That is an absolute bummer. Seems like every single offensive lineman we have drafted over the last three years gets hurt on year one. Every single one. Not one person escapes this curse.
Not following college football but are these players really injury prone or they are getting hurt because they are playing a position we didn't draft them for. Becton has weight issues so forget him but we drafted AVT as Left Guard ended up playing him Right Tackle. We drafted Tippman to be our Center and we are playing his as Right Guard. Does out of position issue cause any injuries? Experts, anyone?
I think it played a role for sure. More so, with Vera-Tucker. He played a lot of tackle at USC but he was put on this earth to play guard. He has a strong base and short arms, to compensate at the tackle position where DEs take wider angles he would need to really focus on his footwork and getting those arms out, which could've lead to his injuries Tippmann might be a little different story because he's odd-shaped and tall even for a center. Idk, it makes you wonder though
In my opinion that is a significant contributor for sure, because they are making adjustments to their body and muscle movements that are new, need to be learned and don’t necessarily come as natural to them. So they overcompensate and overload the joints, tendons, muscles and the like. A bigger issue to me is the usage of astroturf at MetLife.
I'm no expert by any means, but I don't think that's why they got hurt. AVT had played LT, RT, and I think maybe both OG positions in college and AFAIK was never injured and had to miss a game (but I could be mistaken on both issues). I don't recall Tippman being injured in college, either. I don't know how AVT was injured, but according to what I've read, Tippman was just stepping back to pass block, planted his foot, and it happened. That seemingly could have happened just as easily playing C. I think they have just been freak accidents, but any or all of the practice regimen, the Jets' training staff, the turf, and playing out of position could be the cause.
That has been my theory since AVT got injured last season, mainly because I saw the way Dallas had moved their guys around so much a few years ago and they just kept getting injured. But really, teams do it all the time. It's not uncommon because a lot of OL can play multiple positions to some level of competence. But it's also not uncommon for most teams to have runs of injury at OL. Teams will keep doing it until the NFLPA tries to do something about it, but I would expect the NFL to change the rules on 3 point stances before they restrict teams from changing player positions.
Tipp I think is likely a freak thing. He just stepped back and is barely touching the DT, all of the sudden hurt. This could have happened at any position, on turf or grass, etc... Frankly he wasn't even doing that much on the play. AVT, this is the second stiny he is playing RT as a smaller guy with much shorter arms and gets seriously hurt. Played many more games at guard and never missed a snap. Either he is injury prone now all of the sudden or better keep him at Guard going forward.
One podcast I was listening to said they noticed it occurred on the temporary logo on the 50 yard line, when he stepped backwards into it, and they wondered if that could have had something to do with it.
it happened to victor oladipo and he was never close to being the same again. he also tore the tendon again a few years later not a great look https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/...-quadriceps-tendon-is-worse-than-an-acl-tear/
I fell down the stairs and tore my quad. Seven weeks in a cast and months of rehab. Hope he's fine but if true he will be back next season.
I mean how? Usually the turf related injuries happen when your foot get stuck in the turf and body turns under force, where if that were grass/dirt, the foot would be able to move a little and the injury would not have occurred. In this case it just seems like a freak occurrence.
Nick Faria @Nick_Faria1720 Robert Saleh now up: Won’t give an injury update on Joe Tippmann. Will have a better understanding on Wednesday. Says the RG is a “quick healer” and looked good. In Saleh-speak, that means he's out for the rest of the season.
