Watching some of his physical tools on you tube, ok I can see a very good amount of talent. Having never seen or heard of him before. Abraham was heavier, but I’m trying to convince myself that the Jets organization knows what they are doing with this pick. At best McDonald could have the impact Abraham had for us back in the early 2000’s. Is that unfair?

I thought the guy we traded up for in the first round last year was our new John Abraham.

Fair enough. I guess we are doomed. I was trying to be positive. Kid might be special.

Negativity has been a laughing stock for our beloved franchise. The Bengals have risen, the Bills have risen, why can’t we? We have Aaron Rodgers who wanted to come here. The kid McDonald is our pick. Perhaps he can be special or at worst John Abraham. Which wouldn’t be the worst thing.

JAbe was 6'4" 259 with room to grow when the Jets drafted him. He had 20 lbs on MacDonald.

MacDonald is one of several guys in the same weight range with similar skillsets. He's a guy you take if he naturally falls into the range he's value at. Cherry-picking him was another nauseating JD move. He's doing this a lot lately.

He was playing out of position and is still his school's sack leader.

I am OK with the pick considering how important getting after the QB is, just because JJ didn't immediately turn into a double digit sack guy has no bearing on whether this guy will/won't. He will be part of a rotation where they can bring him along slowly and keep him fresh...

the league has changed a lot though since Abraham. You don’t necessarily need to be 260 lbs off the edge

I thought Matt Milano was the smallest, weakest LB that would never make it in this league. He’s the best in our division

Watching tape on McDonald, he's not afraid to leverage his length to get home. His spin move is a definite 55 pitch. His other moves didn't really stand out to me, but my eyes aren't as good as the draftniks here. Abe is a pretty high comparison, especially when he found his groove, but that would be a great outcome for the Jets. I'm not even there yet though as I still don't know if they'll have him play on the line or as a backer. Guess we'll see at camp.

This was a terrible pick. I understand that all the tackles were taken but we had more salient needs than another pass rushing specialist. Kancey was still available at 15 and so was Jack Campbell and Christian Gonzales. Mcdonald was not projected to go that early in the first round and as aI said we drafted Johnson and Clemons last year. Most analysts think this wa a bad pick and I agree.

Looks like Abraham was 252 when he was drafted, so not quite 20 lbs. More like 13 lbs, which sounds better to me.

Yes I am worry about having spend so much draft capital on situational players like him. If he was a 2nd round pick or even a 4th round pick, it would be fine but is he really improving our defense that much? It seems like overkill and watching the Jets invest heavily on ARod and to let him with no more support and expecting to turn the 32th overall offense into a super bowl contender all by himself seem like wishful thinking. I was very satisfied with the Arod trade but now I feel we will fall short offensively again.

Seems like just yesterday most here said repeatedly, if the top three OT are gone, give me the best pass rusher or a WR.
So here we are, OTs gone, we get a DE who led the league in sacks even playing out of position, a demon not afraid to fight inside and outside, who dominated at the trial and combine, and we are bitching. Go figure

LOL so true …. Jets fans are very fickle. Why? Because the franchise hasn’t won a SB in 55 years so I can’t fingerprint and blame the negativity. I questioned the pick myself. Maybe he does become Abraham part 2. In the meantime the Jets better be concentrating on OL for round 2. Question is OT, G, or C because realistically any one of those would fit into the starting OL one way or the other …

@Brook! you should change the title to “our Bruce Irvin”… his measurables, draft spot, and fan reaction are identical to Irvin

Hey my friend. That would be disrespectful to the OP. But he is willing to change it based on your suggestion, I will gladly do it. :)

JJ is more like a shaun ellis then an abraham. overall good rusher and great against the run, mcdonald is the abraham, elite edge speed rusher but weak against the run.
Jets will mostly use lawson and JJ and clemons, then unleash huff and mcdonald off the edge on obvious pass plays

Well you are absolutely correct with your post, but my intent was to keep it Jets related. Abraham was the guy that came to mind in past drafts when I started to think of McDonald

Besides, it's not that AR and his successor would have had a clue on how to use the best WR in the class. Edge class is deep, which makes pick even more puzzling.
