I have no doubt that they will not trade for Cousins. But I don't think Aaron Rodgers has anything to do with it, it has everything to do with giving up draft capital for a rental while they have a guy that they are trying to develop and feel is making progress. .
I just hate Cousins… I haven’t forgotten his damn videos when he just used us to get the deal he wanted with Minny, even at less money than what we offered him Fuck him He’s the epitome of good stat guy but for whatever reason, never wins when it matters He’s clearly way better than Zach, and I do think we have a good playoff chance with him, and certainly more so than we do with Zach, but I have a hard time getting over my dislike of the guy
Even if Zach weren't the QB and improving, I wouldn't trade for Cousins. First of all he used the Jets to get more money from Minnesota, so eff him. Second, he's a stat compiler. He's not a leader or a winner. Third, it would eat up the rest of the cap space, and we need to be able to carry some to next year. So Cousin gets us into the playoffs. What good is that going to do?? It would most likely be one and done. I doubt that Rodgers will be able to play, and even if he is, I doubt that he would be very effective. Besides ending the streak of going to the playoffs it would be meaningless and would only serve to give us worse draft position for next season. If Zach were stinking up the place, I might keep playing him or play one of Boyle of Siemian to get better draft position like Jacksonville did the year they got to draft Lawrence. If the Jets wound up in the top 5 and there wasn't a clear OT stud worthy of being drafted that high, they could possibly trade down a little, get a 2nd round pick and a 4th or a 3rd, still get a top OT and be able to address OG, S, DT, LB or whatever positions they wanted to address or go for additional players to upgrade the team.
I don't blame any player for using offers to leverage a contract and let's face it, getting a fully guaranteed contract was an amazing and unprecedented move to make. But moving on to what good a playoff appearance with Kirk would do? 1. You give your players and experience on what success is. You have them playing in high pressure situations and meaningful football into the final weeks of the season and you not only give them knowledge of what playoff football is about but...... 2. You get the organisational knowledge of how to prepare for playoff football as that's not something we have a great CV of recently. 3. You can properly evaluate your offense as the players and the coaches are no longer running a pared down, basic set of plays but can actually use the full playbook and all the run and pass concepts that a proper scheme uses. 4. Your defense isn't burning itself out by having to bail out the team every play of every game and can maybe learn how to play when you have an early or multiple score lead. 5. Your front office shows the world and Johnson that the concept of this team being a QB away from an actual SB is not a laughing matter and that THIS GM and coaching staff are the ones who can take you there. 6. Once your in the playoffs then it's any given Sunday and maybe you find yourself playing against a third string QB or a hobbled Mahomes missing key pieces or even a Josh Allen who's happy to give you a 3 turnover advantage. Frankly the only reason not to make the move is if you think JD is suddenly going break with history and find us a starter in the 3rd or 4th or if you truly think we are bad enough to beat the Panthers, Bears, Giants, Pats, Cards or Bronco's to a true difference maker. Having said all that - I don't think it will happen due to Cousins 'No Trade Clause' and it' be uncharacteristically bold for JD to make this happen before or during the bye.
Cousins is consistently a top 10 QB in this league. He’s currently 2nd in the league in passing yds, and 7th in passer rating. Zach is 33rd in rating, dead last. When people said Cousins couldn’t win games, he put up winning seasons. Couldn’t win Primetime games, then did. Couldn’t make playoffs, then couldn’t win playoff games, but he did both. Winning is not a QB stat, thats my biggest pet peeve in football, but that argument is now moot with him anyway. He’s also a great teammate and reliably healthy. Cousins on this team, and we would be a contender rather than what’s destined to be a frustrating disaster. I don’t think JD will do anything but sit on his hands some more and watch the ship sink week by week. But if it was only a mid round pick for the rental, I’d be all for it. We got valuable draft capital back considering the Rodgers injury and JD got us into a desperate position by not rostering a real backup. Wouldn’t do a 2nd, as we don’t have one, and that’s too rich for a rental. 3rd/4th round range seems like the line, provided Minn even wants to trade him to begin with. It would have to be very soon also to have any chance of getting up to speed. Prob not happening, but would bring life back to this dismal season, and break the playoff drought while helping other players develop.
I wish you were correct that no one roots for injury but every NFL team should plan for injury. People here constantly talk about it as if it's something rare but last season only ten quarterbacks started all seventeen regular season games. So, yes, the odds are that Zach Wilson is going to miss starting due to getting hurt. If that happens, the price for Cousins will leap while Carson Wentz is couchbound, and free as a bird.
Do you honestly think Carson Wentz is a better quarterback than Kirk Cousins? Cousins has flaws, he is certainly not big time clutch, but he's got a job. He will continue to have a job. Wentz is staring at his phone waiting for it to ring. And again, this is just a silly exercise because if the Jets are serious about making any kind of playoff run if Wilson does get hurt, they go get Cousins. If not, it's Trevor Siemian. There's no in between.
They are not getting either of these guys. If you think for one second a QB like Wentz could ever play for a coach like Saleh They are not getting either of these guys. If you think for one second a QB like Wentz could ever play for a coach like Saleh you have not watched this team the last couple of years.
I agree with you fully. At this point, it's Wilson or nothing. If he gets hurt, they go with Siemian and sign another scrub. If everybody gets hurt, then maybe they explore these options and by then it doesn't matter anymore anyway.
This is where I'm at. Offer up a 4th, or lower, and see what sticks. Minny is on the hook for his salary this year anyway so what could it hurt? The REST of the team is too good not to at least turn the stone over to take a look. Anything less is the front office telling the team they have no interest in making the unit better, as a whole. Sends a bad message.
I don’t think Wentz is better than Cousins, I just think the result is the same with either at the helm. One would cost picks and a lot of money. The other wouldn’t. I’m not advocating for either, honestly. But while Cousins is a better QB, our ceiling with him is maybe a playoff birth with an early exit. That ceiling is just about the same with Wentz.
I don't think either Cousins or Wentz is the answer. I think we're best off riding out the season with Wilson/Boyle/Siemian and hoping for the best. If we crash and burn then we should use our first 3 picks on OL (like we should have done this year) and hope that Rodgers comes back at 100% next year so we can make a real run. It always starts up front, and we haven't paid enough attention to our OL since we drafted Mangold and D'brick.
Carson Wentz? The former #2 overall pick who’s been called selfish by his teammates and is known to be a locker room cancer? That Carson Wentz? The one who’s been released/traded from every team he’s been on? That one? The one who got the last coach who vouched for him, fired? That guy has the same ceiling for us as a QB who’s currently, this season: #2 in yards, #1 in TDs, #5 QBR. Those 2 QBs have the same upside from your perspective? Am I understanding this correctly?
Cousins will be great for guys like Garrett Wilson because they’ll rack up gaudy stats, but the guy loses prime time games, the guy loses playoff games. We get in, we get bounced. Wentz is better than Zach, and better than Zach might well also get us to the playoffs and get bounced in the first round as well. His stats won’t be nearly as padded as Cousins, he’s not as good as Cousins. But barely avg QB play might get this team into the playoffs. I’m not by any means advocating for either. I just don’t want to be giving picks away for a guy like Cousins
No, I don't think Carson Wentz is a better quarterback than Cousins - where did you get that from? You don't think Siemian is better than Wentz, do you?
What a ridiculous statement - I've been watching this team for sixty years. Let's hear your explanation why Wentz could not play for Saleh.
