I'll start by saying that I don't think for one second a trade will actually happen, but it provides an interesting case study. The rumors that the Vikings may look to trade Kirk Cousins have heated up after the Justin Jefferson injury. Wide receiver with a hamstring, minimum 4 weeks, they may as well pack it in. Do they trade him? I'm thinking not. And I don't think for a second the Jets would do it, they've made their position pretty clear and I don't think after seeing Wilson show a little bit of progress they would just give up on him.

But for the hell is it, a strong case can be made that the Jets may be one of the only real suitors for a rental on the last year of his contract. If you had your druthers, would you want to trade for him? I don't think there's any question he gives us a much better chance to make a playoff run. Probably wouldn't cost all that much, but no chance he gives us Super Bowl hopes. He would be gone at the end of the year, A-Rod steps back in, and the Jets are in the same position they would have been if he didn't get hurt as regards Wilson.

So, If everything fell in that matter, low compensation, gone at the end of the year, good chance at hanging in there the whole season, would you want them to do it?

I say no to him for below reasons.

    1) Rodgers is coming back next year based on all indications. If so, paying Kirk would mean not fortifying rest of the team.

    2) I think Kirk is also on his way to decline. He is 35 and will be 36 next year. No thanks to a 36 year old Kirk.

    3) We are not winning Superbowl this year anyway. So let's see what Zach has to offer rest of the season.

He would be gone at the end of this year either way, he's in the last year of his contract. So it would have no effect on Rodgers. And I agree about the last part, but I guess I should have been more clear that my question is based on whether you feel it's worth it to make a sure - thing playoff run this year knowing that out ceiling was one win, and more then lonely one and done. I don't think anyone can argue that he's an improvement over Wilson, and if we feel we can be in a playoff race with wills in, there's no reason to think it becomes much more solid with someone better.

Okay. if he is a one year rental then I am OK with it. I think our defense is above average and Kirk would make our offense average to above average. We would have a shot.

    I wouldn't give more than a 4th and I'm not sure that'll do it.

I think I'd be tempted if you could do a one year rental. The Jets have a really good team aside from their QB woes, Cousins would make a playoff appearance much more likely, and once you get into the playoffs anything can happen.

There has already been one game this season (Patriots) where beyond any shadow of a doubt having Kirk Cousins would have been the difference between winning and losing and there will probably be a couple more along the way. It could absolutely be a difference maker.

Kirk’s a good NFL QB and takes an absolute pounding from defenders. Never understood why he always seems to catch so much shit. He’s not that dissimilar from Philip Rivers in that they produce during the regular season and can’t win the big game.

It’d be fun for sure. I wouldn’t want to give away a lot of capital for a wild card loss rental though.

Agreed. I might consider a 3rd under the premise that we'd likely be picking in the 20s, but nothing more than that.

One could argue that he might've won the Chiefs game for us as well. Zach was good for two quarters, but who knows what a little extra could have done in the 1st and 4th.

Agree completely. Giving away one mid-rounder is worth the potential full season of meaningful games and the growth it could foster in the young players. But not worth mortgaging more than 1 pick.

Not worth it. No. Whatever they give up could be used for something else. At best, he gets them to the playoffs. But more likely, by the time the Jets would look to make the trade they'll be out of it anyway. Finally, after how he used the Jets to get his big payday with Vikings, fuck him.

I agree with the timing aspect. Unless you're trading like this week or next. If you're gonna wait until the deadline then he needs sometime to learn the offense... Can't imagine it's worth it at that point and i'd take ANYTHING over a ZW led offense

I agree for the most part, just weighing the cost vs the opportunity to play meaningful games all season and get the young kids some experience in that. Timing wise, the deal would need to happen within the next couple of weeks.

And i don't think there's any way the Jets pull the trigger within that timeframe anyway so this is all just fun conjecture.

If the trade is reasonable, do it.

We need insurance in case Zach Wilson goes down.

As much as I don't like Cousins, if we traded for him it would be to start.

Posted this in another thread —

So basically Minny will get a compensatory pick for cousins no matter what when/if he leaves. That’s probably a 2025 3rd end of the round depending how much money they spend in the 2024 offseason on FAs and how much he signs for. Which will obviously be a ton of money so it will be a 3rd pick for sure at the end of of 2025 pending spending/FA signs.

I was thinking what the Jets could offer them. Surely a 2024 3 would be more enticing and then they can spend money in FA. I cant imagine anyone giving a 2nd considering he can still walk. Vikings also get hit with void year cap hits I think. Same time they wouldn't take lower than 3rd b/c thats what they would get compensatory in 2025.

As for cousins waiving his NTC? I have no idea. He knows he wouldn’t be here next year so it would be a 12 week mini vacation to showcase what he can do. No better place to boost your value by taking the Jets to the playoffs and maybe beating buffalo, jax, or Miami on the road in round 1.

Is it a given that Minny wants to move on from Cousins?

suppose their plan is to just resign him in the offseason

Cousins is a good, mature dude. Some of that is needed here

I doubt the Jets make a trade for Cousins if Rodgers is coming back next year. It would be purely as a rental for this season only. I think the Jets will go Wilson being a game manager type of QB and hope G. Wilson and Breece carry the offense while the defense continues to lead the way for Jets wins.

For shits and giggles, offer a 4th and see if Minny bites.
