Now that Joe Douglas failed putting together a competent offensive line yet again, we cannot rely on Zack Wilson to be our backup Qb, we need to get a competent backup Qb in case Rodgers goes down and the playoffs are in reach. Rodgers got hurt last year with a competent line, so the risk is very much there for him to get hurt with a incompetent line. It was a huge downgrade to go from White to Zack Wilson as our Backup Qb.
I've been working USFL games this season... and I was impressed by Alex McGough of the Birmingham Stallions. He's been on a few NFL team's roster but never stuck. I have no idea how one goes about picking up a player off a USFL squad. https://overthecap.com/player/alex-mcgough/7105
The Jets probably feel the are set at Qb: Rodgers Wilson Boyle The only way a Vet gets brought in is if the Jets trade or cut Wilson. Boyle is friends with Rodgers and will be the guy who helps Wilson vs Rodgers learn the offense. I do like the Fordham Qb they brought in and think he can compete/beat Streveler out + make the PS.
We should get a reliable veteran QB to back up Rodgers. Maybe Zach will see the light and at least get to the level of a good backup, but he wasn't there last year, and we can't risk a situation where Rodgers misses a month, and that causes us to miss the playoffs. Of course I don't actually expect Douglas to do it, but he should.
They should have signed Minshew early as a starter/backup possibility. He went cheap--1yr 3.5mm I believe.
Get somebody, anybody other than Zach Wilson. If he is our backup, it will be negligence on behalf of Joe Douglas.
I dont know who is legitimately available, but someone definitely needs to be brought in. Unless Zach has improved big time in the offseason, it would be a disaster if Rodgers got hurt.
I said this in another thread but this is Douglas's biggest fuck up so far this offseason, ensuring that we are one of those "well if ____ goes down we are screwed anyway" teams. It didn't have to be that way. This roster is too talented (with our best players making minimal money outside of Q soon) to go into a season with the worst backup QB situation in the league. I would hope we can at least lure a Teddy Bridgewater into riding Rodgers coattails to a ring as our "break glass" guy but I don't think this front office has any desire to move on from Wilson and Boyle. So because of that, we are now one of those "well if ____ goes down we are screwed anyway" teams.
Because of horrible roster management in building this QB room. You can't cut Zach, but you could have at least tried instead of signing Tim fucking Boyle.
Tim Fucking Boyle serves a purpose on this team as currently constructed. Someone like TB’s role would be “go hang out over there jic we need you.
And if we need him, the season is over. It didn't have to be that way but that's what the front office and coaching staff chose, and that was a huge mistake.
Boyle blows. If he sees the field the season is toast. he might not make it out of TC though.... Yes they need a backup, you would hope the guy selected no.2 overall could slot in there though and not be terrible but it is sadly a concern
Capable vets are always available in a pinch, no need to waste a roster spot. The FO and I disagree with you and the average casual fan. We can agree to disagree and move on.
