If that were 30 games with the same basic (capable) coaching and talent around him I wouldn't be arguing. But that's not the case. And whereas say Trevor Lawrence had to adapt to two different CS and systems, in his case at least there was improvement in those elements. In Zach's case there has been little or no improvement. That said, I agree - and have posted - that Zach needs to deliver a few 300+ yard/2+ TD games to prove that he can be a guy who can carry a team when it's needed, and he hasn't done that. I still do believe that a good part of that is how they're managing him and limiting him with the game plans and schemes. For some reason (Saleh's ultra conservative approach?) they've kept his hands tied except when it's desperation time and then he does his best, so IDK why they don't keep the handcuffs off him. Other teams with young QBs do, and while those young QBs sometimes (often?) make mistakes they also produce big numbers/games. Still, Zach needs to find a way to do better, no question. I've gone from believing that Zach could be an elite QB when he was drafted, to now thinking he might still become a decent starter under the right circumstances which probably aren't going to happen on the Jets. It's a shame, because I still do believe that if the Saleh and MLF hadn't have been so ignorant and stubborn, they might have been able to develop Zach's potential, but such is the DNA of the JETs - the place where young QBs go to die. But at this point, who is a better option, really? Even if you say Boyle or Simien just for the sake of change, maybe that might work for a game or two - it did with Mike F'n White, right? - but then what? Because after White's Special Day what did he and the Jets do? Meanwhile, Zach's confidence takes another jolt so if you go back to him you're likely to get "Old Zach" and be worse off. There are no better options out there. Even if you think Wentz is better he still would have to come up to speed learning the offense, even a basic version, and then there's the problem of being stuck with a guy who is obviously a malcontent in some form given he's been dropped from 3 teams in 3 years. I get the anger and frustration focused on Zach, some of it rightly deserved, but the problems are much bigger than him. It's like the drunk who shits his pants and when someone tells him he stinks, he goes home and changes his socks. Zach may well not be the future for the Jets, but he is the present. They'd be better off firing Hackett, or at least take the operational OC duties from him - game planning and play calling. And they need to bench the poor performers and put their best 11 out there. Douglas had a chance to assemble a better offensive team than he has - including the CS - and he hasn't done that. I'm not saying he should be fired, but if he doesn't learn from this, he should be.
Dobbs was/is better. But the GM has decided not to upgrade the position. Saying Boyle and Simian are not better is fair so why wouldn’t your GM go get better options. You never ask that? Not to mention we didn’t resign our fine backup MW (who is in Canton) for $3M. So better options argument is manufactured because they want Zach to start. No question Dobbs is better. No question.
So your contention is that nothing else - CS, scheme, surrounding talent - matters when gauging a QB? If that's your stance then we can agree to disagree. But even if I accept your way of measuring QBs, and it's so obvious that Dobbs - or anyone - is better than Zach, why didn't Douglas get someone to replace him? Why hasn't Saleh benched him? Do you really think they don't care about winning and putting the best players on the field, including and especially the QB? Can you step back from your conviction that Zach sucks and consider that maybe you're the one missing something? And maybe that "something" goes beyond the obvious on field performance and stats. For all of my defense of Zach, if the Jets had a better answer and were winning games, I wouldn't have any problem with that. It's a "win now" league, and if Zach can't deliver that, then fair or not, he should be replaced by someone who can. But the Douglas and the CS have decided he's their best chance right now, regardless of what the fans think. You're entitled to your opinion, but theirs counts more.
Well Douglas and Saleh are perennial losers so they could just be wrong in their assessment I think at this point its pretty clear they made a mistake not bringing in a better backup QB before or after Rodgers got hurt. They were wrong then and they could be wrong now
JD has won SBs with the ravens and the eagles saleh as won a SB with the seahawks and lost one with the 49ers
The only shred of hope I hang on to is: What would that game look like had we not been penalized out of 21 points in the first half? Had Hall's TD stood and we not gotten the penalties that resulted in FG's instead of TD's would the 2nd half had looked any different? Would Zach have continued his momentum into the second half and delivered a blowout? Would he have still shit the bed? Every time I see a penalty the first words out of my mouth are, "Drive Killer." We aren't good enough to overcome 5 yd. penalties, let alone the 10yd. variety. Let's face it, football is a game of momentum. Just as we were building it, some moron would end it. I think we start there, at least for this year.
Couldn’t agree more. From Zach on down this is not an offense that can absorb set backs of that nature. Particularly the many self inflicted taxation take points off the board. We are far from an explosive O that can overcome momentum shifts.
I still can't believe Z Wilson evokes this kind of reaction still. We all know what he is, and as I said on Sunday. My biggest issue is with those two bald idiots making the decisions, and of course Woody, but that goes without saying.
it's so funny that the 2 sides of the argument are basically 1) he sucks but we don't have a better option vs 2) he shouldn't be in the NFL and start boyle
By that logic, I think we found our next coach. https://www.foxnews.com/sports/chie...sing-play-drawn-up-janitor-resulted-touchdown
