I don't think Saleh lied, he just didn't anticipate that Max AND Turner would play like 3d string PS tackles AND Warren not ready to play. Maybe he thought some of these things would happen but not all. So, at best right now (aside from AVT playing out of position) we have 2 decent tackles on the team. This is assuming Brown is decent, which is far from certain, but at least this has not been ruled out like for the aforementioned guys. So, with only 2 tackles, one of whom (Brown) who can only play LT, there is no choice really, but to put Becton as a starting RT, knee permitting...

the sack was a miscommunication that he got dinged for. and IIRC sacks also count as a pressure so basically it was 1 pressure allowed

So many people wrote off Becton when he reinjured the knee that was never properly fixed. The level of hate and vitriol was through the roof. And I'm not talking about critiquing his play. I'm talking full out character assassination.

I hope he has a phenomenal year because the team needs him to have one. I feel really good about him. He could have an all pro year at RT.

I think that Becton is the best tackle we have, and he should be protecting Rodgers' blind side. I also agree that Becton and Brown are our two best OTs, that it would be best if both started, which means Becton will have to play RT.

I hope that you're right about Saleh not lying and just being mistaken. I want to like Saleh, I really do, but he keeps making comments that imo show that he is very biased by his feelings towards players and his relationship with them, and he speaks out of both sides of his mouth. Earlier in the offseason, he said that the best 5 players would start on the OL, which would imo indicate Brown at LT and Becton at RT. Then later when Becton said that he is an LT, Saleh said "earn it." Then later, he said that there would be a competition between Becton and Brown for the LT spot. Becton showed up for the competition, Brown didn't. Becton has been playing very well. The only questions were when he would be able to trust in his knee and if he can stay healthy. Saleh had also raved about Brown's playing injured last season when he didn't have to, and I think that biased him towards Brown to start with, which I can understand because Brown was here and battled through the injuries and Becton wasn't even here long due to getting re-injured. That is basically Becton's fault for getting the wrong surgery, and not working hard enough to get into shape, and showing up overweight and out of shape, and then getting re-injured. There is possibly a team and training staff component to his getting re-injured if they didn't believe him when he said that his knee wasn't right and told him to get back out there. Saleh also admitted that he hasn't trusted Becton in a long time. So, imo the fact that he is obviously biased towards Brown, hasn't trusted Becton, and then told Becton that there would be a competition is at best disingenuous, and at worst a downright manipulative lie. In terms of the plan, I have no problems with the plan. My problems are limited to what Saleh has said.

Saleh also spoke glowingly of Mitchell and his grit, and then said that Becton has to prove that he can play a whole game before he can take reps with the 1s. Well, how is he supposed to do that? When the Jets are playing some 1st stringers, and the other strings during preseason games, and Saleh won't allow Becton to take reps with the 1s, how is Becton supposed to play a whole game to prove to Saleh he can? Further, his comment about it not being fair to let Becton practice with the 1s is utter nonsense imo. Becton is the best OT and perhaps only AVT can claim to be a better OL than Becton. It's not fair to Rodgers, the offense, the defense,or the team as a whole to play a lesser player because Becton hasn't proven he can play a whole game. To me, that just sounds like typical BS an authority figure makes up that is basically impossible to achieve for the victim of such an edict, so that the authority figure can do whatever he wants. Everyone is acknowledging how great Becton looks. Everyone is saying it's time Becton gets reps with the 1s and that he has earned the starting RT job. We haven't heard Saleh say that yet, or that he will even get to practice with the 1s. That is my problem with Saleh. He's allowing his personal feelings to take precedence over what is best for the team and best for his players.

The article alone makes everything look good/kosher, but when I put it into the context of Saleh's comments regarding Brown, Mitchell, and Becton it brings Saleh's handling of the situation into question. Please see my response to Borat (post #24) for a more in-depth explanation.

Nah this is just to feed your narrative that you’re right about all of the players you champion and it’s always someone else’s fault if they don’t play well.

Which is kind of silly because other than getting smoked by Brian Burns in practice, it appears as though Becton is on track to start without issue to begin the season.

Becton was on a pitch count per the medical team and training staff, not the coaching staff. The idea was to make sure the knee was, in fact, stable, and get Mechi to overcome any trepidation he may have had. That's also the reason he took 2nd string snaps at LT before moving to RT; comfort.
The "prove he can play a whole game", wasn't a knock on Becton, it was the approach the medical team was taking with the knee.

