Makes a lot of sense. The guy is a good #3 WR. May even finally realize his potential with Rodgers and be a good #2. The guy actually produced as a solid #2 with a half decent QB (Tanny). Now he got Rodgers. His salary is not outrageous. Why cut him? There is no one else better on the open market. If we got OBJ, maybe, but now we need him.
My view is a lot simpler than all that. Let JD worry about getting us under the cap. We need to keep for AR and the D as many weapons as we can fit under the budget now. We have a two year window and many will come off the books next year if this goes well, Davis and Lawson and possibly CJ for starters. One can argue that we are not getting anyone better than CD at this time, big, knows the offense, can flourish under AR again. I just don’t know how we can keep both CD and Mims though.
Why would we want to cut him? I thought we were trying to win ? Who is the better option? What are we doing when injuries happen? Just stop
I agree that JD will handle getting us under the cap. He's done a great job in that regard so far, yet, several cynical, pessimistic, negative Nancys, Debbie Downers proclaim the sky is falling. Why don't you see how we can keep both CD and Mims? You just said that JD will handle the cap. Why wouldn't we want to keep as much depth as we can? CD cannot stay healthy. Why would we want to get rid of his cheap replacement, especially when we haven't even seen how he plays with AR and Hackett? I believe that we're going to see a much more effective, efficient, and dangerous offense this season if our OL can stay healthy. I think it's going to be shocking to us and perhaps to many in the NFL, how much better our offense will be with AR at QB and Hackett as OC.
Good points, To your question, I'm not suggesting to get rid of Mims or CD, I worry about a particular group getting squeezed during the final 52. It seems like for the OL and DL they will go a little heavy, just based on the OL woes of last year and the constant rotation on the D line. So if you balance the rest of the D positions to the normal level, then WRs, TEs and RBs will be re balanced to reach the 52. How many WRs we keep versus TEs and RB will be a challenge. I suppose to the extend that some can play special teams that is a plus, but it will be sporty to keep the amount of potential talent we have within the 52. Hopefully the practice squad can protect some of our key rookies and high potential UDFA. Nice problem to have I suppose.
Moms will be gone if he doesn’t learn to play special teams. With all these vets and Wilson obviously not playing SpT’s the fringe players at all positions will probably solidify whether or not they make the team based on if and how well they play SpT’s. Hardmann obviously plays SpT’s but no other WR does. Mims won’t be valuable enough to the WR room to warrant keeping him over another guy at a different position who also plays SpT’s
They never did like Mims anyway so I don't see how he sticks on the 53. I don't understand why they didn't package him in with Moore at the time of that trade.
Probably because CLE didn’t want him. Mims doesn’t have any trade value. 3 complete seasons in the league, nothing worthwhile to show for it. Mims has poor technique. He catches the ball in his body and jumps for passes he doesn’t need to jump for. I’m willing to look past MLF having him in the doghouse for not knowing every route tree at every WR position, but seeing him jumping for crossing patterns trying to catch it in his belly is just amateur hour. Couple that with an unwillingness to play special teams and honestly I can’t see the value in keeping Mims.
I believe that you're mistaken. If you weren't he probably wouldn't be here. I think it was MLF that didn't like him. Saleh praised him several times last season and JD has been supportive as well. If he doesn't improve his play in TC and preseason, he could be traded or released if one of the rookie UDFAs shows serious potential. As it is, I think he's safe. They like Davis, but know that he has problems staying healthy. Mims is Davis' backup, and he's a very good scheme fit, so why would they be in a hurry to trade him just because fans don't like him?
