"Let's not go sucking each other's ____ just yet".... I am talking about the Salary cap and all of the wishful thinking that goes on here. Particularily in the context of signing Asante Samuel away from the Patriots...

This from Fox Sports.com's NFL Czr's blog yesterday...

    Show them the money
That will be the battle cry of the many an agent come next season with the start of free agency. The league notified the clubs this week in Dallas that next year's salary cap would be $109 million, meaning the 32 teams currently have $655 million collectively to spend to max out to the $3.488 billion allocated under the cap.

San Francisco owner John York's austerity plan has worked wonders, and the 49ers top the list with $41.78 million to spend. After years of salary-cap hell, the Tennessee Titans are next with $39.9 million under next season's cap. This is great news for Fisher, who can pursue some of the league's best free agents. There are 20 teams with about $20 million or more to spend if they choose to do so. Here are the rest of the top ten teams: 3. Buffalo $37.86 million, 4. Arizona $35.2 million, 5. Cleveland $31.9 million, 6. Minnesota $31.5 million, 7. Jacksonville $31 million, 8. Cincinnati $28.8 million, 9. Green Bay $28.36 million and 10. New England $$26.98 million.

Before they make any cuts or re-do some salaries, the Washington Redskins have the least amount of money, $878,730. Amazingly, the Pittsburgh Steelers are next with $1.44 million of cap space.

My point is... There are plenty of teams that are going to be well under the NFL salary cap this off-season....

Good point, but don't count on New England resigning Samuel unless he's willing to play for less than his market value.

Also, there are plenty of free agents besides Mike Turner and Asante Samuel. Just because the Jets don't get one of the top guys doens't mean they can't get some very valuable players for cheap like they did with Dyson last year.

I'm not so sure, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they franchised him....

You just had to rain on our parade didn't you.
I don't care what your situation is, I know the jets are in good cap shape AND don't have any big name guys they need to resign at the end of the year.

There has never been a time where we can try to get big name guys. I hope you guys continue to let good players go thinking you can just restock your roster for less elsewhere

I'm sorry... haha.. Also, the Pats have two first rounders and unless Seattle makes the SuperBowl, NE will be drafting several spots ahead of the Jets...

I don't know about the other teams, I'm just glad we won't have to associate the term "cap hell" with this team for a change. Not having to watch our young marquee talent walk out the door is another bonus. I'd just like to see a few of our guys get signed to long term deals this offseason.

You guys have won the Super Bowl with WRs playing in the secondary, so I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you.

Samuel is worth more to the Jets than to the Patriots.

If the Jets sign him that is talent- in New England and talent+ in New York. If the Patriots sign him it's status quo.

I'm guessing the Jets make a run at him just like Parcells made a run at Curtis Martin, and for the same reasons as listed above.

Franchise numbers on cornerbacks really hurt right now courtesy of Champ Bailey and a few other big movers in the last couple of seasons.

I'd be a bit surprised if the Pats used as much cap space as it would take to franchise him. They might well do the first refusal tag though and match if it came up right.

Dude, you are railing against a steel cage, there is nothing you can do or say that will stop the endless barrage of 'Oooh ooh ooh let's sign this guy!@" threads. It happens every year, regardless of reality.

It really is disheartening though to think that we are in great shape with the cap & with picks in the upcoming draft but NE is in better shape in both areas..

How the hell did they get a #1 for Branch??

Sorry this may be a dumb question, but do these cap numbers inlcude any free agents these teams have to re-sign? so New England are in a great position by that cap space does not include Samuels?

And so even thought there are a lot of teams out there with Cap Space im assuming that we are still one of the better off teams as we have very few starters who we need to re-sign?

Ironically you're right. The Jets were able to hurt NE for '07 by getting Deion out of NE, but the long term effects were actually positive by way of the first rounder. I happen to agree that Branch was no where near being worth a first rounder... Just look up his stats relative to the top receivers in the league this year. He's good to very good..Not even approaching great.

I also happen to think the when the FA season is over, unless he's franchised by NE (which would once again cause a major training camp distraction) then he will end up being the highest paid corner in the leage..Even HIGHER than Champ. That is ridiculous when you read that again..The NFL offseason will be earily similar to the MLB offseason where fiscally reckless teams will spend the money just because they have it.... I think NE should focus their cap space on extending guys like Warren and Wilfork and then try and suppliment their depth at other positions through the draft. The Jets would be wise to do the same with players like Cothcery and Rhodes. Kerry Rhodes is very impressive. I would re-sign him ASAP.

None of this salary cap nonsense will matter this year anyway.
This year's FA crop is considered to be one of the weakest since free agency began. For the few *elite* players available, their own teams will either franchise/tender and the others will sign contracts that a year from now will be obscenely over-priced.

For those expecting the Jets to make a splash, they are going to be dissappointed. The Jets will plug here and there and maybe have one big signing. Just remember, in the salary cap era knowing not who to sign is just as important as knowing who to sign. In many respects, the damages of bad signings take years to wipe away.

To me, one of the benefits of having cap space is to be able to keep one of your own guys who has a breakout season, like a Cotchery, and not having to let him walk.

    That's the main benefit.

High priced free agents rarely significantly improve a team's performance.

The one reason I think the Jets would look to FA to find a corner is the way Mangini has talked about Miller and his technique - he'd obviously prefer to have a guy who knows how to play the position over a rookie who he has to mould over a couple of years.
