To his credit, he did get the most of of Wentz. When Carson came to Indy, his rating was 73. In Indy it went back up to 95. Then in Washington after he left - back to crap, 80. The thing is: it's not like there are great QBs to choose from. I am pretty sure Jets will ty to get the best FAs universally, like Carr and Jimmy, and if not will have to settle for someone worse, with or without Reich as on OC. The pickings are slim if you miss on top talent in the draft with high pick either way. I think you've just analyzed the situation and arrived at the correct conclusion: either way Saleh is a goner if they fail. So, why would he care if it is Reich replacing him or someone else? The only logical step is to get the best one you can, who can improve the offense. That (assuming D is good and team as a result does well) and only that will loosen the noose around his neck. Now, I agree that there has to be some element of trust working together, taking inputs, etc, so that is something they have to vet out during interview process. Maybe if Reich implies during the interview, I am the head coach of the offense, and Saleh needs to fuck off and focus on defense, he may be passed up, we have no way of knowing it. End of the day I do believe that if it is not Reich it will still be someone with successful experience coordinating offenses. I am not going to lie, I am a little worried hearing the rumors about numerous unqualified candidates with no OC experience, and also some Miami QB coach who failed miserably with Lawrence and was mediocre to bad with Russ and Stafford. We need to do better.
Having a "Head Coach" for the offense and one for the defense is a recipe for dysfunction and failure. Did they not learn this with Gase and Williams? If they think they need someone to fill that role, officially or unofficially, they should just go ahead and replace Saleh now. It shows that they don't think he can be more than a glorified DC, so why pay him a HC salary and essentially provide him with OJT?
The evidence from last season suggests that Saleh is in over his head as a head coach. The area of the team that improved is the area he understands. Every other area of the team ranged from mediocre to an outright disaster. That's because he didn't know how to avoid those outcomes because they weren't in his area of expertise.
The more I think about it, the more I agree with this. It's all well and good to hear him him say "I take responsibility", but in reality he isn't, he isn't capable of it (at least not at this point in his development). To really take responsibility would require him to know enough to step in when he sees something is wrong and to address it then, which he clearly didn't do with the offense. Again, IDK if they're planning on firing him, but they might just be waiting to see which HC candidates shake loose.
'23 is Saleh's last stand. He can't have another collapse, or another shit season. The injury excuse won't fly again either as all teams have them but some teams adjust and overcome and some don't. JD had better be paying attention to what's happening on the field and be ready to pull the trigger if it comes to that or else his job will get iffy too. Still not sure why Woody didn't just clean house and start over but hey, he pays the bills so he can do what he thinks is best even if his football acumen isn't his strong suit.
We coulda had Sean Payton a Super Bowl winning coach and instead we are stuck with a coach who choked 6 straight and took a timeout home with him when trailing in a close game, what a disgrace this organization is.
