Marcelino McCrary-Ball’s signing could be huge for the 49ers By Wayne P. Brown Feb 13, 2023 at 3:55 PM The San Francisco 49ers signed linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball to a one-year deal today. McCrary-Ball initially signed as an undrafted rookie free agent on August 30, 2022. He was waived and then signed to the 49ers practice squad the day after being waived, where he spent his rookie season. With linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair headed to free agency, McCrary-Ball will run into organized team activities (OTAs) with the opportunity to replace Al-Shaair's Sam (Strong side) position. McCrary-Ball earned his first career interception (even though it doesn't count in his career statistics) in the preseason matchup against the Green Bay Packers. He finished the game with two total tackles. In his second preseason game, a matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, McCrary-Ball finished the game with one tackle. Though his numbers weren't too impressive, he looked good on the football field. There are three reasons why McCrary-Ball could pay enormous dividends for the 49ers. Speed In both of McCrary-Ball's preseason games, he looked fast. Sometimes too fast to where he would miss tackles. He would be the third starting linebacker in the 49ers' base 4-3 defense. On his interception, McCrary-Ball returned the ball for 57 yards. The 49ers could have a young Kwon Alexander brewing in their upcoming camp. Ball Hawk McCrary-Ball was playing zone on his interception in the Packers preseason game. Deommodore Lenoir was in man coverage and hit the defender as Jordan Love threw the ball. Not only did McCrary-Ball track the ball in the air, but he also made the catch and return. The 49ers will be gaining another linebacker that can cover. Bargain If McCrary-Ball develops, the 49ers will have saved money to bolster up the 2023 roster. The team will have some cash to splash around during free agency. Not spending money on a base-down linebacker could be huge. In Conclusion Expect McCrary-Ball to show up to OTAs ready to compete. If he continues to make strides and trend upward, the 49ers will have an answer to their elite linebacking core.
Any list of potential wide receivers, offensive line men, and safeties that have been cut so far with potential to help this year. Is Jalen Reagor that bad of a wide-out?
It's hard to say but If I had to put money on It, I'd guess, once he cashed In. He cashed It In. Pure speculation on my part, but we've obviously seen It happen many times. Mo Wilk was a good example of that.
Went mostly as expected. Brownlee got the one offensive spot referenced. Ashtyn Davis and Surrat got the 2 defensive spots. The surprise was Irv Charles, occupying the slot for Echols suspension. Will be interesting to see if they keep Charles or Surrat once Echols returns. Both play a lot of specials. Im glad Dean and Kuntz made the PS, they worth developing.
On a side note, with the increase to 17 games and the amount of NFL injuries, isn’t it time to go to at least a 56 man roster ?
Possible Cook and/or Carter might not be on the 2024 roster. Valladay sounds like long term prospect.
I like Colon too, he actually played decent I thought in preseason. Maybe I would have kept him over Charles. But not over Turner. Yes we can move AVT, but that's not ideal. We lose a lot at guard and AVT did get hurt on the bend last year playing tackle with his short arms. Billy may have a shot to hold the fort at tackle a little bit in case of injury without disrupting the rest of the line. He actually was all right in preseason and I would be scared to death if he has to play, but .. he raised his stock a bit in preseason. Max on the other hand is a complete disaster. Totally dominated in preseason by complete scrubs. It seems like he actually regressed from last year, and he sucked last year too. However, JD doesn't want to waive Max, because he drafted him, he is still young, and all hope may not be gone. So, if Max stays, wasting a roster spot, and Billy is the only true back-up tackle not guaranteed to be absolutely terrible, he is the choice over Colon. At least there is Tipp and Schweitzer on the interior. Though I agree with you: Colon was decent, and I hope we don't live to regret dumping him.
Not really needed with the rule that NC pointed out a page or two back that two players per game can be moved to the game active category without going through the waiver process the day of the game.
I didn't realize Irv Charles was such a special teams ace. I don't think he's going anywhere even once Echols returns. My best guess is Bryce Hall will be cut then. In terms of 7 WRs, not that Charles offers nothing as a receiver, but I think he's about as much of a WR as Justin Hardee is a CB.
I've sort of kept an eye on Charles since he signed with the Jets last year because I like tall receivers which can be an advantage. Charles is 6'4". It's hard to evaluate a player like him who spent the year on the practice squad, however, last preseason and this preseason, while he wasn't targeted much, I think he caught every catchable ball thrown to him which in total was about 4 or 5. Basically says he has good height and hands. I'm glad he made the cut, for now.
it's possible for sure. the only thing thats off on that is after he cashed it in was when he had his best season then it went downhill form there when he had another opportunity to make more
Every one of these moves that goes completely under the radar shows how good JD is at executing every aspect of his job. The way he manipulated the moves to essentially save almost everyone we really wanted, may be short of Colon was brilliant. Carter is a bit of a mystery at this point, but I have to believe the CS and AR to a lesser extent had a strong input into why him over Bam.
The only other player the Jets lost that they probably wanted to keep was Claudin Cherelus, and the Panthers got a good look at him in the joint practice and game and they nabbed him. They may also have wanted to keep EJ Jenkins, but he signed with another team's PS. I can't blame him as he had no chance to make the roster with Conklin, Uzomah, Ruckert and Kuntz all ahead of him. I credit JD's maneuvering and figuring whom teams would likely poach and whom they wouldn't, but I think also Jets fans overvalued some of our young players.
Evidently, that's a development this offseason, because I believe that he was on the PS all of last season, so he wouldn't have been able to play STs last season. Charles may not go anywhere when Echols comes back, but I'll be will when Warren, Yeboah, and JBC come back after week 4. Unless another player gets injured in the interim, 7 WRs is a luxury, and there won't be many places where they can get those roster spots. It could be Brownlee if he hasn't played by then, but he probably wouldn't make it through waivers. I think Charles would.
