That last game that he played bad it turns out he had FIVE broken ribs (1 for old injury.) So we cant really blame him for his bad performance. Would have been great to see a few more games from him healthy. I think he can be an average to good starter for us. Would anyone at this point be shocked if he turned out to be better than Zach when its all over? The Jets have been so historically bad with QB decisions. Looks like its possible we gave up on Darnold too soon. Im not so sure that people on this board wouldnt make a better choice. So what do we do now?
Given he had 5 broken ribs and actually was ruled for this weekend because of it, it appears his horrendous performance last week can be explained by the injury. 3 other performances were good to very good. Mike said he wants to be back. I still think he can be a Kirk Cousins type guy. But given his small sample size and injuries, plus he did perform poorly in his last outing, which will probably cost him, I doubt anyone offers a large contract. I wonder if he can be extended for 3 years 15-20 mil deal or so with maybe 10 mil guaranteed? I would definitely try to bring him back without breaking the bank.
I think the Jets have to let the market decide about Mike White at this point. I also think you either bring back White assuming he is affordable or ZW. The locker room has a dog in the fight and as long as he's here he'd better be the dog you have leading the pack.
The Jets should let White test the free agency market, with the intention to resign him ONLY if he gets low balled in the market. Chances are he'll get something from a team that is more than the Jets should spend on him. But, at this point, he's far too injury prone to go into next year as the starter, and for better or worse, we shouldn't be signing anyone to come in here and be the backup QB, which is the job that Zach Wilson should be holding down next season. With Wilson on the roster, we should be looking to sign/trade for a vet who can come in and be the starter while Wilson serves as the backup. A third QB should be added to the roster via the draft to round out the QB room.
The guy is Matt Moore but less durable. Capable backup that can win a game here and there and look great doing it. But otherwise he's mediocre. And his frame worries me. I feel like he will be injured every year unless he can learn to avoid the rush. I think if we sign a vet QB, White will be gone. For better or worse Wilson will be on the team next year. A vet should win any QB camp battle and that would leave White and Wilson as backups. I doubt White would want that. Someone will offer him a backup job with a clearer path to the #1 position. Again, that's my opinion.
Do you really want to decide on which quarterback can take this team to the next level based on what some other GM, acting in his own best interest, is willing to pay the guy? Sorry, I'd rather have the guy who can perform the best on the field. Today, that's not Zach Wilson. The Jets need to be looking to find the best starter; backups will filter down.
He will get paid elsewhere and that team will have a offensive line to protect him and become the next Joe Montana, while the Jets say Wilson greatly improved this offseason and give him the job opening day only to see him further regress. I mean this organization is so predictable.
We're not talking about Zach Wilson. We're talking about White. There are better options for starting QB than White and I'm not talking about Wilson or Streveler. The Jets need to go out and sign a QB who is better than anyone we currently have.
I said right after the game that his poor performance was likely due to him being more hurt than anyone let on. Five broken ribs would attest to that conclusion. He's tough, and a fighter, and desperate to make a case that he can be a starting QB in this league, but after that injury that quest had to be put on the shelf, at least for now. Unfortunately (or fortunately perhaps), MW didn't prove he could be the NY Jets FQB. It's possible, given more time to audition he might prove to be a serviceable starter for some team, but I don't think it will happen with the Jets. Reading the smoke signals issued by the Jets, it seems more likely that they'll hold onto Zach and try to make him what they thought he could be when they drafted him #2 overall, but they're also in a "win now" mode, so they're going to need a proven vet QB to be the starter while that reclamation project goes on, leaving White sort of a 3rd wheel. For his sake I hope he finds a good landing spot that enables him to prove he can be a starting QB.
