Wtf, I thought barton did pretty good this season, MUCH BETTER then Vilma. If cap isnt an issue then wtf is the problem. I like barton, id be pissed to see him go.
Freeney and Kerney are both awful fits in the 3-4. I don't see why we'd pursue them. Also, Barton is a good player I still don't understand why he is a potential cut. I want to keep all of our current LBs. Draft a passrushing OLB, but don't cut anyone. Depth is key and we have no cap problems so why cut a good player like Barton.
There's no reason to cut Barton, he is an excellent linebacker (maybe better in teh 4-3, but still good), and we have plenty of cap room.
Barrett has to take a paycutt.....i dont see him here if he doesnt....Freeney will be tagged (franchised) w/o question.
I doubt the writer actually got this from the Jets front office they proably just saw our DE's did not have any sacks so they said Kerney and Freeney would be on our radar. Who knows with Barret or Barton I think we will keep both or at least through camp and let them compete for jobs.
Not saying were gunna get Freeney but he could potentially project into a 3-4 OLB and if we got rid of Barton(once again not saying we will) we could then move hobson into the middle(a position that he prolly would be better given his strengths). The sound of having freeney vilma hobson and thomas would be fine with me.
i agree with u that barton is a good player for our team but he can be replaced with smart drafting/signings if he were to be released. such as a lance briggs or adalius thomas signing
I doubt the Jets will let Barton go just like that... We are in need of good players in the defense and to take one out is just straying away from our goal. Tannenbaum is smarter than that. Barrett does need to take a pay-cut however.
Hobson had six sacks, not four and a half. The two snippits, really contradict themselves. They say we're releasing Kimo because he's getting old, yet we're picking up 29 year old Kerney who has never played in the 3-4?
Kerney played in the 3-4 in Atlanta for 2 years I believe. Of course he sucked in that scheme which makes me wonder why he would come here.
Barton played ILB in the 3-4, those players you listed above play OLB in the 3-4, so it wouldn't really make any sense. Hobson had a really good year this year, and I wouldn't mind keeping him at OLB.
Yeah, I doubt Barton will get a pay cut... He has been solid, and if nothing else his bone head plays do add a little nastiness to an otherwise soft D.
i echo this thought. barton was much better than vilma this yr. and barton is fine, we have enough holes on d to try to start finding another ILB to place to our other ILB who we dont know how effective he'll actually be.
IMO witha 3-4 D, I don't see any reason to let Barton go. He has played pretty well, and we need some decent backups. If we can upgrade, keep him as a backup.
I think Barton is the odd man out. Vilma is the quarterback of the defense and invaluable to Mangini. Hobson had a nice season and is a solid starter who can still improve, and Thomas is locked up. They may try to get someone who can do a few more things for a few more years than Barton. I'm just concerned because if a rookie can't step in rather quickly, that might mean Chatham and Kassell, who are less than adequate, assuming a bigger role. It's a dicey situation. I think I'd rather chuck Kassell and draft someone, and try to get Barton back at a decent price. I don't see him getting a pay raise on the open market. -X-
The CS knows how they feel about Barton's performance versus his salary. If the latter outweighs the former, I have no doubt that he would be cut outright. If Barton goes and they're looking to extend Hobson, then I have to assume Victor is moving to the inside. Kerney... I love the guy in a 4-3, but he is 30 now and if he didn't flourish in a 3-4 with the Falcons, while it could be just bad coaching, I don't see the logic in signing him. As far as Freeney goes, I don't know what the guy can do in a 3-4 but I'd love to see him rush the QB from the standing position to see what he could do. Just not at the price of a huge contract.
Freeney really had a miserable year but even if he were available the "name" factor I think his contract would be prohibitive. In 16 regular season games he had 5.5 sacks and 4 forced fumbles, with 3 of the sacks and 3 of the forced fumbles coming in 1 game against the Bengals. He never makes any tackles either.
