Green Bay Packers - NFL - RUMORS and Rumblings January 12, 2007 Written by Joe Arrigo - PackerChatters Staff Good day to all, I hope you have a good weekend. Here are your rumors from around the NFL for Friday 1-12-07. ~ ~ ~ The Jets are contemplating whether or not to offer their 1st round pick for Chargers FA to be Michael Turner. They feel no other RB at that spot in the draft could have the impact Turner could have and be the proven player Turner has been in the NFL. > http://www.packerchatters.com/op-ed/view.php?id=281
Their is nothing "proven" about Turner. But I don't do this deal. I lean alot more towards negotiating and offering a 2nd round pick for Mike.
Yeah I can't see them giving up a first round pick for Turner. Two reasons: 1. He's not a two-way threat coming out of the backfield. San Diego has not used his receiving abilities at all and it's unclear if he's going to be able to catch the ball well in the Jets offense. Obviously San Diego uses the tailback as a pass catcher quite a lot so having Turner not catching anything in the offense is a red flag to me. 80 rushes and 4 catches has got to be the most skewed distribution of touches I've ever seen out of a tailback. Oh, he had 57 rushes and ZERO catches in 2005... 2. First round runningbacks are generally a poor return on investment. It's worse in the top ten than the mid twenties but it's not pretty no matter how you look at it. Trading the 25 or 26 for a runningback who has never carried any NFL load is not all that different from drafting a runningback in that position. If the Jets let the 37 go for Turner I wouldn't be that disappointed, however I also wouldn't be sure we'd done the right thing until I saw Turner prove out into a strong option in the offense. It's easy to get a lot of yards in the NFL when you have LaDainian Tomlinson wearing down the defense in front of you.
I would be really really dissappointed if we gave up a first rounder for a guys who's been practically riding th ebench for 3 years, and is probably a product of the San Diego line/system. If there is ABSOLUTELY no one of value with our second round pick I guess I wouldn't be too upset giving that up, but no way a first rounder. This draft is just too deep at the positions we need (DE, OLB, CB, OT). I have a feeling if this deal does happen, it's going to be a draft day thing, the Jets will wait till their pick to see if anyone they want is still available, if not, they will trade it away for Turner.
isnt it nice to be able to say that and have complete faith in the front office. When's the last time we've been able to say that
He ain't worth a first...Last year we coulda gotten edge or alexander for a second and they're trying to get a 1st for Turner?!!! I don't think so...homey don't play that.
Why on earth trade a First round pick for a back up. I do not care who he is backing up either. My god last year Atlanta balked at trading a 1st. rd pick for a front line game breaking 5 game a season DE. Look where that got them. I have to believe this FO learned from the rape they performed last year and would not want the same thing done to them this year. I have to believe they value draft picks better than that.
NO. NO. NO. You don't trade high picks for unproven commodities. He has never done it in the NFL, and whose to say he is? This would be a big mistake by the Jets front office.
the charger's should be estatic if they get a second for turner! they're gonna lose him anyway in a year. i agree with whoever mentioned it happening on draft day and by then they'll be lucky to get a third. what has he done to be rated so high????
i also wouldn't assume it's the jets that will end up with him. the steelers may be interested along with others. the steeler's are also looking for a power back with speed.
i don't see this happening, nor should it. at the same time, i can hear Brian Schott asking for Turner. the only way this seems plausible is if (as The Predator said) they make this deal on draft day, at our pick. and if SD really wants that 25th pick, maybe send a R4 pick also along with Turner. this wouldn't be a smart move before the draft. cheers
Corey Dillon, in his prime, a proven veteran and injury free went for a second rounder. That's the price. Anything higher is a bad move.
BS, I dont believe it for one second. No way in hell that Tangini is even thinking about offering our first rounder for Michael Turner.
