It's 3rd and 8 - they are going to send pressure. Bosa is one of the rushers in the league. It was a stunt up the middle - he needs to check to Breece by his feet and play is over before the sack.
I can't really argue against any of this. I'd like to say that I feel like Zach's played more than 1 good half of football but I can only point to individual throws or drives but never full halves of football. That is the Zach Wilson Experience. A wildly inconsistent QB that makes a handful of good plays every game that are drowned out by the mediocre/bad things he also does in those games.
If this is a play in the first quarter, I would agree with your original assessment without any argument whatsoever. This is more about the facts surrounding when and where the Jets were in this game. As much as anyone who gives a damn about the Jets wanted a touchdown from this drive, the single most important objective at this point was to turn this into a one possession game going into the fourth quarter. A quarterback with any semblance of general knowledge of the sport of football understands this, and throws the ball away if he is under duress for ONE SECOND, neverminded two. @KY Jets Fan I have a ton of respect for you, and the effort you put into these reports you do. I simply can not agree with you excusing Zach Wilson given these circumstances.
Jeremy Ruckert is not some bum they grabbed off the street. He was a significant investment as a 3rd round pick by Joe Douglas. They opted for him over an offensive lineman for example that they desperately need right now. Ruckert should be playing more than Uzomah at this point. Otherwise he's just another draft bust on Douglas' resume
I get it. It's why I said that it definitely could have been a TD because GW is a special player that can do some special things. I don't think it was a guaranteed TD though so we'll just have to agree to disagree on that. Also, it is a bit nit picky, but Turner is in his lap so he can't really step into the throw which probably affected it. Should he have still hit the throw? Absolutely. It was a bad miss by Zach regardless of what pressure he had or sensed, no arguments there. There are a lot of differences when it comes to Herbert and Zach, and you're right, the Chargers made the plays they had to make to get the win. That's what good teams do.
But the only way you get past those early struggles are to play through them. With more game time and snaps, I think those penalties will go away for Ruckert.
Are we talking about the same play? Breece wasn't on the field for the play I'm referencing. It was an empty set with MC lined up wide right.
The Play in Question is at 7:51 of this Video: There is no way that ANY QB with a basic understanding of football can not throw the ball away on this play
I appreciate the sentiment! I don't feel like this is an example of me excusing him, I just don't know of any QB that would react to that specific situation much different than Zach did. I agree with your point though. He's got to get rid of the ball in that game situation.
I knew that WE were talking about the same play. I just got confused with @BrooklynJetsFan's "check to Breece by his feet" comment. Now I'm assuming that they meant that Zach should've brought the RB (who he thought was Breece but was MC) back into the backfield to give him another blocker back there. Which, I can't argue with. It's something a good QB would've done. EDIT: Or maybe they were saying he should've just thrown the ball at MC's feet when he felt pressure?
I just went back and watched it. he was contacted in under 3 seconds. at 2 seconds would be the fastest to get rid of it. nobody was open except a TE who was 7 yards short of a 1st down. there was nowhere to go with the ball this is half a second before he was sacked throwing to the RB at the top is likely a pick 6, the 3 WRs are blanketed and the TE is open but well short of a 1st. maybe throwing to the TE gives them a field goal try but he didn't have time to get through progressions that far
He's got 2 seconds. I wouldn't go as far to say that's plenty of time. Even the quickest average "Time to Throws" in the league are around 2.3-2.5 seconds. Also, who is he dumping the ball off to? MC? I feel like his primary read on this play is GW and he's trying to see if he beats his man. It even looks like he's about to make that throw when Bosa contacts him. He's at least loading up for a throw there. I just don't think we're gonna agree fully here, my friend. Zach's bad and had some bad plays on Monday night, I'm just not so sure this one is as egregiously bad as you do. I do agree with you that he's gotta get rid of the ball in this situation though.

I am not asking for a completed pass here. I am not asking for one yard. I am asking him to throw the ball at someone's feet for an incomplete pass, which he has demonstrated many, many times that he is capable of doing. This allows Zuerlein to attempt a 52 yard field goal, which I admit is NOT a chip shot., but something he has shown the capacity to achieve.
I never asked him to dump the ball off to ANYONE. I asked him to throw an incomplete pass, and allow a 52 Yard Field Goal attempt.
it's 3rd and 8. sure it cost us a FG attempt but he's trying to keep the drive going and I don't think he felt like tomlinson would fail so hard. I mean look at the pic. the pocket is clean, half a second later he's sacked. tomlinson did nothing to even slow down bosa on that play
