Jim Harbaugh to the NFL? Michigan coach expected to head back to pros if offered a job, per report

Multiple NFL teams are reportedly eyeing Jim Harbaugh as a potential coaching candidate.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh could be seeing yet another round of NFL interest after the No. 2 Wolverines' season concluded with Saturday night's 51-45 loss to No. 3 TCU in the Fiesta Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal. If offered a job to return to the pros, Harbaugh is expected to leave his alma mater, according to The Athletic.

"I think it is a done deal if he gets an offer," one source close to the coach told The Athletic.
What is unknown is whether teams who are gathering information on Harbaugh are also planning to make him an offer. Harbaugh has long been named as a potential NFL target in the exploratory phases of a coaching search because of his previous success. Harbaugh was 44-19-1 as the San Francisco 49ers coach from 2011-14.

The Denver Broncos were among the teams "doing homework" on Harbaugh as a potential candidate to fill their coaching vacancy, according to NFL Network. The Broncos were singled out in part because of the connections between Harbaugh and Condoleeza Rice, who is a member of the team's ownership and part of the search committee to replace Nathaniel Hackett. Rice is also a prominent part of the university community at Stanford, where Jim Harbaugh was coach prior to his move to the NFL.

Harbaugh, who has a 74-25 record in eight seasons at Michigan, interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings last season after leading Michigan to its first Big Ten title since Lloyd Carr and the program's first CFP appearance, but in reaffirming his commitment to the Wolverines he declared that NFL flirtations would not be a recurring theme every year.

He told the Detroit Free Press it was a "one-time thing" and though he was intrigued by the prospects of chasing a Super Bowl he was also enthusiastic about pursuing a national championship with the Wolverines. Though Harbaugh himself did not offer details on the dealings with Minnesota, multiple reports indicated that Harbaugh was not offered the job and the franchise eventually hired Kevin O'Connell as its coach.

Now Harbaugh's "one-time thing" claim will apparently be put to the test if any of these franchises doing their homework decide to engage the Michigan coach in their coaching search.

Would love to have a professional calling the shots. Harbaugh would be an epic pick up. If Woody is really angry I hope he opens up the vault and lands a veteran HC and QB.

He would need perhaps a year to get acclimated to the new NFL and all the rule changes BUT, it would establish credibility with both the lockerroom and the fanbase. They would have to give him the keys to the kingdom and that might require a complete revamping of both the CS and the FO. If JD would be willing to work with Harbaugh? We'd be in great shape. I don't think Woody has the balls to do something so radical as go all in on a big name though. Just more of a don't rock the boat kinda owner.

They couldn't make that move quick enough. If he expressed interest in the job tomorrow morning, Woody should sprint to the podium and fire Saleh during his morning press conference and announce Harbaugh.

He left the niners under mysterious circumstances, which most agree was not bending to ownership demands. No way he'd survive, or even want to work for the Johnsons.

I'd love to have him but its a pipe dream. At best he'd use our interest as leverage for a better contract elsewhere.

Someone who is 59-36 and went to a super and comes from
A great coaching tree or someone who is 11-22 and just choked getting us into the playoffs and is going back to Kmart with his receipts what a tough choice

This is Woody's opportunity to finally get this right as an owner. Pay Harbaugh what he wants and get the hell out of the way.

Although, maybe we can get a discount on Harbaugh if we cash in Saleh's receipts.

We are not attracting that kind of coach to this franchise. Get real. You might as well made a poll for Jesus to coach the team.

Money talks. The jets have talent why wouldn’t a good coach want to come here, the jets are built to win now. Better than taking a job where a team is rebuilding. But keep making excuses for the johnsons.

not excuses, not giving them a pass. We have such a bad rep, that no one legitimately wants to come here.

Exactly, when Parcells came back to New York to coach the Jets he was already a legend in this area and knew how to handle the New York media. No big profile coaches want to come to this shit and deal with all that honestly. The Jets are not as appealing as some other places.

Where are you getting 59-36 from and what coaching tree are you talking about? He was a QB coach for Callahan for a year before becoming a head coach in college.

I don’t think it was much of a mystery. Baalke was a backstabbing SOB who wanted his patsy yes man Tomsula in charge. Baalke was pissed Harbaugh was getting the credit. Pederson better watch his back in Jax soon too.

We’ve had at least 3 shots at Harbaugh iirc and I don’t know if we’ve even ever inquired. I doubt woody has the balls to make a move like this.

I'd love to dump Saleh and Douglas and give the keys to Harbaugh. But good luck getting him to take the job (and there's zero chance he'd take it with Douglas still around).

You have to give him a blank check if he’s listening. But I doubt he’s listening. He has a third year QB while most of the roster returns next year + transfer portal acquisitions + a weakened OSU with a first year quarterback.

Jim wants one more crack at a Natty.

I voted yes, but I don't think we have a snowball's chance in hell of him coming here. Maybe he'd go to the Giants but they're not firing Daboll for sure. I think he winds up in Denver if he leaves Michigan.

We're the Kmart of football teams. We make loud claims about how we carry the same brands as the higher quality stores but have lower prices. Sounds good, but everyone knows it isn't true.

I don’t think there’s a coach in college or professional football that I hate more than him. Guy is a total douche.
