I really like that throw against the Giants that Hardman couldn't hold onto. It was an excellent play fake and the ball placement was perfect. Talk about a tight window.
Yup…points one and two can be directly attributed to the typical below par QB play we’ve had. We’ve had poor QB play most of those years, even when the game plan with Rex was to make sure Sanchez didn’t give away the game and let the defense win it, our QB play was not in the top half of the league. Hence the slow starts. We were playing scared and not to lose on O. The turnover battle also really led by too many picks. Both of those conditions should be vastly improved with a QB the caliber or Rodgers. On the defense creating turnovers, yup agreed…our defense can not be considered elite until we start creating more turnovers…it’s a big part of being a truly shutdown D. To me, the biggest help to creating more turnovers is a ferocious pass rush. And we are building that. So there is reason to hope that these three conditions should be improving this year. Again, potential and hope just mean we haven’t done it yet, so we’ll see how it goes, but we should expect to see improvement across the board on these things
I'm going to disagree. We've had top rated defenses before and couldn't win the division. What were we ranked last year? Top 5, right. We won 7 games. Why was that? Our offense sucked. Rodgers was brought in to get us over the hump. This season will hinge on the offense. We play in an offensive minded league. The Jets haven't had a top offense in ages.
Yeah, the days of winning with defense are long gone…you can name 2 teams that kind of did that since 2000, right? The Ravens beat the Giants and the Bucs beating the Raiders. Outside of that, you go back to the 1985 Bears to find teams that won championships due to a top D if coupled with a below par O. These days, the rules are just too favorable to the offense. You just physically can’t play defense well enough to win the whole thing for the most part. Can it happen again? Maybe. But it’s a losing gamble most of the time. You need to score points, and fielding an offense that averages like 15 points per game is going to be a losing proposition. Which is why we brought in Rodgers. Our D was good enough to win with last year. Our offense didn’t hold up it’s end of the bargain. But like has already been said, even last year’s Rodgers is light years better than what we’ve had at QB…shit, when is the last time we had a QB throw for 20 TD’s? Darnold? Fitzpatrick? It’s been a while. And Rodgers will likely be better than last year without the thumb injury and with a better receiving corps
There are going to be Jets fans that will never like Rodgers and hope we can win despite of him. Honestly, I think that's nuts. Back in the day, there were two baseball teams I hated: the Red Sox and the Mets. When the Yankees signed Gooden, Strawberry and Boggs, I put all that hate behind me and rooted for them with all my heart because I loved the team. Now when you compare the impact those guys had to the Yankees to what Rodgers could have on the Jets, it's not even close to the same. Rodgers is far more valuable. I get that Rodgers was considered a diva and that his stance on the medical procedure that won't be named was a huge turnoff for a lot of people. But this guy is going to determine whether we achieve the ultimate goal or not. Don't give me this shit it will be the defense. This isn't the 2002 Buccaneers.
With the rule changes favoring the offense and Refs overprotective of the marquee QB, you're gonna need to score often to win especially in the post season. Bick is right, the day of the dominant defense being the be all/end all are over and probably will never return.
Defenses still wins championships, take a look at the pass rush from the last zillion champions. I think the Rams were an exception as they were mid-level in sacks but even they had two future HOFers rushing the QB in Von Miller and Aaron Donald last year Eagles v. Chiefs, no1 vs no2 in sacks
Yes…getting to the QB is even more important now than ever, and is why I will never complain about drafting lots of pass rushers and I had no problem drafting McDonald this year. However, I do think the point still stands…having a top defense with a mediocre offense won’t get you the Super Bowl, but the contrary is more apt to succeed…
Orlovsky -- “NYJ defense gave up 18 ppg in 2022. AR is 80-10 in his career when his defense gave up 18 points or less.” If the Jets average 24 a game they are going to win 13 or 14 games with the defense they on the other side of the ball. We aren't asking Rodgers to even make this offense top 5-- just be around the top 1/3 (23 ppg off of last year). They would have won 6 more games last year if they just hit that number. He doesn't need to be 2020 or 2021 MVP to achieve that.
This is from the Jets practice. You don't think the Jets are fired up for the Bills. Look at what they put on the tackling dummies.
The last super bowl had 73 points scored and 757 yards of offense. 46 first downs. It's all about the defense
it is not about one game, only someone who doesn't know football and speaking out their ass points to one game. The Eagles had/have a dominant pass rush. Andy Reid choked 99 times, he wins the super bowl though on the 100th. Why? Cause he finally has a defense. They dont even get to that one game without the defense shutting down Joe Burrow the week before Speaking of that, I am hoping the Chiefs crack this year. Losing their best defender in Chris Jones is a great start to that crack. -- the Eagles got Haason Reddick with the exact same contract we got Carl Lawson with by the way, (3y/45M) talk about a steal and which GM can evaluate and project talent better....16 sacks last year, great run defender too, Reddick was single best player on the field most weeks. Joe Douglas had a clear view of his dominance too when Reddick embarrassed Becton down in Carolina, still who'd we sign last offseason? oh yeah Laken Tomlinson at ($40+ M) instead... good call
The outcome of this game, whatever that is, is going to be super annoying to deal with from the media. They will take this one game and slam down conclusions for the entire rest of the season. If the jets lose, they “haven’t done enough yet to unseat the division champs” and if the bills lose “they’ve lost their grip on the division” all fucking year long no matter what happens after that one week. Happy narratives!
