All the weather is pointing for a rough winter this year that starts earlier than usual. This really is the first Nor'easter of the season and its not even October yet.
The boat I was supposed to be on also has a Sunday 2 day offshore Tile trip. I have no idea how they plan to get that in. I have a feeling the Capt. won't cancel two offshore trips. They'd lose too much money. Must have broken his heart to cancel my trip. $425 refunded back to yours truly.
It's the way it goes... my friends try to run as many charters their bodies allow them in the summer as they know they're cancelling alot in the fall
As it turns out, Ophelia decided the Voyager wasn't sailing for Tile today either. Both trips were full and I think the 2-day trip was 7bills. Not sure how they're gonna make that up with the fall weather turning early. I got several more trips planned between now and December and i hope I can get a few of them in. After 11/27, my days will belong to me as I'll be officially retired from AT&T.
Another storm inbound for Sat/Sun. Looks like I'm shore bound for another week. Got completely weathered out of my Tuna trip for '23. Will try again next year!!
Can't catch a break up here weather wise. Another rainy weekend and fishing plans cancelled. October up here is when the southern/offshore migration is starting up. By November, its in full swing. I got two trips planned for Nov. First weekend for Block Island/Montauk and the 3rd Saturday offshore for jumbo Sea Bass/Porgy/Blues.
My brother said still some bluefins around, and stripers a full-bore but most are over slot. Tried to force himself thursday& friday when it was flat, but he was sick (sounded like shit on the phone) and only gave it a very half hearted effort, and nothing to show for it.... (got bit off once, most likely a shark)
Just finished off my arsenal for SW Deep Drop fishing. I'll be able to fish any depth up to about 2000ft. Got a Daiwa Tanacom Dendoh MH and Daiwa Seaborg H Daiwa Curve Butt Rods. Daiwa Tanacom 1200 E-Reel to match the Tanacom rod and I already had my Daiwa Seaborg 800MJ to match with my new curve butt rod. Last Deep Drop trip was great however, when we got between 1000-1500ft looking for Golden Tiles, My rig could barely handle the 8lb lead needed to hold bottom so I was benched until the Capt. decided to get shallower so we could load up on Blueline Tiles. I still managed to bag 4 Goldens, and 4 Rosey Reds in the really deep water along with 26 Blue lines in about 600ft. Can't wait for spring as I decided to do a lot more deep drop fishing. Might squeeze in a FL. trip too if the money is right.
Oh yeah.. Decided to knock an item off my bucket list too next year. Just booked a 4 day trip in Sept. 2024 on the American Patriot out of Marcos Is. FL. Will be fishing the GoM at the famed "Pulley Ridge" for anything swimming deep. Figure on the AutoTrain instead of flying or driving both ways. Gets me to Sanford, FL. I'll drive the 4hrs from there to Marcos Is. I'm retiring at the of this month so I'll have time now to fish until I can't do it anymore!! Tight Lines!!!
That's awesome.... someone's been watching Johnny Jigs videos. September is a hard one to commit that fa in advance (hurricane season) but if stars align and there's space, maybe I meet you there
That would be a great trip!! Most of the mid-summer trips are already sold out for 2024. Sept thru Nov they had availability.
Yeah, Makes sense.... not sure if they get red snapper all the way down there (I dont think so) but Gulf Red snapper season will be closed (doubt thats a factor for pulley ridge) But probably due to hurricane factor. My buddy's parents used to have a place in Marathon in the Keys. Mostly a vacation rental (that theyd use occ in the wintertime (from DE)... September was hardly ever booked, so we got to use it and just pay for the cleaning service. It was on a canal, so we'd tow the boat down. A long haul but good times.... unfortunately they had to sell when his dad had a long bought with cancer
Just got my Hotel rooms reserved via Travelocity for next year too. Leaving nothing to chance. All I have left to do now is book the AutoTrain and I'm set.
Another one that's not that far of a drive from Sanford on the middle Gulf is a overnight trip to the "Middle Grounds"...
My brother called last night all giddy when he got home from work.... I called him Saturday morning when I saw the buoys and said "You're season's coming to an end, You better go fishing today!" Well he listened to big bro.... and apparently CRUSHED the stripers. Ran his 17' Sailfish out Rockaway inlet and got a bunch of over-slots, saw a humpback whale that came up rt next to his boat eating bunker, then they got 2 slot size stripers on plugs on the way in.
