted far more towards selling seats than improving the product on the field. And he's fine with that.
Ehhhh....my personal opinion is that you are underestimating him fairly significantly. He definitely knows nothing about football or how to run a team - about that I agree. I also agree that he only cares about his bottom line. As for recognizing the other owners - billionaires remember their cronies. He knows them. If you wanna bet he doesn't know the difference between a strong safety and a free safety, or a fullback and a halfback - I wouldn't take that bet. But the qb splashes? That's way too coincidental for my tastes. It fits so neatly with his lack of football knowledge and desire to be relevant. And this may be naive on my part, but I doubt very much the other owners would have approved him to purchase the Jets if he was THAT clueless in a general sense. I also don't think that he would get appointed to a high level ambassadorship if he was as much of a doofus as you (and being fair, others) believe he is.
We can simply agree to disagree. Other owners socialize with their peers; they play golf with them, go to dinner with them and vacation together. Have you ever seen a report or heard of Johnson doing any of these things? There are no required qualifications to be a US ambassador, all it takes is the signature of the president; contributing large sums of money to candidates may be helpful.
What does not socializing with the players have anything to do with it? Agreeing to disagree means you have differing opinions, I'm not disputing that he's a terrible owner who doesn't have a feel for how to be one, or an expertise in the field. I'm simply saying he's more involved than you're stating he is when these off-course incidents happen. In fact, his aloofness towards his players and lack of football acumen actually supports the idea that he meddles for the wrong reasons.
