Las Vegas Review-Journal on Twitter: "BREAKING: The Oakland Athletics have zeroed in on Southern Nevada, signing a binding purchase agreement for land just west of the Strip where a major-league ballpark could be constructed. https://t.co/p7ARgL8S5G" / Twitter
This has pretty obviously been the plan for quite a while. Everyone shares blame - the team spends no money, and neither the county nor the fans have exhibited much interest in keeping the team in Oakland for many years - but they've been remarkably successful on the field using what they have for quite a while. When you win 97 games in both 2018 and 2019 and still rank 27th and 24th, respectively, out of 30 teams in home attendance, you can't stay. More air conditioned baseball.
First the Raiders and now the A's. Vegas is becoming quite the sports town with the Golden Knights, Raiders and now the A's. Won't be long before an NBA team is there. It has to be air-conditioned baseball. Could you imagine playing baseball outside in June, July, and August especially. Nothing better than running around outside in 120-degree weather
Wow, the A's have gone from Philadelphia to Kansas City to Oakland and now to Las Vegas. I wonder if there's any other professional sports franchise that has moved that many times.
I think the Sacramento Kings would come pretty close. Maybe the NJ Devils. Arizona Cardinals come to mind. No KC connection there, though.
Good call on the Kings - they have had four homes (Rochester, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Sacramento). The Devils and Cardinals have only had three, which is of course all that the A's have had so far.
Kings/Royals is a really interesting franchise. I cannot say I've ever seen one of their games or paid attention to them in any way. But the history is pretty fascinating. They've played in some of the most obscure minor-league cities, like Rochester and Sacramento that will never sniff another major league team. They also played some split seasons in Omaha Nebraska of all places. Fun fact, Otto Graham played for the Rochester Royals for one season while he was waiting for his rookie football season to start. Naturally, they won the championship that year.
I just hope they don't change their uniforms. I like basically every iteration they use, but the softball white home jersey is easily one of the best in all sports. Always rooted for the A's when not against the Yankees.
NFL Oakland Raiders: . gone..... NHL California Golden Seals: gone...... NBA Golden St. Warriors (was Oakland; now SF): gone...... MLB Oakland Athletic's: going, going, gone....... No need to fret just yet; professional sports still abounds...in Oak-town.. https://www.oaklandrootssc.com https://www.oaklandsoulsc.com Oakvegas: Shithole-by-the-Bay
The Philadelphia 76ers used to be the Syracuse Nationals. The Royals v. Nationals was a rivalry given the proximity of the cities and the similar names. The Rochester Royals were one of the first American professional sports teams to sign a black player, were talking before Jackie Robinson broke the barrier in baseball even. They got a lot of shit on the road because they were in the NBL, the pre cursor to the NBA, which had a lot of teams in the midwest
Did not know that. The 76ers pushed the Philadelphia Warriors out to San Francisco, where they ultimately became Golden State. I believe at one time they played some games in San Diego.
Just watched about 75% of the 3 games of the Yanks-A's series. Good lord, the A's are atrocious. Like, bad for the sport bad.
