He asked, so I answered him. The point is not who the players are (although, to a certain extent, it is part of the point - like Wirfs) ... the point is that you need to devote major resources ... and not just shrug your shoulders and say, "Oh well, the guy I really liked is gone so I guess we'll worry about OL next year." That is how you get 15 years of a shitty offensive line. You have to say that you're gonna address it early and you're gonna keep on addressing it early until it is addressed. That is how you fix a problem.
Not agreeing with the linemen Douglas has brought is one thing, but to question his willingness to invest in the OL when he's now used 2 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder, plus a huge (top 5 for his position) FA contract is just being out of touch with reality IMO
At the press conference JD mentioned he can play all over interior. This could be interesting. If Laken continues to suck, he might slide to RG. Or if AVT is forced to play RT or hurt again, he could come in at LG. This versatility can really help us this year.
A good offensive lineman will get on the field unless they’re severely physically limited and he’s not. I kind of like the idea of AVT becoming the right tackle of the future. He’s an extremely talented guy. Even though we’ve been terrible at doing so, it’s much easier to plug a spot at guard than tackle.
Something to watch out for: https://247sports.com/college/wisco...-John-Michael-Schmitz-Brett-Neilon-192368643/ Both shoulders labrum surgeries. Hopefully both are better than before.
It is going to be hard to take him away from the Center position. He's already making all the calls, I'd just keep him there myself. The height makes him unique but this franchise has a history of unique centers. Mawae was tall and lanky almost as a center. He would get out there and pull. I could see this guy being used in the same way
another thing about his length that intrigues me, more and more teams are spreading the interior out and then hitting with a delayed blitz, a longggg center like this kid could just throw a paw out and slow that delayed rusher down just enough
