Yesterday's game gave Jet fans lots to inspire hope. To some extent this extends to the OL. However, Zach clearly was not given enough time to complete passes downfield. And isn't it still questionable going into the season with Mitchell and Turner as your best RT's? Of course, Becton could possibly move to RT when Brown comes back. If Becton's knee doesn't hold up, though, we're again stuck with two below average RT's. I want to do better for AR's championship run. For me, the best currently available trade possibility is the Cardinals' Josh Jones. He is now benched behind first round pick Paris Johnson. However, he has experience at both RT and LT and he has improved over his three years in the league. He was highly rated for his athleticism before the 2020 draft, but it was noted that he needed to build up his strength. PFF ratings indicate that his play during his first two years in the league was not good, but he played well last year. So maybe his work in the weight room has addressed the strength issue. In any case, I think JD needs to make an additional move to shore up the tackle position.
I don’t know enough to say who would be the best tackle to go get, but I do feel we need to go get somebody…Turner has not been good from all the reports I’ve seen, Becton would be great IF he can stay healthy, which is a HUGE if, Brown hopefully can be solid but he’s almost 40, Mitchell hasn’t had good reports yet either, and I haven’t heard squat about Warren. So yeah, OT is a huge question mark right now and the answers currently on our roster are all questionable
No really sure how to post this tweet, but thought it was interesting so I'm just goin to copy and paste it here. It is very long and Twitter links don't work still I believe? This is from BuffaloJetFan on Twitter. What the numbers say about the #Jets best 5 man combination on the OL (long tweet warning) *The score for each player is an average of their snaps per pressure/ sack/ penalty allowed & run grade from '22. The higher the score, the better* Current camp 1st team LT: Turner (75) LG: Laken (92) C: McGovern (165) RG: AVT(196) RT: Mitchell (99) Average score: 125.8 Projected week 1 lineup LT: Brown (177) LG: Laken (92) C: McGovern (165) RG: AVT(196) RT: Mitchell (99) Average score: 145.8 *FYI: Becton's rookie LT score: 159* Switching AVT to RT / Schweitzer to RG LT: Brown (177) LG: Laken (92) C: McGovern (165) RG: Schweitzer/Risner (183) RT: AVT (190) Average score: 161.4 *Schweitzer's score is from '21 when he played guard. Dalton Risner is a FA who posted an identical score playing guard in '22.* Trading for Zach Martin LT: Brown (177) LG: Laken (92) C: McGovern (165) RG: Martin (223) RT: AVT (190) Average score: 169.5 Summary: *The Jets best OL likely involves AVT at RT *A Martin trade would not improve the line enough to justify the massive price *Bringing in Risner to compete with Schweitzer can patch up RG for a reasonable price. *The biggest upgrade will come from Brown replacing Turner End Tweet AVT is just going to have to play RT if Becton can't get on the right side. It just is what it is. I highly doubt Brown comes back unless he was gtd the starting LT job and Turner absolutely stinks and is nothing more than depth.
Good post but I don't think you can count on Duane Brown to put up a 177 in whatever that metric is. We could easily end up in a situation where AVT is playing right tackle, and we still don't have an answer at left tackle.
Most definitely. Another year older for Brown as well, but for whatever it's worth, the guy did play on a separated shoulder for almost all of '22. Between Becton and Brown, we just need to hope one of the pans out I guess. I know it is preseason, but Becton has been solid so far outside of that one miscommunication vs Carolina. I hope he can get another 30+ snaps on Saturday vs Tampa.
I hope it works out, but I still think we should add another OT. James Hurst of the Saints is probably the best bet, and there are rumors that he could get traded. And the Saints need a defensive end; we can give them Carl Lawson, who's going to get pushed out by Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald anyway, and call it a day. Should be a fair trade: Lawson is a couple years younger, but he's less durable. And both players were graded in the 60s by PFF last year.