.. but If that article Is true. Which It appears to be, makes sense. Then this was just Saleh giving you an answer based on an explanation that the trainers and medical staff have given him.

    You see that, right? No?

No, with what Saleh has said and done, he has contradicted himself, not been honest. The protocol says nothing about Becton not being able to practice with the 1s. That's all Saleh.

Did you read my response to Borat, and how I showed how Saleh has made contradictory statements?

I don’t try and put too much into what coaches say publicly…a lot of it is coachspeak, some of it is disinformation, some of it is to motivate a player or a team, etc.

Hard to get too wound up over it

Much like I don’t put stock into anything a GM says leading up to the draft, or even after it…they will never show their hand

No man because I think you are the only one that feels this way right now. I think you are off base but I guess we shall see soon enough.

They aren't going to put him against the best of the best right out of the gate If they truly are putting Becton on a specific plan. He's had a very rough go with that knee for years now, It's important to do It the right way.

Just because he didn't highlight and detail that exact plan for you, doesn't make him a liar. You got bits and pieces of It. "Coach Speak"

Now, with that article, It kind of brings to light the bigger picture. It's really not a big deal I don't think.

I guess that's what I need to do with Saleh. I take a man at his word. If his word isn't good or true, it's hard for me to trust or like that man. I understand that there is "coach speak" and that they don't want to give away any secrets. In this case, it wouldn't have bothered me nearly as much if it wasn't about Becton, and it didn't give at least the appearance that there was bias against Becton. Becton is one of my favorite players on the Jets and I think he is one of the most talented players they have. If he can stay healthy for the rest of his career, I think he has true HOF potential. Therefore any appearance of the Jets jerking him around or not giving him a fair chance pisses me off because I think it's stupid of them to do that.

Yeah, but I wouldn’t get too worked up about it…Parcells for example was a master at motivation…he knew when to coddle a player or when to bag on him to get the most out of it.

You like the player…so do I…WHEN he can actually stay healthy. To me, he’s got great natural talent and is just so big and strong and moves well for such a large man, but the truth is he’s missed twice as many games as he’s played, and he just hasn’t come across as a mature professional who is ALL IN…he’s come across, rightly or wrongly, as a bit of a spoiled, entitled, and immature kid. All appearances…I don’t know the man personally. Saleh does.

So I wouldn’t get too worked up about how he is being treated, and I certainly wouldn’t use that as a barometer about how I judge Saleh. If you trust the GM and Coaches to evaluate players better than us fans, then why wouldn’t you trust Saleh to know how to best motivate Becton?

I too hope Becton can deliver, but I don’t fully trust that he can. But time will tell. For now, he should be getting run with the starters as I do think he’s a better tackle than anyone we’ve been playing ahead of him, but I’m sure that will all work itself out.

Becton will have no problem getting a contract next season, whether it's with the Jets or not.

yeah I know. Problem is the talent is there which is why it's frustrating but when your a 1st round pick who missed 2.5 years out of 3 over a 6 month injury it's understandable

Maybe the situation has changed. Maybe they thought that Mitchell or someone else would be ready to play right tackle and Brown and Becton would battle for starting left tackle. We don't know. Also, maybe the "whole game" test of Becton's knee will be in practice. Again, we don't know exactly what that means. I'm sure there's plenty we don't know and maybe Saleh's answers are pure PR. Who knows...

I could be off base, but I'm not alone I've seen posters on other boards say the same thing unprompted by me, and I thought of it independently of them before I ever saw their posts.

I thought about their thinking it would easier to go against the 2s than the 1s, but with the quality of the Jets Edges, they really ALL are 1s talent and production wise. I know that Becton has taken reps in practice against McDonald, JJ, and Huff. He may have taken reps against the others too. Is that easier than what he'd face with the 1s????

I agree that it's important that Becton be brought back the right way. As I said, I have no problem with the Dr's. procedure. I think that is wise. It may not be that big of a deal. I know I'm more attuned and sensitive to it because I'm a big fan of Becton and believe in him. He's one of the few players that I've wanted the Jets to draft and they actually did. The NYC media and Jets fans have treated him unfairly and brutally the last 2 years, and I haven't liked it at all, so it's only natural that it would raise alarm bells with me if it seems that Saleh is even remotely shafting/cheating Becton. Seeing that post on another Jets fan site, helped in one way, but it also highlighted the contradictions for me.

    Thanks for your response.
