I certainly don’t want to give up a ransom for an aging veteran. Lots of other cheaper options for sure. The talent, other than our OL, is pretty much there now. We need a game manager to see this offense hum. That being said, I would like to see MW and whoever we choose compete for the starting nod. Draft another QB, but not too early. This way they can sit and watch until the game slows down for him.
I wouldn't say he's garbage, but your sentiment I agree with. I don't want Carr. Not a good fit in New York.
I agree Colorado, as I've said in the past that I want a veteran to push Mike White, but not this kind of veteran. Carr would have to start and obviously would be paid $30 million or more a year, and that's not ideal as I don't think he's the right fit.
This is a great take. I actually wouldn't mind Jones either. I think the Giants are resigning him though.
EDIT - Misread your post. Sorry. I was talking about Carr since it was a Carr thread, not Adams. I think JV was talking about Carr as well. Adams doesn't have a no trade clause does he?
I'm bumping the post that @dawinner made earlier in this thread to highlight what we'd be potentially be getting if we could get Carr reasonably and he was committed to playing for the Jets in a cold weather environment (of course if either of these two conditions are met then I would say we shouldn't bother with him). And he's only 31, hardly "over the hill". In fact, he's probably entering his prime since he hasn't been seriously injured. He's the kind of vet I could see paying - again, if the price is right. I sure don't want another Neil O'Donnell or Fitzpatrick, or even a Favre who was pretty much washed up by the time he got here. Rodgers? Sure, but he'd cost a fortune in trade assets and salary. Lamar? Maybe, but I still don't trust run-heavy QBs to hold up over time. The only other vet I'd consider is R. Wilson who Denver might agree to unload, but I think he'd cost more than Carr and he's been injured more than a few times. Brady on a 1-2 year deal? Maybe, but again, expensive, although a proven winner. It won't be the worst thing to go into next year with MW as the starter, but I'd prefer someone who has proven to be better.
Compelling fan Youtube video suggesting Raiders Coach McDaniels tanked the season to make Carr look bad. Click on the Watch on Youtube prompt to play. Good stuff.
Ryan is going to be 38 next year and this is the second season in a row he has stepped down some. I don't think he is likely to give the Jets a particularly good season next year. He gets sacked a fair amount and the Jets OL is a work in progress. Rodgers will be 40 next year and he took a step back this year also. Not everybody is Tom Brady.
Carr is one of those guys who I've looked at and always come away thinking what is the fuss with this guy? He looks a worse player than his stats suggest he is. Stafford, as he was brought up earlier, always looked like a better player than his stats said he was to me. Of course, Carr would be better than anything the Jets have had recently (although jury still out on MW) but I'm not sure if he's worth the likely increased cost over someone like Minshew, who you could legitimately hold a genuine QB competition with. Definitely not giving anything up for him and due diligence needed on cold weather issues before I'd seriously look at him. I don't think Carr makes you an instant top tier contender, just a bit better. I guess it depends what MW does with his 2+ game audition. Does he show enough to say he could be a legit option for a QB competition? He's not going to be handed the job with anything short of winning it all.
Getting a couple of cheap additions to compete with White feels like the best answer. Sign a vet to a 2 year deal at a reasonable price and draft a 4th rounder to develop into a backup over the next few years. Then maybe White or the vet or the pick surprises us. 3 thumbs in the pie gives a decent chance at pulling out a plum.
Now Minshew is as good as Carr? Carr has played for the awful raiders and has still been successful. Is still young enough. Blows my mind anyone could bring up 45 going on 46 yr old Brady (would be most Jets move ever to have Brady screw them one more time), Rogers who is going to be 40 and has complained about MLF brother for last two years. The best thing about those two is they would tell MLF to screw off. Matt Ryan?, Minshew over Carr, and now Mike White over Carr. Insane. If you can get Carr you get him. ZW behind him as a project and draft mid rounder. Solidify position for 5-6 years and develop a QB behind him. Get out of QB misery.
I asked this yesterday and it was mostly rhetorical but I do actually want to hear the pro-Carr opinion. With a healthy Mike White we are a wildcard team. Replace Mike White with Carr… Are we anything more than a wildcard team? Are we better than the Chargers? The answer to both of those questions is no in my opinion so there’s absolutely no point in spending an absurd amount of money or even giving up draft picks/players to bring in a quarterback that doesn’t raise your ceiling all that much.
Carr is indeed the most realistic best case scenario for the Jets. To come away with Carr after JD just shit the bed with selecting Zach would be a face saving move. Durable 32 year old (next year), whose worst season aside from the rookie year was essentially the Fitzmagic type year. And average season better than that - that's a coup for the JD and the Jets. It doesn't really get much better than that unless you draft a star. Brady is old and is not coming to NY anyway - he might actually come to the Raiders. Lamar Jackson and Rodgers is a pipe dream. Yes Lamar is not paid yet, but they can tag him and he will be. GB drafted Love, but Love is a late first round pick, who actually sucked in College and has a small probability of success, while Rodgers is still great, so I don't think GB is that dumb. Daniel Jones most likely will get extended to stay with Daboll. Realistically Carr is the best the Jets can get. If I can sign up now that Carr is our starter in 2023, I would. But... So would other teams. Indy, Atlanta, Washington, Bucks, Panthers, Saints. Even Detroit and Miami could be in the mix depending on what happens there. Where does Carr want to go? We have no idea. And if he does not want to come here? We have Jimmy G as the next best guy, and maybe that's the direction JD will go next, even though Jimmy is very injury prone. In 6 seasons as a starter, Jimmy was able to finish 2 of them without season ending injury. Getting Jimmy is like playing a Russian roulette with JDs career, except instead of taking all bullets out, but one, you take one out and leave the rest. The problem is, it may actually be worth it if you can't get Carr, because beyond Jimmy we have Mayfields, Sams, Mariottas, Minshews, Bridgewaters, Daltons: basically a back-up level players, who can spot start. That could be straight up suicide. That brings us to Mike White. If Mike finishes the season strong, you have to extend him before he is a FA for the least amount/years possible. You need that insurance. We don't know what Carr is going to do, can't even talk to him until the new League year. If you then can get Carr, get him. Mike White has enough value where you can trade him later if you want unless you grossly overpay. But I feel like if Mike balls out now, you cannot take a chance to let him hit FA market. Carr is far from guaranteed, and picks are slim beyond him.