Here are some OLine preseason grades so far: Max 50.1 Billy 62.3 Warren 63.4 Becton 70.8 Laken 80.3 Tipp 56.2 CMG 55.4 Schweitzer 52 Colon 66.1
I agree a player for player trade looks like the Jets best option to add another OT before opening day … not sure which players but your example would definitely be a good and fair trade dealing from the most stacked position on the team.
I wouldn't trade Lawson. His power to speed style compliments Huff and WMD very well. Another year off that achilles so I expect big things from him this year. That DL is going to push the Eagles front for most sacks in a single season. I wouldn't touch anything there IMO. Between Brown, Becton, Turner, Mitchell, and AVT -- figure it out. I also think the training camp woes of our OL are being slightly overblown b/c of how good our 2nd and 3rd guys are. Look at what that group did to the Panthers starting OL. Also having Rodgers undercenter will automatically improve the OL compared to having zach or boyle undercenter.
I’ve always felt AVT would move to tackle if need be. I’m also not sure why some felt Becton wouldn’t make the team or would be traded. He’s trying to get into football shape and to fully trust the knee again. So there’s a process to it. I’m glad he pushed a bit more to play the other day but he will need to continue to keep at it.

And then we get to watch Wilson scramble in circles all over the pocket like a squirrel looking for a nut.
As bad as I think we could use a solid OT, I’d be really hesitant to trade one of our DL…we have several very good edge players…no one is quite Nick Bosa yet, but damn we have a bunch of seriously bad dudes…and as a group, we could be looking at Sack Exchange v2 I wouldn’t want to break that up quite yet…not when we are going all in this year and next with AR. I’d probably sooner move AVT to RT and see what we can do at RG and LT I get the appeal of saying hey, we have a bunch of really good DE’s, but that’s exactly what makes us special up front now…we can go Lawson, JFM, JJ, Huff and McD, not to mention Clemons. With Q in the middle, that’s a BAADDD DL Let’s roll with it…it’s the heart of our D, and really the heart of our team After decades of not drafting DE’s, we have a bunch of really good promising players where we can rotate and the backups are not much, if any, dropoff from the starters…let’s throw that at Josh Allen and Belichick and Tua all day long
I’d like to see this combo getting some first team reps: LT Becton LG Tomlinson C McGovern RG Tippman RT AVT Have Brown and Mitchell as backup Tackles. Carter as redshirt and emergency T (he really should get some G reps too). Schweitzer as backup IOL, and we could always kick AVT back inside in case of injuries. Release Turner he’s a liability. 9 total OL due to AVTs versatility. This would free up a spot to keep a young TE, RB or WR.
My hope is that our Week 1 starting OL looks like this: LT Brown LG Tomlinson C Tippman RG AVT RT Becton This feels like the best 5 guys we have right now and if they stay healthy, they can be a very solid line.
Really think we need a RT at some point this year, whether we put Becton or AVT there, it's not ideal or long term. AVT's arms are too short and Becton has been training at LT so if anything, I think they roll with a Max Mitchell or someone at RT because pre-season, none of these guys have worked at RT. The good thing is the depth on the OL is sold, just not RT. LT: Becton and Brown, solid. LG: Tomlinson, average starter. C: Tippman and CMcG, solid. RG: AVT, Tippman, solid RT: Billy Turner?
Our only differences player wise in the 5 is Brown v McGovern. Between Brown and Becton they battling injuries so I’m figuring they collectively handle the LT spot. Brown also 38. Correct me if I’m wrong on any of the below assumptions I’m making. I believe Becton has solely been playing LT this camp, and it’s more comfortable with his knee issue. This is why I think AVT should switch to RT now. Also thought I heard on Jets Nation that the coaches preferred not having a rookie C with Rodgers. Could be wrong info. But this is why I’d like Tippman to start trying reps at RG. He pulls well could be a fit. Btw really good work on the camp update posts. It’s appreciated!
I want Becton to start at LT but I'd like to see AVT play his best position which is guard. RT is the real problem. Turner is awful. Can anyone else play RT besides AVT?
Turner looks a little skinny to me. Maybe its the number (54) or the long hair but damn he looks like he has a smaller frame than the tight ends out there.