No, I think it has to do with how much you value a guy like White. If someone is still in the camp that says that he can be THE guy for the Jets, then those people would be inclined to pay him a contract that is competitive with what other GMs might be offering out on the open market. And that's fine if you believe him to be THE guy. For those of us that have seen enough from him to not believe him to be THE guy for the Jets, I'm not going to go give him a competitive offer, which is why I would allow him to test free agency. If he gets low balled by other GMs and doesn't have many really good options, I'd be open to bringing him back on a team friendly deal. But, at the end of the day, I think one GM out there is going to give him a contract that's not worth what we've seen him do on the field along with the injury factor being considered as well. As for Wilson, we're stuck with him for two years. Nobody's trading for him, so we might as well keep developing him.
Talk about whoever you want - the guy I responded to talked both about what offers White may get and the assumption that Wilson would be on the roster.
Jimmy G is going to the Raiders, and Carr is a getting a bag from the Colts/Saints or another team. Not sure there's any other vets? Maybe you try and sign Baker Mayfield or Jacoby Brissett. I think we're going to see MW, Wilson and another mid-round rookie QB drafted if you ask me. EDIT: Now if Lamar is cut loose - Jets should and will probably sign him. He'd be a near perfect fit for this style of offense.
It really doesn't matter at all what value you or I place on White nor does it matter much how Douglas values him because so far, he's done a terrible job of valuing quarterbacks. I think it's too soon to discard either Wilson or White but I've got Wilson at the bottom of the depth chart.
So would Josh Allen, Aaron Rodgers and half the Qb's in these league under this offensive line. If he didn't get hit 12 times a game he would not get hurt as much. How many Qb's can withdstand so many hits a game? No competent Qb is coming here to play under this line for a discount, who want's to get murdered every game? The only way Carr or Grappolo comes is if we give them Aaron Rodgers types contracts and that would be blatanly stupid.
Another drafted QB with 23 year old Wilson also on the roster? No thanks. Either keep Wilson as a developmental guy or trade him and draft another. But not both. I lean towards keeping Wilson as that 3d developmental guy. Why you ask after he failed in first two years? Because he is 23 years old and may be younger than another guy you will get in a 3d round, who will be quite raw and may need to sit too. While chances Zach will succeed are now very low, I am not sure a 3d round raw QB that will be available has a higher probability. Probably not. I also doubt Zach can be traded for the 3d rounder due to cost. So, we are just better off keeping Zach as the 3d development guy AND use the 3d round pick to address numerous needs we have. Unless you are suggesting to trade a couple of first round picks and change to move up to Chicago or Arizona spot to get Stroud. It might actually be the best approach, but I don't see JD doing it given the play-off mandate next year. With 3d developmental QB spot filled by Zach, we still need a good back-up, particularly if we end up with injury prone Jimmy G. This is where I see Mike White. The fact he played like shit due to injury last week I believe limits his contract potential. No team will be bringing him in as a starter now nor paying starter's money, not Just the Jets. He is also not experienced enough to pair him with a top drafted rookie - even now. He said he wanted to be back. I think the Jets are in really good situation to get him as a #2 without breaking the bank with Zach at #3.
And that's the value that you place on White, which is why it's relevant to the discussion. You, and I would venture to guess a healthy number of others here and around the Jets fandom, think White is worth bringing back. So that would necessitate a particular strategy towards getting him another contract. And that's perfectly fine. I feel like I've seen enough to move on, which is why I wouldn't be inclined, were I in Douglas' shoes, to put a whole lot of effort and resources into having him return in 2023. If it could happen a very team friendly number, then sure, but I'd be surprised if that were able to happen. In a perfect world, I'd send both of them packing and do a total reset of the QB room, but since we're only two years into Wilson's rookie deal, we might as well keep him. But, unless he has one of the all-time great training camps next summer, he shouldn't be the QB1. My hope would be, though, after spending the offseason really putting in the work and doing the soul searching that someone in his shoes almost certainly would have to be doing right now, he'd come back and be able to compete for that backup job, which would increase his value both to the Jets as well as to other teams who may be interested in acquiring him via a trade.
