It's just such a horrible situation. I feel really bad for the families involved.

Banging sounds heard on sonar buoy?

    Wow... there's hope I guess.

According to some reports, including one from a CBS science editor who did the trip and story a couple of years ago there was such redundancy that there were seven ways that would bring the ship to the surface, some requiring no input from anyone on board. I agree there was probably a catastrophic failure of compression. Apparently that was something that had been foreseen by one of the engineers who was instrumental in its construction and was fired by the company.

OceanGate, company behind missing Titanic tourist sub, once subject of lawsuit over safety complaints

OceanGate, the company behind the submersible that went missing while visiting the wreckage of the Titanic, was once the subject of a massive lawsuit from an employee who alleged he was fired because he had raised safety concerns over how deep the vessel could descend.

There’s a 1950s era sub up here the Navy decommissioned and it’s now an above-ground museum open to the public. I went in once and thought I was going to pass out from claustrophobia. No fucking chance I’d voluntarily get in anything like that every again, let alone go under water in it.

What were they thinking? It looks like a tin can, a ghetto science experiment

They showed on tv what the company said on their website about why they didn’t get all the safety approvals, it was like a con artist explained it

BTW it occurred to me that one of our greatest natural resources is not being used in this rescue/recovery.

We haven't heard word one out of Elon yet. Normally he'd be twittering like a madman letting everybody know exactly what needed to be done, what he'd had for breakfast, and how overpriced Tesla stock was.

Another victory for woke. Or perhaps the entire operation was a woke ruse to kill billionaires. In that case, well played.

The cave thing was little kids, these are some billionaires. I can see why a guy like Musk, concerned with his image, would put his face in front of one and not the other

I don't think Musk is concerned with his image. I think he just can't help himself. Trump Syndrome in a smarter but not necessarily any wiser individual.

Big wave surfing, motorcycles, racecars, skydiving... etc.. etc.

It's never a good thing to see people perish, but in this case A bunch of rich folks went on an expensive joyride. It wasnt like they were trying to help humanity, or found themselves in randomly catastrophic situation. I'd assume they knew of the risks involved...

May they rest in peace. Condolences to their family and friends....

I find the Elon hate to be rather odd.

The guy has done more for the environment, free speech & space exploration than any single individual.

Oh yeah... he banged Amber Heard without getting burned.

Stories like this make me think of the Kursk, the Russians were willing to let 100 submariners die a horrific death rather than allow us to assist although no idea if we really would have been able to save them

Plenty of subs have been lost at sea but the USS Thresher is pretty scary... routine testing. Leak in the engine room, lost communication and just sank to "crush level". No thanks

Depending on the context of "burned", I might find that hard to believe.

He talks too much about stuff that he has a marginal understanding of. Given his position at the head of several influential public companies that talk gets disseminated widely because everything a guy at the head of a public company says publicly get disseminated. Almost everybody else in that position is very careful about what they choose to say publicly. Elon Musk revels in the fact that lots of people are listening to him and he talks about stuff that is completely unrelated to his companies in the process.

It's just a very bad place to come from and one that is potentially extraordinarily harmful to civic discourse and propagation of a truth-based culture.

No they’re not nor should they be. You just don’t agree with him which is why it twists your panties.
