Not yet uncle D. They are 16.5 and got their permits. They will take the Driving Test in August this year. I doubt they will get it right away I am OK with handing my Accord to them but wife is scared because my Honda is truly bare bones. No safety features and it is a Sedan. We will hand them my wife's car which is a 4 years old Nissan Rogue. And we will buy my wife a new car most likely Honda CRV or Toyota RAV 4.
If you can buy a new car cash, interest rates now are bad. But sticking with what you have might be the best bet right now.
With all due respect, I think you’re overthinking the safety features. Lane assist and all that shit shouldn’t be relied upon. If it’s relied upon too much, I think it makes the driver worse. The car slowing down automatically because you’re texting sounds messy. Blind spot warning, teach your kids to check their blind spots before changing lanes. It’s all nice in theory until you switch lanes relying on the blind spot warning on your mirror and the chip is malfunctioning.
JV it is not me. It is my wife. I am happy to spend cash and fix my Honda and drive it for another 10 years. Same for my boys. But my wife is over protective and I gotta respect that.

No I get it. But I’m telling you that while the features do exist, half of it is just them marketing to your wife that it’s safer. When in reality, relying on those features (especially for new drivers), is a detriment to them becoming good drivers.

I wouldn't buy a new car. I've got a 12 year old beamer im about to $2500 into. I thought about selling it, I could get a really good price for it, but i can't justify spending so much on a new car. The prices are insane, it morally just doesn't sit right with me. Not so much about expense but about value. Would i value a new basic car enough to spend 40k? Would i value a nice car enough to spend 70k? I just can't do it
It might be worth it to check out auto actions in your area. You can get a pretty nice car for a fraction of the price and you are just on the hook to repair existing damage. There are many vehicles that have cosmetic damage only.
I got rid of a 20 year old Accord last year and got a 2022 Toyota. Real nice ride, but the electronic assists and alarms are really annoying. I don't drive often enough to spend the time to figure out how to disable them, but the worst is the automatic cruise control slow down. That drives me absolutely bonkers.
Thanks guys. For now I will fix the Honda and worry about this again when kids pass their driving test and get their licenses.
All of these new features kind of scare me. One thing, it’s gonna be expensive to fix them when the warranty is up , but I feel like they could end up causing accidents if they malfunction and go skynet.
I haven't done any police auctions, but you're probably right. Buying a nice car at a police auction raises my chances of being mistaken for a homeboy and shot, everybody has a gun in this town.
