And we had no clear way of knowing this before we drafted him because he was never proven in college. We took the dude based on a pro day. It was such a stupid reach.
Bullshit. There are plenty of mock drafts by analysts and multiple polls on this site that have Zach over Fields BEFORE his pro day. That's a false narrative that needs to die.
It's frustrating to watch him do this, and this is also why he's started to get receivers hit hard and eventually will get one injured.
A lot of teams are doing more with less... that's the sad part. I'd rather Zach throw an int. or two if he can score some touchdowns. If he shits the bed in Vegas and we lose... then that's pretty much season over.
The Jets never do what smart teams do. They finally have a solid pass rush but 1/5 of the gameday roster is defensive linemen.
And It would have been a sack if the Oline gave him another 2 seconds too. He missed the windows on all the throws when he doesn’t fire at top of the drop. I mean the tape from this game has to be very concerning to the coaching staff and why Saleh had a soft support on Kay’s show.
Zach's college career indicated he couldn't even start in the SEC, moreless the NFL. He didn't have any college success as a QB except against D2 level talent.
Who the hell cares about mock drafts and couch coaches? How about real game time activity? Polls on this site? Yeah - we're all geniuses. The proof is in the pudding - the guy has never consistently demonstrated an ability to read the field in a timely manner. Big shows at Pro Days are as common as big shows in the batting cages and driving range - nobody's rushing those guys either.
I was skim-reading and my brain saw got dropped and shot jumped off the GW Bridge. Actually sounds about right somehow.
The claim was that the Jets picked him strictly over his pro day. It's absolute horseshit. Plenty of fans, analysts and GMs had Zach over Fields BEFORE the pro day. I'm not saying Zach is good, he's still got a LONG way to go, but everyone knew the drop off after Trevor Lawrence was really big. If people saw what they have seen now, Zach would have gone in round 5.
"Absolute horseshit"? New York Jets brass watch BYU QB Zach Wilson pro day - Sports Illustrated New York Jets News, Analysis and More A million schmoes could have had Zach as the greatest of all time; it doesn't mean he was ever any good. Are we wrong to expect more from the guys who actually get paid to make the important decisions? BTW, Lawrence and Fields have absolutely nothing to do with how wrong the "fans, analysts and GM's" you cite were about Wilson.
LMFAO! JUST WOW! Since you can't seem to read the English language or comprehend it, the original claim was that Zach was only drafted by the Jets based on the pro day, and your brilliant argument was, "The Jets were there." IT'S ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT. IT'S A LYING MEDIA NARRATIVE THAT WAS CREATED IN HINDSIGHT MORE THAN A YEAR AFTER ZACH WAS DRAFTED. I never argued that Wilson was good, but he was just as much a coin flip as all the other 1st round QBs not named Trevor Lawrence. This isn't rocket science. You really think the Jets scouting department was like, "Well this guy totally sucked, he has no chance to be good, but he had that one good throw at pro day." College isn't the NFL. I can't even.
QB draft analysis equals ratings. The media has a strong incentive to evaluate and overhype QB’s. GM’s have incentive to draft overrated QB’s because as we can see in the NFL, there’s only about 15 guys that can play the position well. This happens all the time. What doesn’t happen all the time is drafting a kid that you never interviewed in person until pro day, and didn’t had a combine performance due to Covid. 2020 was not a year to draft a QB with so many historical red flags. Certainly not a year to draft one one year wonder who had all his success against really inferior talent in empty stadiums. Zach has lacked confidence on the field since day one. He’s not a leader at all, he walks around with a total lost blank stare. A good detailed interview applying scheme and decision making pressure should have revealed his lack of ability to see the field in real time. And then to completely solidify the insanity of the pick, they named him starter right off the bat. From drafting Zach to playing Zach everything they’ve done as a FO has been egregiously bad.
It was the same story for every player in that draft though, it was a Covid season I guess it wasn’t the time to take a big swing on a position like QB Miami’s draft, same situation, had to rely on pro days mostly, was incredible
BYU also traditionally played 3-4 Pac-12 schools a year and recruited near that level as an independent. They also send a lot of guys on religious missions so they get back to BYU as 24 year olds with 4 years of eligibility. When Covid happened the PAC-12 and most of the power 5 conferences said we’re not playing independents and only going to play in conference games so we know the standard of protocols. BYU had to go find cupcakes and they ended up playing down in competition all year when they played a bunch of teams in the middle to bottom Sun Belt, AAC and CUSA teams that here instead of their usual mountain west and P12 schedule. It was so obvious when he was facing no pressure behind a brick wall and just lofting 50 yard bombs down field against Texas State. He looked mediocre when he played a good team in Coastal Carolina.
He had an amazing senior year, which was his first ever good year as a player (they were considering benching him and made him compete for the position and didn’t name him captain because they didn’t know if he’d win the job). His amazing year came against complete cupcakes with no pressure and no fans in the stands. As one hit wonders with red flags go, he had all of them. He had leadership red flags, he had weak competition red flags and he had football acumen red flags. His “strength” was he far he can throw a ball, but I won’t really give him credit for a strong arm seeing as he immediately crumbles in any kind of light breeze. Remember his post game “guys it’s windy” against NE when asked why he couldn’t move the ball? A strong arm QB doesn’t get affected by wind like that. They also tried touting his as a running threat. Anyone with half a brain just needs to take one look as his diminutive frame and know that using Zach as a running threat would result in him getting killed in the NFL.
