I gotta say, I am flabbergasted at how many people on here are not only in favor of this, but are actually excited about the idea of signing up to guarantee you will not have a franchise qb for the foreseeable future. This is crazy to me. The only way I would sign Carr is as a bridge QB to pair with Anthony Richardson or some other first round qb.
I have always thought that signing Carr would always have coincided with a mid-round developmental QB to ride the bench for a few years. Give Carr two years as a bridge before letting whomever it is take over. I don't think I'd take one with a first because I still want the Jets to draft someone to help them to compete this year. Second round QB is definitely in play for me though if someone the Jets likes falls. Plan A is Rodgers for me, but I have no clue what the darkness will show him. Part of me thinks he's going to end up back on GB. Same with Lamar.
If the Jets are really serious about being committed to Zach, I think that's your "mid round developmental QB". Although if somebody they really like is there is the mid rounds they might also take him as insurance. I agree on your Plan A.
And that was a down year for him, mainly because he didn't get to play the last 2 games of the year. Go back to his 2021 stats to see just how much of an upgrade he'd be. 4,804 yards, 23/14 TD/INT ratio, with a 68.4% comp %. That's almost double the production we got from our QBs last year.
After watching the Jets strike out on Darnold and now Wilson. I would sign up for Carr as a FA signing. He had 3,522 yards 24 TD's and 14 INT's last year. He is not on the level of Mahomes. Allen, Burrow but he is a good QB. He would certainly be a big upgrade over what the Jets have now. Carr is also only 31 so it's not like they are getting someone past their prime. If he gets a 4-year deal, I am OK with that.
I don't believe they are legitimately serious about Zach. I think they are going to try to move him. The two years Carr is guaranteed will be the last two years of Zach's deal. I doubt they'll be giving him the fifth year, so he'll be a FA. Can't imagine he's back on the Jets after that. Unless there are injuries, I wouldn't be surprised if Zach played his last legitimate snap with the Jets.
I would not be shocked if Zach is traded as part of a draft day move up…say if a decent QB is slipping in round one, or is there in round two… JD has shown he will trade up for a guy he wants…so I wouldn’t put it past him. I’d rather use the 13th pick on the best OT on the board but after that it’s anything goes I think…
Zach is not the first highly drafted potential FQB to bust and won’t be the last. There are just not enough FQB available, I hope Jets move on from him and draft another QB with 3rd or 4th round pick. It’s been a good philosophy for other teams, no reason it can’t be used by Jets. If Carr accepts their offer, it’s a good strategy. Carr is the holdover that can have success with current roster and Joe can keep drafting quality players and keep looking for the FQB.
Maybe not the first but I bet Joe will draft another developmental QB in later round if value is there.
agree whatever value he may have is very low… that’s why I thought as part of a package … like a throw-in mostly just to get him off the roster. But yeah…not much value there
Pros of Derek Carr: - Won't cost draft picks & other assets - Cheaper contract - More often than not in top 10 in completion percentage and top 15 in QB rating - 8 years younger than Aaron Rodgers, has plenty left in the tank - Above average QB that will make the Jets a contender Cons of Derek Carr - Not as good as Rodgers in bad weather - Longer term contract, so Wilson is likely given up on and traded for pennies on the dollar - Potential locker room divide due to his religiosity - Last season wasn't good I honestly see no reason to wait on Rodgers, but I wouldn't be upset if they did wait, but they shouldn't wait long. The longer they wait, the more likely Carr will be to sign elsewhere. Don't play his game, just sign Carr now and avoid the drama. In Carr's down year he had 24 TDs and 14 picks. If Zach could do this, we'd all be elated, and that's not even that good! Just shows you that we're used to garbage here, so even a mediocre / above average QB would make a world of difference. Remember, this team WAS winning games with Zach before the slew of injuries.
Josh Rosen went for a 2nd and 5th after his rookie year. Since then he's been worthless, but still in the league bouncing around practice squads. Zach is in his third year, but he was drafted higher. Maybe, if were lucky, we could get a 6th?
Josh Rosen fetched a 2nd and a 5th after being terrible in his first year, so I'm not buying a 5th or 6th. That's just Jets fans being negative. Teams will trade a 2nd+ for the potential of the #2 overall pick alone.
You beat me to it! Yep Rosen was horrible and they got a 2nd and 5th for him. So did Sam Darnold. Wilson has only 22 games experience, his ceiling is still high, despite his recent play and struggles. Jets get a 3rd round pick at absolute lowest for him.
