Mike White is a goner, rightfully so. We need a real QB, the fact Mike White is an option for us is far more a damning conviction of Zach than an endorsement of White. Add to that the fact that if we don’t make the playoffs next year then jobs will be on the line, there’s no way we’re rolling with MW as our starter. The number for Daniel Jones that I’m hearing is 3 yrs 90m, about 60m guaranteed. That puts MW at about 3 yrs 45m. If we pay him that we’ll be between 20-30m at the QB position for Zach and MW. That’s disgusting honestly. If we’re going to be that heavily invested at the QB position then they’re gonna do it with. Proven guy like Garroppolo. My opinion for what it’s worth- We should unload Zach if we can, just to get rid of his contract. Bring in Garroppolo to hold shit down and draft another QB this year or next.
That's not even close to being true. Allen is built like a tank. Rodgers knows how to avoid a rush. White didn't get hit any more than Wilson. For all Wilson's faults, and there are plenty, he can at least escape the pocket. White is a fucking statue.
Yeah get rid of a guy who is injury prone for another guy who wants 25-30 mil a year who is more injury prone to play behind the worst offensive line in the league, and have the worst Qb in the league be his backup, lets do it!
Mike has a heart of a fighter the mental toughness of a true leader but has a body thats just not .....sorry smart Pass here IMO getting Payton in here or Harbaugh to make THAT crucial QB decision is way more paramount and intelligent than to poll the armchair GMs of us fans
Why couldn't you have White and Wilson in the QB room together? White toughs it out with FIVE broken ribs. When healthy he is a competent QB. Locker room loves him, he wants to be here. Carr sucks in weather and Garoppolo is always injured. Spend the money you would need to spend on these retreads to revamp the OL and getting more WR weapons. Wilson stays in the corner reading his books. Can't cut him in 2023, $20 million in dead money. In 2024 the cap hit is $11mil. End of next season either White is the new Cousins, Garropolo or he's finished. Then the Jets can bring in another QB or give the keys to Wilson with a much better team around him.
I want to him back as a backup, but his injury history is frightening. He looked like a solid QB when he was on the field save for the Seattle game, which now can largely be explained by broken ribs. I think what to do with him depends on how things fall with the Jets QB situation and free agency. I don't think he's getting a multiyear deal anywhere so he won't be expensive. For some comparison of good backup QB contracts, Geno Smith is making 3.5m, Brissett is making 4.6m, Trubisky is making 7.4m. All of these guys have done more in the NFL than Mike White so this is around his range. Nobody is paying him 10m/yr. I still believe he's at least a backup-caliber QB with potential to be more if he can stay on the field
I can see all that; the problem that will remain is the price Wilson will still be getting based on nothing he's done since draft day. Not much that can be done about that though. The most expensive thing about White, who has outperformed Wilson for two years now, will be seeing him succeed elsewhere. I don't want to see him get away because the Jets won't beat the lowball price you mentioned. I don't know who White's agent is but I don't see White having a problem with a highly incentivized contract, he's got plenty of confidence.
White had two great games, a couple okay games he lost, and a couple completely shitty games. He is injury prone and not reliable. I would consider bringing him back as a cheap #2 next year if it was a very cap friendly contract.
What does the price Wilson will still be getting have to do with Mike White worth? If White had performed on good/great level, it wouldn't matter that Wilson was better by paid. And why you are assuming that White will succeed elsewhere? What are you basing that on? His 75.4 passer rating? His 2-5 record as a starter? His 8 TD's against his 12 INT's? His interception rate of 3.9? By any metric there is, White is a below average QB and that has nothing to do with Wilson.
Call me old fashioned but I like to pay the guys who perform better more money than the guys who don't. Unfortunately it doesn't always work out that way. I'm assuming nothing about who will succeed or who will fail - I haven't seen enough of either White or Wilson but I've seen almost enough of Wilson for me to be leaning the other way. You may think that White and Wilson have nothing to do with each other but as long as they're on the same team that's going to be a tough sell. You forgot to mention that Wilson is even farther below average than White.
The locker room loving White and not so loving Wilson is the main reason you don't want both of them in the locker room next year.
Either White is a JAG, or he's decent when healthy. But if it's the latter, then he's also injury prone. Either way, unless he wants to stay on as a backup, just let him walk. I get the Jets have been starved of good QB play for so long that y'all have forgotten when a franchise QB looks like, but he's not it.
Why should that matter with regard to the discussion? White's past performance indicates what he is worth. If another team is willing to overpay then so be it. Wilson has already been paid and has nothing to do with the discussion.
Keeping White and Wilson is going to be similar to keeping Todd and Robinson. Split locker room and a year or more in the doldrums due to that.
