From the KC Star: The nights are still long, the questions still annoying, and Herm Edwards emerged from his office Thursday afternoon with a full face of stubble and roughly one-tenth of his evaluations completed. Edwards was feeling a little ornery. What was dubbed as an end-of-season news conference at Arrowhead Stadium turned into a lengthy rant about offense and some heavy uncertainty over the man who will be running it come September. ?I really don?t care if we?re in the top five in offense,? Edwards said. ?Those are real good stats you can put up when you don?t go to the playoffs. ? Yeah, we?ve got this top offense, we?ve got this circus out here. It makes everyone feel good. But I?d rather go to the playoffs than have the top offense. ?Did I think our offense was going to decline a little bit? Yeah. We got a new offensive coordinator. We got some new players. We?ve got some players who have been hurt. The quarterback was switched twice. Is it on me? Yeah, I changed the offense. Right. Head coaches get blamed anyway. Blame me for everything. That?s fine. I don?t mind.? Had it not been for the sweater and slacks that replaced his traditional sweatshirt and shorts, it almost looked as if Edwards had lived at the stadium in the five days since the Chiefs? early exit from the AFC playoffs. Rarely has a postseason berth caused so many negative vibes in Kansas City. Rarely has the offense looked so disjointed. But Edwards said he won?t base his decisions solely on the 23-8 thumping at Indianapolis, a game in which the Chiefs didn?t even muster up a first down until late in the third quarter. As fans called for the exit of longtime starting quarterback Trent Green, Edwards gave another endorsement for Green as the starter in 2007. But unlike the thumbs-up from another news conference last month, this one wasn?t quite as emphatic. ?All of the starters are starters right now,? Edwards said. ?A lot of things could change, but right now, he?s the starter. And right now when we start the 2007 season, obviously, there will be competition. I think that?s the whole key. It doesn?t matter if a guy?s a starter on paper or not. What you want to make sure you do with your football team, and we did a pretty good job of it this year, is you create competition at the position.? Edwards also said that the front office has ?some tough decisions to make? about personnel. Green, who will be 37 this fall, threw seven touchdowns and nine interceptions and carried a 74.1 passer rating. He missed half of the season because of a severe concussion and had three turnovers against the Colts. Green is scheduled to make a base salary of $7.2 million in 2007 and will count $9.1 million against the salary cap. Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson said Thursday that he?ll probably talk to Green about reworking his deal. ?I?m certain that not too far down the road we will have some discussions,? Peterson said. A lot has changed in the one year and three days since Edwards came to Kansas City. The defense has gone from woeful to respectable; the offense plummeted from a No. 1 ranking to the middle of the pack. In an odd turn of events late Saturday night, the offensive stars said they let the defense down. Seven of the starters on offense will be thirtysomethings this fall. But that?s assuming 12-time Pro Bowl guard Will Shields decides to play another year and the Chiefs can get a deal worked out with tight end Tony Gonzalez. It?s also assuming Edwards won?t blow up his veteran offense and start over. ?I don?t know if you blow it up,? he said. ?You have some hard decisions to make, but they?re not that hard. They take care of themselves if you do it methodically and if you look at how you?re going to look as a football team two years down the road and further. ?There?s going to be youth on this team, period. You have no choice eventually. I mean, eventually, you have to go that way whether you like it or not. It?s going to change. It?s going to have to change. Carl believes this, and I believe this ? you do it through the draft.? Peterson, who sat next to Edwards at a table, defended his coach, then chuckled at a couple of his animated responses. He said Edwards did the one thing he asked him to do first ? get Kansas City back to the playoffs. On a busy offseason day at Arrowhead Stadium, they wanted more. ?He got us there,? JetsTillDeath, I've always thought you had the best avatar. You called it early. Herm will win a Super Bowl when there are two teams left playing in the NFL and Dungy is coaching the other team. Safe to say... never.
Peter King on WFAN Benigno show said yesterday that the KC/IND. game was the worst NFL coached game he EVER witnessed.
I start reading his double talk and my stomach start to churn just like it did when he was here. Herm blames everyone but himself. I have always said about Herm that he will never be a truly successful coach until he learns to sincerely take personal responsibility. The problem is, if he did take personal responsiblity he would quickly come to the conclusion that the way he operates his organization will always result in something less than ultimate success. Herm is a short term bandage, he can rally someone elses troops to do some good things. But as it stands, he just does not have the ability to run a franchise and manage all of the intricacies. Thinking back, getting a 4th round pick for him was the steal of the centruy. Dealing Herm was akin to selling a bag of rocks. I am just so glad he is not here.
This was KC's 3rd Playoff appearance since Joe Montana was their QB and it was their first in 3 years. KC fans should be ahppy w/ some progress for a change.
KC was a better team last year and had a better record. Making the playoffs isn't always the best measuring stick.

Would you rather be 10-6 and miss the playoffs or 9-7 and make it? KC also lost alot of talent from last year's team and played half a year w/o their starting QB against a sched much more difficult than ours. The facts are KC missed the playoffs 2 years in a row and 7 of 8 and Herm steps in and they make just like we missed it 2 straight years and 8 of 9 and herm steaps in and we make it. He may not be a great coach but he's alot better than people want to admit, making the playoffs 4 of 6 years(he's 3rd in PO appearances in since 2001) is not an accident. Why don't you practice what you preach?
What progress? They are an old team with no quality young QB to step in when Green looks to be about done. There big RB will be an FA after next year and is wiped out and pissed that he was abused by the HC. They just came off a brutal playoff loss where the team was completely expossed. They made some progress on D but they have slid big time on O. Some of the progress on D was signing guys like Law who is also about done. This is a team who brought in a new coach to rebuild and they are not rebuilding they are crumbling from the foundation out. He is in a division with two teams that allready have their QB's of the future not only on their teams but playing. KC took a step back this year and hasn't done anything to address the QB issue.
Herm's ball boy has arrived in this thread, I see. :rofl2: I really do feel bad for Chiefs fans. They've done nothing to deserve the punishment of watching Herm ruin their team. He should be coaching the Dolphins, now that would be fun to watch.
What is he ruining exactly? he took them to the playoffs for just the 4th time since 1995(thanks for the correction cakes). He did not inherit a dynasty and run it into the ground. Just like ruined us, it ws much mroe fun missing the playoffs in '99 and '00 than going in 3 of 4 years- damn him for ruining us!
