I think we need to accept the fact Zach is now a backup. If your expectation is that he should have played like a well developed #2 overall pick should in the 3d year, yeah he fell short. If he didn't, we wouldn't need AR. His role this year is to be a back-up - just like the guys he played with or against. And I thought for a back-up he was solid. He made some mistakes, but he also made some great throws and really drops hurt him big time too. That long pass to Hardman, I still do not understand why it was not caught. I mean it was a 50 yard lay-up right in his chest. This btw explains why Hardman wasn't that great even when playing with Mahomes. He is a better version of Berrios, a good WR #4, but no more. Anyway, to me Zach has improved a lot based on entire preseason body of work. Ball security is much better. He still made several huge plays not many other people can make. He hit lay-ups. And he made some mistakes. Is he a #2 pick level player now? Hell no. But can he step up hopefully for a very limited time whenever Rodgers can't and not shit all over himself like he did towards the end of last year and be a solid back-up? I think so.
So you assume that the pass to Gibson was on Gibson--have we never seen him miss the same pass several times in his career already? Yet you attribute this miss to Gibson. And yeah, I disagree with you and others who think he's a decent qb. Hopefully I'm wrong--but I'm going by data--you are not but rather you are allowing yourself interpretation based upon your bias towards him. When have we established a case for sure that his prior slant misses were due to a receiver not sitting down? Never I think.
He should be able to move the all up and down the field with ease against borderline starters / roster bubble players though. It just feels so hard every time on offense with him and it shouldn't. He was the 2nd overall pick 2 years ago. I've come to the realization that he will be nothing more than a backup in this league, maybe in 2 years when AR leaves, Zach will compete vs another vet or rookie to be the guy here? I don't know, but he would be the biggest outlier in all of sports. @Jonathan_Vilma brought forth the information last year on how insane it would be for him to be a successful QB in this league. I think he got a raw deal too. He should have never been the guy to start his rookie year and there should have been a veteran presence ahead of him not named Joe Flacco to help him out. Unfortunately, these are the cards he was dealt and it just is what it is at this point. Yeah that's a fair assessment and I'm somewhat in agreement with you. He was fine. Like I wrote above. It just feels so hard with him every time he's back there. He was the #2 pick and should be the best player on the field going up against guys who probably won't even be in the league come tomorrow.
"He should be able to move the all up and down the field with ease against borderline starters / roster bubble players though. It just feels so hard every time on offense with him and it shouldn't. He was the 2nd overall pick 2 years ago." I am not sure where to start here but I will try. Did you see Aaron Rodgers move up and down the field with ease? His first drive ended with a punt and the second drive was extended because of a penalty. AR was playing with the Jets starters and I do not believe those were all the Giants starters if any. With that being said Zach needs to push the ball more when he gets into the red zone instead of settling for field goals. That is secondary, what we want to see him do is stay in the pocket and go through his progressions. He is doing that. Take of the 2nd overall pick and hope the kids develop. You have already seen the AR influence on the kid lets hope he keeps progressing when we need him to start again. We already know Zach can make the splash plays he needs to learn to stay in the pocket go through his progression pre and post snap and deliver the ball on time. AR will be playing mostly boring football this season by getting rid of the ball quickly. (Think Top Brady) AR is 39 and he will not last long taking hits.
First off, he was the starting QB in preseason, so no, he didn’t play against third stringers. He played against first and second team defenses, like any other starter. That’s just pure nonsense. Second, if you actually watched the games, you couldn’t possibly make the second statement. Did he miss a couple? yes, did he made a lot of them? including some very precise tough throws, yes. Look at his completion rate, number of catches dropped, big first yard plays negated by penalty. He has improved leaps and bounds and that is exactly what we where hoping for. He seems to be on the right path.
You want to have your cake and eat it too. His first drive ended with a punt, but the ball was at the NYG 38 and got pushed back 15 because of Cobbs questionable penalty. But yet you site the second drive extending because of a penalty lol.
say what now? Rodgers had 2 series all preseason and threw a TD pass. Wilson had 20 series all preseason and got the same results, 1 TD pass. Compare Wilson to Boyle not Rodgers cause that's the level he's at.... Tim Boyle level
I really thought having Aaron Rodgers would end caring about the QB room beyond starter. Chiefs fans don’t worry about Blake Bortles. We are allowed to be at that level now.
I know It was on Gibson because I watched the play. If you watched the secondary and the LB you know it was zone coverage. There was a hole in the zone that Zach through to a spot. I cannot help that can not be objective. I cannot really care any less what you think. AR and the coaches are saying good things and that is what I care about. Zach will be QB 2 this season and have every chance to be the heir apparent. We will see what he does. I like the progression he made this off and preseason. We will see how he progresses.
Sorry man--we were talking about Sat nights game where he came in on the 3rd series. Your accusation that I don't actually watch the games or I just don't know what I'm watching is just trying to insult me. It's as false as your conclusions about ZW but your free to have them. I asked you specifically a while back about what you thought ZW is worth to other teams--this is a true objective valuation--of course you didn't respond. Ok--you say he's improved--IMO he's nowhere near what is necessary for a QB1 in the NFL. I saw bad footwork and that silly drop back thing he does when he just keeps going back and back etc. I also happen not to think that near goalline throw was high percentage at all--maybe Deandre Hopkins in his prime comes up with that--maybe not. But thanks for responding at all--I get you and others don't like contrary opinions. Peace.
I did my man--I agree the LB was jamming up that throw but also that Gibson was running into open space. A throw with touch over the middle was the proper play IMO.
and I get that, but with the new rule I think most teams will keep 3 QBs. anyone we cut to make room isn't likely to play all year anyway
white proved he can run the offense. the team rallied behind him. he can dink and dunk and let the skill players work. can't ask for much more then that out of a 3rd string QB
I don’t mind contrary opinions and by no means I would try to insult you and be disrespectful. That is not my intention. I also agree with you that he is not what is necessary to be QB 1 in this league at this juncture. But I believe he might get there in this system behind Rodgers. . I simply want to point out that some of what he is currently being critiqued for is not fair based on his performance and the opposition he faced, that’s all. Sorry if I came across otherwise. Peace.
If you can't see that Wilson has improved based off what we saw in the preseason then you're trying to hate on him. By no means would I be confident with him taking over but there's noticeable differences. I mean the dude completed 66% of his passes... I don't care who they were against, Zach Wilson just a year ago couldn't pull that off especially with 0 turnovers and 1 turnover-worthy throw (per PFF). He's a fine backup and he's clearly able to learn from Rodgers and apply in real life. It also makes you wonder how dogshit of a coach MLF was.
