Enough is enough! What team has been abused by poor officiating - even in their "home" stadium - than the Jets? Is it because the league has it in for Woody? Or does it go back farther than that, even to the embarrassment of the Jets proving the "invincible" NFL champion Colts were beatable? IDK. But I do know that they Jets seem to get screwed by the zebras more than any other team. Sunday was another glaring example. https://nypost.com/2023/09/20/nfl-concedes-refs-got-roughing-the-passer-call-against-jets-wrong/ Ideally, what should happen when the league admits that a ref made a game altering bad call, is they should replay the game, either from the time of the bad call or the whole game. It's the right thing to do. But failing that, they ought to invalidate the result, and award a tie. Simply saying "Sorry guys" is pitifully wrong.
At least they admitted it. By any objective measure that was just a bad and improper call (with the benefit of replay)
This one was pretty, especially at the point in the game when it happened. It wasn't as bad as a couple from last year (the Tom Brady one was criminal), but still bad. It also illustrates how a few plays can turn a competitive game into a blowout. The non pick 6 This RTP call Giving up 3rd n 14 on the Cowboys first drive of the 2nd half The Hall fumble - which was really the nail in the coffin
each penalty should go upstairs for confirmation. You should not have to challenge, especially pivotal calls. This should take away any bias in officiating.
Conversely the Jets haven't been the beneficiary of a roughing the passer call since December 2021. Penalties it seems are based on your record. Since the Jets have been hot garbage the refs look the other way when Zach gets slammed. But it's a yellow flag fiesta if one of our defenders so much as sneezes near the opposing QB.
A replay will only give Dallas more opportunity to injure our players on offense. We’d probably lose 50-10. It is what it is
The NFL also fined Chazz Surratt for his trip on the punt return TD Week 1. So considering we had no chance against the Cowboys anyway, the refs have been a net positive for us this season.
I think replays for penalties like that only take away from the overall experience of the game. The disappointment and flaws of some of these heat of the moment plays Is what helps keep the passion for the game healthy. As fans. I think that our team gets fucked way more than most In this department, so that should probably change at some point, but I think that using replay for everything In the game will only hurt the quality of the experience. We got fucked. It sucks. Time to move on though, one bad call doesn't define an entire season.
That hit Milano put on Zach could have been really bad. Shoulder right to Zach's head. I was impressed that Zach shook it off and continued to play.
I agree that there is a definite anti-Jets bias in the referees. I doubt that it's instituted by the NFL or league office, however. I think it's just that the Jets have been bad for so long that officials just don't have much respect for the Jets, and when they make a good play, they probably think that the Jets must have "cheated" somehow by committing holding or RTP, or Pass Interference. I don't agree that the teams should replay the game or the game be called a tie. IMO that's really impractical and a bit excessive for one bad call. Yes a bad call can be the difference between winning and losing, but it's not that often that one bad call is the difference. It can shift the momentum of course and make it harder, but there are usually enough other plays or time in which a team could still win. The crux of the problem is that the NFL referees are not full time, and there probably aren't enough of them. The referees all hold other jobs. One way in which former collegiate and NFL players who aren't good enough to play in the NFL could stay connected would be for them to be hired as referees. The NFL should hire referees full time, and they should be rigorously trained and tested all year long watching hundreds (if not thousands) of hours of All-22 game film reviewing their games and the games of other referees both present and past and evaluating those games under today's rules. That would better train referees and help to prevent some of the blown/missed calls. In addition any controversial call should immediately be reviewed. There should be no such thing as an unreviewable call, teams should have a higher limit of how many calls they can challenge (maybe 10), and they shouldn't lose a timeout if they challenge a play and are wrong, unless that becomes a problem with some coaches continually challenging calls. It would slow the game down, but would help ensure that teams aren't jobbed by blown/missed calls. It would also give players more rest, keeping them fresher and possibly would help prevent penalties and injuries. It would put referees on notice that they will be held accountable for blown calls and there will be negative consequences for them. Any blown or missed calls should result in that referee being fined just as players are fined by the league even if the referees don't call a penalty on them, and that referee should have to apologize to the team. If a referee commits 3 egregiously bad calls or misses 3 blatant penalties or some combination thereof, he should be benched and made to spend another 50 hours or more reviewing game film and assessing the refereeing in those game and be graded on that assessment. He should have to earn a certain score in order to be reinstated. If a referee commits a second 3 egregiously bad or missed calls in a season, he should be fired. Another idea is that perhap there are not enough cameras filming the games. More cameras would give more and better angles so that officials could better see plays, and there would be less guesswork/uncertainty when reviewing calls. The cameras could be tied to a computer with AI once it is better developed, and the AI ought to be able to signal penalties that the referees miss and possibly even override the officials. Technology should also be utilized to determine when the ball crosses the plane of the end zone or the line for 1st downs.
Did you already forget the Pats game when that bogus RTP call completely changed the game and subsequently sent the team and Zach into a tailspin? They happen more than just rarely, especially to the Jets. And yes, I think making ALL penalties subject to challenge and review is a good idea, but there are still some times when a bad call is missed. Or what if a coach has already max'd his challenges and can't challenge a bad call? Making refs FT is also a good idea, but the reality is that the NFL isn't going to do anything unless they're shamed into it. Of course that means they'll likely not agree to replaying a game or making it a tie, but if that were a remedy, they'd be far more motivated to make sure they did whatever it takes to improve the officiating. That call changed the entire game. It was 10 - 7. That call allowed them to go to 18 - 8. At worst it would've been 13 - 7, and then 13 - 10. Whole different game. Saying "Sorry guys" in no way is sufficient.
I think replay should be available…I get it slows the game down, but if you limit the amount of replay calls like we already do, I don’t think it’s a terrible idea…some of these calls are just so fucking awful…that one PI call/non call in that Saints Rams playoff game was huge. Just like the bullshit roughing the passer call against us with the Pats was really game changing. I know they tried it with the PI a couple of years ago, and they said it didn’t change often enough, but I call bullshit on that. I understand not wanting to slow the game down, so maybe you limit it to certain penalties that are potentially game changing, like PI, RTP, etc. And if you limit challenges, coaches won’t be so keen to use them haphazardly
IMO it's better to slow the game down and get it right. NFL teams spend a ton of money and a ton of money is at stake in games. A season can hang in the balance on one game. It would be one thing if the refs were full time and well trained and the NFL did everything they could to prevent mistakes, but when they make little or no effort to ensure that the refs are topnotch and qualified, then they deserve all the criticism they get. PI, like holding happens on almost every play. I call BS on it too! I agree that there needs to be some limit in challenges, but it shouldn't be less than 5. I've seen a number of games where the Jets got jobbed more than 5 times.
They say a penalty could be called on every play, so in the booth reviews would bring the game to a crawl. The answer is that coaches should be able to use their allotted challenges for penalties, either to challenge a non call or to challenge a missed call. let’s remember we got the benefit of a non call on the punt return in the Buffalo game. so, truthfully, we are ahead this season. If the Buffalo penalty is called, maybe we lose. Against Dallas, come on man, they were kicking our butts and one call was not going to turn that catastrophe around.
