I get what you are saying but in the end it's all names. Nothing really proven. we also have a salary cap to worry about and with the rodgers trade things were difficult since it dragged on. that hurt us in free agency alot. fant had 1 good year for us but wasn't good by the time he left. he signed with the texans for 3 mil and is their starting RT but didn't have many offers. we let him walk for a reason. there was no OTs out there really. CMG signed a 1 year 2 mil deal so tippman is slated to take over next year. CMG has been declining as well. when we signed him he was a borderline top 10 OC. now he's more like in the 15-20 range. trading down in the 4th doesn't matter you can just magically trade up. too many people here play too much madden and don't realize that every team has their own agenda. trading isn't as easy as wanting it. Broderick jones couldn't beat out 2 journemen OTs for pitt. their o-line is awful as well right down there with ours and he hasn't cracked the lineup yet so not sure how he'd be helping us anyway right now. Lineman don't fall off trees and most teams fans think their lines suck. we are just at a point where the d-line talent in the NFL is greater then the o-line talent. only like 5 teams have good offensive lines. the rest are middling to trash.
it was awful last year do to injuries. the line was actually playing really well at the start of the season. but we lost every starter on the line and were signing people off the streets to start. we were down to OTs 5 and 6 by the end of the year. When we had brown, tomlinson, CMG, AVT, and fant the line overall was solid.
We should consider hiring the Bears assistant GM? That franchise is a dumpster fire littered with bad draft picks. The Colts too?
dunno I didn’t make these rankings all I was implying was jds time here is over and we’ll Be interviewing new candidates very soon, jd has wore out his welcome time for a change
Trading in the 4th round is not that hard and it does not cost that much. Patriots managed to trade up with us to get a kicker. We managed to trade down. If you like someone in the 4th round, there is a way to get it, it's not like trading up in the 1st or even 2nd. But to do that you need to really want someone, and it's clear JD didn't really want Broderick or Dawand. But one thing you said is pretty amazing. Two years ago Fant actually played pretty well for us at LT. We let Morgan Moses go because of it as there was no starting spot for him with Fant as LT and Becton as RT. Then Fant got hurt and palyed like shit when he wasn't. We then keep 38 year old Brown, who also played like shit and was hurt, and let 31 year old Fant go, replacing him with Turner. Now healthy Moses and Fant are playing very well for their teams, while healthy Brown and Turner suck. You cannot make this shit up: We went though 4 FAs tackles, and ended up with two that suck now here, while the other two are good elsewhere.
Letting moses go was probably a mistake. we should have kept him over fant TBH. fant isn't playing well in houston either and he's playing RT. we'd be better off with becton at LT and moses at RT and brown as a backup. every GM makes mistakes in hindsight. and yes it's clear JD didn't care of the top OTs in this class. nothing wrong with that. I have no idea what dawand is currently doing but I have a steelers fan friend so i'm up on their stuff and broderick hasn't been able to crack the lineup despite them having shit at OT and having a line as bad as ours and a QB as bad as ours. so I can't see how taking broderick over WMD would have made sense so far even if he was there. seems like JD may have been right about that.
It's not necessarily by merit that Broderick is sitting. I mean it's not like CMG has been good, he is literally rated the worst Center in NFL, yet Tipp is yet to see the field in spite of having solid offseason. Sometimes when it comes to young rookie OLinemen, coaches want to sit them a bit. Sooner or later though both of these guys will come in. I really hope Broderick sucks ass when he does. It would be a pretty tough pill to swallow if he is good, we could have easily had him if JD really wanted to, and our tackles are as they are.
I’m saying “No. ‘Bare minimum’ as in he’s just bringing back guys who couldn’t get the job done previously”. In other words, instead of putting in some work to find someone who might be able to play well, he’s just resigning players who have been here previously and played poorly
Or they don't know the playbook or they got outplayed by a low end starter. tomlin isn't the type to stick with vets who aren't performing. he has no issues giving jobs to rookies so it's either he doesn't know the playbook (rare for a lineman) or he's being out performed by a low end starter
it's week 2. There are no good starting lineman available. you think there is a magic pool of players right now better then those currently starting? thats an awfully ignorant comment.
There are no easy answers I agree. But La'el Collins is out there. There are also some guys like Connor Galvin who had a really good preseason. These guys will require an active roster spot and more than minimum pay. Agreed picking are slim, but they may be better than Cedric Ogbuehi, who was a practice squad addition. Right now JD is basically staying pat. Remans to be seen if he is right. So far when it comes to Oline he was a lot more wrong than right. Btw you said Fant sucks this season, but looks like he is starting at RT and has very high ratings after two games. Another miss by JD. Picked the wrong injured veteran to stick with. It's just strange that when it comes to Oline, somehow he finds a way to miss.
I wouldn't say that McGovern was the least of our problems last year. He had the best year of his career, but still wasn't good by any stretch of the imagination. He gave up a ton of pressures and QB hits, and quite a few sacks.
