Sunday will be Zach Wilson's 31st start. If he has potential its about time he freakin shows it. He's had an abundance of opportunity
i dont think ANYONE is arguing he didnt get an opportunity enough. ( some said same about Geno...whose late blooming career is rare.,.. altrhough seeing RW struggle inclines one to think Metcalf and Lockett are both significantly above avg WRs)
right keep 2 extra blockers in and STILL they allow pressure... the OL is equally as bad as the QB if not worse... cos ZW doesnt fuck up the run game, the OL does.. thus, Joe Douglas F
I've never said that I think they should get rid of Zach. I was just replying to some hypothetical situations laid forth by the previous poster. I wouldn't want to give him a ton of guaranteed money on his 2nd contract. His current contract is what it is, the pitfalls of overdrafting someone in today's NFL. If he's willing to take an extremely team-friendly deal after this current contract is up, I'd absolutely bring Zach back on a 2-3 year deal just to see if he's the outlier. He's proven that he's at least a middle-of-the-road backup already and is still improving, albeit at a slower rate than most of us would want, so I think we could do a lot worse than him as our back up QB. We could probably do better than him as a backup QB but we're going to have to make some really tough decisions over the next 2-3 years before we get out of the cap issues we've created in the last year or so. Maybe he's a pathway top getting a decent backup on the cheap. All this is purely speculative though as there's just still so many unanswered questions we have to account for before his contract is up next year. Does Rodgers play 2 more years now that this one is essentially a wash? Would Zach want to continue to play behind him and learn from him? Would he even take a deal that low if he does somehow flip the script down the stretch this year? Does he want a change of scenery regardless of how the next year and a half shakes out?
jeez. 3rd and 10 from the 28ish and he runs all 3 WRs into the end zone? I can't get mad at the max protect from hackett but having 7 block 4 and still allowing pressure in under 3 seconds is embarrassing. especially when all 3 WRs are running 30 yard routes into max zone coverage and all in the same area of each other. it seems every 3rd down is an all go or all curls at the sticks into zone coverages.
You might be right that he can't run an offense efficiently, but I don't agree. I've given my reasons for believing this numerous times so I'm not going to restate them all here, but let me ask you: given that he did run the BYU offense efficiently, why can't he run the Jets (or any other team's) offense efficiently? Is he really just too slow witted? I've seen him make plays that require a "feel" for the game, so I don't buy that he doesn't possess that either. If the Jets design their game plans and play calling based on his skill set, he'll improve. Will he make mistakes? Of course, so do all the other QBs. But much of the offensive struggles are not due to him, but to the poor game planning, and play calling, and a not very good supporting cast beyond GW and Breece, as well as lack of effort and dumb mistakes by some players. I DO agree they need to draft another QB, but even there, could they do a better job than they historically have with young QBs? Until proven otherwise, no. So, if Zach really the answer after addressing these other issues, I'd prefer they sign or trade for a good to very good vet QB.
On the drive Zach threw the pick I told my son the odds say we score a TD here or Zach throws a pick. I should have kept my mouth shut.
I noticed that as well and thought it was very strange. I watched an all-22 break down and he missed an easy cut early in the 3rd quarter that would have went for a big gain. I wonder if Breece is a bit banged up?
That's a valid point, up to a point. It explains why he would struggle at first more than other QBs who played tougher schedules, but he's shown that he's improved in adapting to the faster play of the NFL - even if he's still adjusting. If you disagree with this take - and I think your previous posts indicate that - then there's nothing I can say. But if you agree that he's made progress in this regard, then there's reason to believe he can get better. And if he can get better, then he should be able to "run an NFL offense efficiently" since he's run one efficiently before. But a key part of running an offense efficiently is having that offense designed for your QB's best traits, and staying away from his weakest ones. Both LaFleur and Hackett haven't done this - although Hackett's done a marginally better job. BYU's offense was designed for Zach, and that was a key difference.
I'm not going to ask you to either. you have every right to think he pull it out. I mean if people want to be optimistic and noting wrong with that. he is only 24 years old with less then 2 years starting experience and everyone can see he has elite physical tools. as far as running BYU, it's the issue with the whole college thing. the NFL "farm" system sucks. colleges know that players time is short lived and need things to be plug and play. competition level is all over the place. there is no parity and there are too many colleges and positions to stack them all. the NFL drafts in roughly about 300-350 every year when you add in comp picks and UDFA. and most of them don't last in the NFL very long . There are about 71,000 players play in college every year. that means only the top .005% of college players make the NFL. Then out of that maybe 20% of those have a career last longer then 3-4 years. The NFL is the top .001% of the top .001% of players. the talent level is insane. the reason I bring that up is goign from college to NFL for a QB is probably one of the hardest jumps in sports ever. the playbooks are complicated, everyone knows more then you. the defenses have people like CJ mosley who knows your plays better then you and knows how to trick you. the margin of error is tiny where in college it's not. It's the mental jump that kills QBs. here memorize a 300 page playbook, memorize what the D is doing this week (it'll change every week) and you have 2 seconds to read the defense, find someone open and delivery a strike to them. good luck. People don't understand how hard it is to play QB in the NFL. it's probably the toughest position in all of sports overall. and to me, it just looks like zach doesn't have the processing speed to be a good QB in the NFL, but my issue is when you are a HC and OC and see that and see the arm talent you have to design a system that works for your QB. hackett is trying to make zach be rodgers and he isn't. MLF did the same. too many OC's have their system and want the players to run it, instead of looking at their players and making the system work for them. The best OC's do that. I mean mid season, the ravens changed their whole offense from statue flacco to mobile lamaar. ried is a master at it. he built an offense for mcnabb despite having shit for WRs and knowing it. he built an offense for alex smith to work in, then hit the jackpot with mahomes. we don't seem to do that
This team and the tenure of HC and GM are screwed if they are relying on Rodgers. Rodgers has now been hurt for two straight seasons he is over 40 years old. What makes anyone think he will stay healthy?
For whatever is worth the comments by the defense about playing complimentary football IMO are not as much an indictment on Zach as the target as it is to the entire Offense and the OC staff. We took two TD off the table, one for absolute sure, the other was a beauty to the 12 yard line, both called back for insanely stupid mistakes and offensive incompetence. Neither on Zach. In fact with our putrid offense, if it wasn’t for that long Zach run we never get there. So while Zach fumble at the last minute was bad, as the sack, we could have put this game away early if the likes of Uzomah, Lazard, the OL and a resemblance of a running game will shows up. Not to mention one of the most asinine play calling of all time. It’s incredible naive to think that all that shit will go away if they just remove Zach. They might have one moment of glory and then revert back to shit like last year. This OL needs major fixing, from the top down. We are one WR deep seems like. Discipline from the HC to OC to the players is non existing. Fix that and we have two more wins today. RS in my opinion is not taking charge of the major issues.
lazard, MC or cook, and Uzo are probably the 3 most likely to have their playing time cut and be replaced
an Achilles injury is a freak injury. so is a broken thumb. it's not like he's had nagging knee/neck/arm issues that compound over time.
To their defense, if Rodgers had stayed healthy this year, I think we're probably at worst 6-3, maybe 7-2 and have a much different outlook and feeling about this season and beyond. But your point about his age/durability is a valid one.
