Looks like SF also picks up his most of his salary this year and a good percentage next. Thats one way to take care of a problem--cut your losses and move on. Wish NYJ had that perspective.
"The Cowboys will pay Lance’s guaranteed salaries of $940,000 for 2023 and $5.3 million for 2024, according to Schefter." That's all the money due to him for the next two years. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/trey-lance-72382/
Douglas once traded a QB who was picked #3 overall by the Jets and got a 2nd, 4th and a 6th. Solid effort by the Niners though.
Maybe you're on to something Current Contract Trey Lance signed a 4 year, $34,105,275 contract with the San Francisco 49ers, including a $22,163,836 signing bonus, $34,105,275 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $8,526,319. In 2023, Lance will earn a base salary of $940,000, while carrying a cap hit of $940,000 and a dead cap value of $6,250,714.
I think the biggest thing is that they had balls enough to pick up a decent backup and let them all compete The Jets didn’t want any hurt feelings so Zach Wilson has to “compete“ with Tim Boyle. And what does it get is? A shitty backup AND a shitty 3rd string
SF bought a lottery ticket for $100, never scratched it and then decided to sell it to Dallas for $1. Genius!
I know it’s hard to imagine, being a Jets fan et al, but SF felt like they had a strong foundation, drafted well, have a great coach, and are building a dynasty. They didn’t trade all those picks for T. Lance, they traded for their choice of the top remaining QB for their dynasty. I kinda remember hearing it was the GM who wanted Lance and Kyle wanted Mac but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I never thought of that. Those 3 firsts and the third could have went for Mac Jones! They really did blow it
They bought a lottery ticket with a jackpot of $100. They found $100 stuck to the bottom of their shoe and gave the lottery ticket to a homeless man
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id...-nfl-team-trade-fits-how-49ers-got-wrong-next This pretty much sums it up.
That’s the guy who wrote we should’ve taken Bridgewater over Ridgers https://thejetpress.com/posts/espn-ny-jets-teddy-bridgewater-aaron-rodgers And we’re finishing last in the division https://sports.yahoo.com/espn-writer-picks-jets-finish-165119720.html You and he are allowed to have your opinions without ridicule. It was brave if you to align yourself with him.
Trade value feels right and $1M this year, $5M in '24 isn't going to screw your cap. What seems strange to me is that you'd have to assume that 'ideal'/Normal plan in Dallas is that Dak is healthy and playing all year and that they're good enough to make the post season again. In that scenario you can't see Lance getting any kind of field time that would make picking his 5th year option up at the end of the year. If they fall short of Jerry's expectations and he wants to 'reboot' with Lance then Dak is still sitting pretty with a no-trade clause and a massive cap hit. Basically I'm not seeing any kind of scenario outside injury where Trey Lance sees any game time before '25 when he's now 5 years removed from being a (FCS) starter.