Thanks. Yes, we haven't had this problem in a very long time, but it's a problem that the better teams like the Chiefs, Bills, Eagles and others experience every year. There are players that they like and want to keep but simply can't due to numbers. I agree that the Jets will probably want to keep 10 OL and 10 DL, but I doubt that they will be able to for the reason you cited that other positions will get squeezed. It's early, but just for fun since we were discussing how tight things will probably be, I decided to create a possible roster. Barring one or more of the rookie UDFAs blowing the CS away or God forbid, we suffer a major injury or two, here's one possibility of what the final roster could look like: OFFENSE (25) QB (3): Rodgers, Wilson, and Streveler RB (4): Hall, Carter, Abanikanda, Knight WR (6): Wilson, Lazard, Davis, Hardman, Mims, Cobb TE (3): Uzomah, Conklin, Ruckert OL (9): Brown, Becton, Carter, Mitchell, AVT, Tippman, Tomlinson, Schweitzer, only 1 of these two make the roster: McGovern and Colon DEFENSE (25) DL (9): Lawson, JJ, Huff, McDonald, JFM, Clemons, Q Williams, Woods, Jefferson LB (4): Mosely, Q Williams, K. Alexander, Z. Barnes CB (6): Sauce, Reed, MC II, Hardee, Hailassie, Echols S (5): Clark, Adams, Whitehead, Bernard-Converse, Parks STs (3) LS (1): Hennessy P (1): Morehead K (1): Zuerline As you can see in this example, on offense, at QB Boyle doesn't make the final roster. He was useful for helping to install the offense, but has practically no value as a player. Streveler will run the scout team. None of the rookie UDFA WRs would make the team, Yeboah and 7th round pick Jack Kuntz would not make the team, and McGovern could wind up the odd man out if Tippman, Colon, and Schweitzer all outplay him in TC. On defense, Solomon Thomas doesn't make the team since JFM and Clemons can play inside. At LB assuming that Kwon Alexander signs at some point, neither Hamsah Nasirildeen, nor Jamien Sherwood, nor any of the rookie UDFAs make the team. At CB Bryce Hall doesn't make the team as Echols has played better and the Jets paid Hailasse a lot of guaranteed money. Of course Hall might make the team over Hailassie, this is just speculation for the purpose of showing how tight things will probably be. At S, Ashtyn Davis doesn't make the final cut, but if he steps it up or one of the rookie UDFAs has a strong camp, Whitehead's roster spot could be in jeopardy. Of course Lawson, C. Davis or Whitehead could be cut or traded, which would help open up a roster spot. McGovern might hold off Tippman in the C competition as the starter, which could impact Schweitzer or Colon. If Alexander doesn't re-sign, then Sherwood would make the team, but only having 4 LBs is not ideal. Where else could they cut? OL and DL are the two biggest position groups, but Saleh and Ulbrich like to throw waves of players at opposing teams, and the OL needs solid depth. The DL is a little unbalanaced with 6 Edges and only 3 DTs, but that is mitigated by the fact that both JFM and Clemons can play inside. Would they trade or cut Lawson so that they could keep Solomon Thomas? I doubt it. On the OL, neither Mitchell, nor Warren Carter would make it to the PS, so the Jets have to keep all 4 OTs. Since there is great flexibility among AVT, Schweitzer, Colon, and McGovern, and Tippman supposedly could play OG, I suppose the Jets might only keep 4 IOL which would lower the OL to 8 players. They might be able keep Colon on the PS. The next two largest position groups are WR and CB. I can't imagine the Jets keeping fewer than 6 of either. If one of the rookies at CB or another position prove to be a great gunner on STs, would the Jets move on from Hardee? Bernard-Converse can play CB or S, so that flexibility could save a roster spot at either CB or S. It's definitely going to be interesting. There will probably be a surprise or two that will have some Jets fans up in arms, and a painful loss or two.
Great post. It's super early but the team is probably 90% set. There is talent at every level on this team. I will say that I think Sherwood makes the team. He's the primary CJ backup and had been decent when on the field.
Do you really expect the Jets to enter the season without a capable backup QB? Are you suggesting they'd just wait to dig up a has been if Rodgers is knocked out for a few weeks?
I wouldn’t be surprised if Breece Hall starts the year in IR and I don’t see anyone poaching Streveler from the PS. I’m pretty sure OL Price makes the roster. He’s someone who Hackett brought from GB to Denver and from Denver here. As a reminder, here’s what positions our 53 occupied last year. QB (3): RB (4): WR (6): TE (4): OL (8) DL (11): LB (4): CB (6): S (4): ST (3) For shits and giggles here’s Denver’s 53 last year. LBs and DL will be skewed since than ran a 3-4 Quarterbacks (2) Running Backs (4) Wide Receivers (6) Tight Ends (4) Offensive Line (9) Defensive Line (5) Outside Linebackers (6) Inside Linebackers (4) Cornerbacks (5) Safeties (5) Specialists (3)
