We knew this was coming but were unsure how it would play out. We picked up his 5th year for 9.5 million, and could have retained him in 2024 with a franchise tag. But he wants a multi year top DT contract before next camp. “Everybody knows I’m a team guy. Everybody knows that I believe in the team and want to put the team first and different things like that, but I do want to get a contract done before the offseason program,” Williams said. “I feel like I deserve to get a contract done before the offseason program just because I did everything right on the field, everything right off the field, and just having the organization behind me just like I’m behind them to show that they really support me and different things like that is an amazing thing for me. I just want to be compensated for what I am." If this plays out were looking at paying him around 25 million a year. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/jets-quinnen-williams-wants-contract-170634736.html
I agree he deserves it. But we have to understand our cap is tight and we cant pay Quinnen and bring in a Jackson, Carr, or Garrappalo. Might have to let that stuff go.
We can afford it. It’s not your money, guys. The Saints were over the cap and in absolute cap hell for 4-5 years. The league didn’t send the IRS after them to give them the death penalty and cancel games.
he deserves it. I think JD will do the smart thing and lock him down. I think we extend on what he has left (1 year 9.5 mil) and he'll be a bargain for 2023 but will get more thanks to a signing bonus. I'd extend him 4 years personally. that locks him in through the 2027 season. he'll be 30 and still at the age for another big contract. give him 4 years 100 million, guarantee half of it and give him a nice bonus (maybe 20 mil) it'll make him the 2nd highest paid DT behind donald
The things is, it depends what Q wants. He is not a free agent just yet. He had only one elite year out of four. We have his rights for a 5th year at 9.5 mil. We might as well see if he can put two great years together. At that time we will also know whether this team can contend. If Q wants a contract early, before he even hit free agency, for the Jets to incur the injury risk, for the Jets to incur the one year great performer risk, he needs to take a little less than he would if he were a free agent. I suspect contract negotiations will not be easy otherwise.
Well as @Br4d said in the Lamar thread, maybe this is the incentive the Jets need to offer him to the Ravens for LJ. That said, I'm not saying Quinnen doesn't deserve his payday, or even that the Jets shouldn't try to keep him, but as big an impact as he's made this year on the DL, it's nowhere near the impact Jackson would have on the offense. And yes, it would also likely take something in addition to QW to get Jackson, but hopefully not valuable draft picks that could be used to improve the OL.
Today is the start of offseason meetings and Quinnen Williams is skipping them https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id...n-williams-skips-start-jets-offseason-program I dont really blame him, he deserves a contract. Hopefully this Rodgers circus gets resolved quickly so everyone will be assured either way whether they can pay Williams or not
He's smart to hold out. He knows Jets are all in with AR, and no way they don't have Q on the other side of the ball. He's just as important. He'll get paaaaaaid.
He is right to not be showing up the voluntary offseason workouts but I also have no doubt he’s going to get paid. He’s the anchor of our defense and one of the best defensive players in the league. He’s not going anywhere.
Muhammad Wilkerson was last 1st rounder to get a second contract with Jets. Yeah, we all remember how quickly that relationship soured, but pretty wild to think its been that long. Probably not a coincidence that time period parallels Jets playoff drought.
