Why? He doesn't have full confidence in his knee yet. That's pretty standard for people who have been through knee surgery. His confidence that his knee is fine will grow as he practices and plays more. I thought that he showed maturity and great sense to err on the side of caution in a meaningless game. I've read that a number of players were slipping and having problems on the turf.
One overcomes that by practicing, playing and moving on it in games. It will come. Fixing the problem is a process, and he's going through that process now.
That's a ridiculous take! The turf was a problem. A number of players slipped on it last night. He was being smart and erring on the side of caution. It was a meaningless game in the grand scheme of things. If he had played and re-injured himself after feeling the turf bother his knee in warmups, you and everyone would have killed him for that.
If I thought it was just a confidence issue I'd be far less concerned. Feeling pain and discomfort in a knee that has been surgically repaired twice, before the season even starts, is not a good sign in my opinion. Hopefully my fears are misguided and he plays every snap in every game this year without a problem. We'll see.
That's fair. One small point however. Even though he had surgery on the knee twice, he said the first surgery was not the right surgery and it basically did nothing to help. I understand the fact that they still cut his knee open and did something could affect the knee, but supposedly, the second surgery did the needed repair. I'm not doctor, but it's my understanding that there can be some pain experienced as one is getting back in football shape, and that it's completely natural for players to lack confidence in their knee, but unless the surgery failed or the knee gets re-injured, once the player has gotten over that initial fear and lack of confidence in the knee, everything is fine.
I think it was an ego/image thing. All the "good" players got to sit this one out. Mekhi is big into image. He's seeing Sauce and Rodgers and Q and even so/so guys like Uzomah on the sidelines yuckin it up and embarrassed that he was playing so he took himself out
The head is always behind the bod, after serious injury/surgical repair. I thought his comment about the "new normal" he has to get his head around, was his most telling comment. It shows me he's starting to get it. I give him a pass for yesterday. The key is how he responds from here onward, now that he's beginning to understand his knee may hurt, but it doesn't mean it's not sound. .
I think there are two takeaways here. One, it was encouraging to see Mekhi on the field and to play very well. Now, he only played basically an equivalent of one series: 7 snaps, but after not playing in two years, it's a start. Given small sample here plus the last 2 practices, it seems like he is at least on his way to regaining old form. There is still over a month left before the season starts. I also think it was a smart thing for him to get off the turf when he started feeling something in the knee. Whether it is mental or physical or both, there is no need to risk it. He needs time. And that is the second takeaway. Now, is a month enough time to get from where he is to full game starter? I personally don't think so. I think he will start the season on the bench unless there will be other injuries (where is Duane Brown?), which will force him into the lineup. I think Max and Duane are likely starters with Mekhi maybe getting some reps early and then ultimately perhaps becoming a starter as season progresses. Not unlike Breece situation. Overall though, my expectation for Becton for this season was very low, and after horrendous start in the camp, he gradually improved, where so far from what I have seen I think the news is more positive than negative. If you expected him to start and play full games since day 1, you may be disappointed though.
Btw, if Mekhi will not be ready to start day 1, and Max has to, it is not a good news. He did not have a good game against the back-ups of Browns. Pass pro was solid, but could not generate any running game. And Billy Turner is even worse than him. We desperately need Brown to be back and play well. If Max and Billy start game 1, we are in trouble.
I think the real problem Is that he hurt It not once, but twice. Same knee... Back to back. That would mess with anyone's mental. Not everyone would be as cautious I don't think but he knows his body better than anyone. At some point he does have to lean into that knee and do his job, but he has some time yet. I don't think people truly understand that though.
I have had enough of this guy. Again today at practice he didn't play. Said playing right tackle hurts his boo boo. Guy played 7 snaps in preseason and took himself out. I have a feeling he won't even be on the roster game 1. This was a real bust of a pick. Usually these tackles ala D'Brickashaw Ferguson work out but unfortunately for us we get Becton who has no will to play. Jeez we are gonna have a shitty line with backups all over the place including Turner, and Max. Hope Rodgers doesn't quit on us because of the pathetic line.
Becton abstained from lateral movements in warm ups today from my observation. Also, when the ones were going. Becton was behind the wall of all the players (and the OL group) standing by himself for like 5 minutes. Weird stuff.
thanks for the information. Joe Douglas needs to trade for a tackle, Becton can self-diagnose elsewhere
I don’t know what his info is based on. I saw all the one on ones and he held his own, pancaking a DL or two. Now we are going to over react based on an observation by a fan during warm ups.
