wins and losses are team success and not really on 1 person or another. I've seen people use record to judge head coaches but thats not 100% fair either. it's never on the GM, they aren't judged in the same way as players/coaches bellichcik is one of the bets examples. he's considered one of the best coaches of all time if not the best. his win percentage as a GM and HC with brady 65%, his win % as a GM without brady 49% his win percentage as a HC w/o brady 47% NFL is too team based to make an argument like that. bellichick didn't become a shitty coach overnight. he just has no talent on the team which is his fault as the GM since he's both. brady covered up a lot of shitty GM moves he's made but he's still a great HC. regardless of that fact he's 2-9 right now
That's wonderful sentiment, but sports is a cruel mistress. And look at the reluctance of owners, who don't see wins. to keep the FO personnel. Hell in some cases it just might be the GM is unhappy with the team's play and removes a HC in mid season. The thing about the Pats, is the longevity of success, for that amount of success I would say he's earned my confidence and tolerance, see also, Reid, Harbaugh,Tomlin. There is no such track record for this regime, its lose, self destruct, and be generally dysfunctional. What's worse is the fundamental principle of building a football team, outstanding O-line players, was not taken as an important subject. Tristen Wirfs, followed with Penei Sewell and a trade up to draft Nagee Harris as a big capable running back. The two O-linemen,have not missed a game, young tackles that could have anchored the O-line for 10 or 12 years. Instead we got Mr. IR and Mr. Can't throw the running back check down. That's a multiple F*up, losing the good players and drafting ones that can't play their positions. And then we can talk about, how ZW is better than SD. St. Joe thought he knew how to swim, he was only wadding in the kiddie pool, and when he went to the adult pool. He had to be rescued from his over-confidence, for that the fans are paying the price.
well owners will never blame themselves lol and yes sometimes they can have outrageous demands. of course woody could fire them. doesn't matter how good or bad they are, he has that ability. typically the best owners let the GM run the team. the GM controls the CS and provides them with a roster they want. the CS is supposed to develop the players and get the players in good positions to be successful and players job is to execute. Wins and losses in the NFL can be tied to elite QBs more then anything. Teams with elite Qbs just win more then teams without one. it's that important of a position and it's veyr hard to win w/o one. As good as tomlin is for example his record w/o ben is much worse then his record with ben. and the GM never was ready for ben to retire even though everyone knew he wasn't. he signed a former bust, drafted rudolph with a late pick who hasn't panned out, and some UDFA named duck out there, and drafted pickett in the 1st finally who isn't panning out. A regime can't have a track record without longevity so it's a self fulfilling prophecy. fire any regime without a tarck record who isn't winning so they can never have a track record. pulling a team out from the gutters takes time and isn't easy. new GMs usually come into bad teams and have to fix mistakes before they can really even build. it's like buying land with a huge hole. you have to fill the hole then build a solid foundation then you can build a house. JDs 1st few years was just filling the hole. then in 2021 he started on the foundation and in 2023 it was supposed to be house building but the contractor blew out his achillies as far as those picks, it's not fair to pinpont 1 possibility. I could argue 29 teams are dumb for passing on TJ watt and say all their picks suck. but every team has different things they are building in different ways. wirfs in hindsight sure but as I explained before he went to play RT on a great line with a HOF QB famous for making his line look good due to quick decisions. becton was put in as the savoir and anchor of a shit line as a rookie with a failing top pick QB and he got rolled up on by a shitty RG who got pushed into him. wirfs could have gotten hurt here and becton could have been great in TB with no injury. thats why you cna't play the "what if" game. sewell wasn't available for us. we needed a QB. we took zach. we did trade up for AVT that draft as well. hajee harris in hindsight was an awful pick. he already looks old and slow and has just been running into piles and is being outshined by an UDFA RB in his 2nd year. meanwhile etienne went 1 pick later and is a better RB so thats an odd thing to pick
The blown draft picks are most certainly relevant, considering they were meant to replace veterans who were on the team. You do know the nature of an expansion draft? You start from nothing (as JD willingly choose), every team in the league is allowed to protect a certain number of players and the remainder are eligible to be drafted (JD didn't remember or choose to ignore that this would not happen in his self imposed expansion attempt.). So now with an almost entirely new roster, **HAND PICKED** by St. Joe. The majority of his draft choices that were supposed to become the core of a winning franchise going forward, I'll be kind, the majority of his picks are not NFL caliber personnel. All this self imposed nonsense, where there, was no consideration of what could go wrong, kinda like the offense, was caused by one person.
