you have to wonder about how come some teams can draft QB in later rounds, yet the guy works out....... brady in the 6th in NE, wilson in the 3rd in Seattle, brunell in 6th by GB who wnet to J-ville, hasslebeck in the 6th by GB who went to Seattle, but the best current example: brock purdy in the 7th by SF, with the LAST pick in the entire draft ! are those teams staffed by better scouts, offensive coaching, head coaching, ownership, front offices? Zak Wilson is under a 4 yr contract, with guaranteed money. so, is it possible to still salvage the draft pick by loaning /assigning him to play spring football with a USFL or XFL team? gets training and reps under a different coaching staff, offensive system, and outside the new york city market? unless some other team thinks they can fix him, and make a darnold type trade, should the Jets think outside the box , do something different for a change, and see what happens ?
This offseason either trade him for a late round pick or cut him if there are no takers. That's about it.
It's but even his lack of skill, he's totally lost the locker room and NY devoured him. His presser yesterday was of someone totally defeated.
no thanks. we need to keep picks to draft OL, and a developmental QB, at the very least. still amazed at what SF is doing with a rookie QB, who was the LAST pick in the draft. meanwhile, we waste 6th and 7th round picks on stupid trades.
Yes. You can't have a decades long failure at finding and developing QBs without all of those things missing in your organization. To put it another way: certain teams consistently have successful at finding and developing QBs and some don't. The Jets fall into the latter category obviously. It's beyond frustrating and maddening to long time fans like me that this continues to be a problem. I really thought we had finally turned a corner on this with JD, Saleh & Co. but we haven't. It's almost as if the Jets have made a conscious decision that the most important position on a football team isn't that important to them. Maybe they realize how bad they are at it, and just decided to not even bother trying to identify QB talent...just try to win with defense, and maybe a running game. What I DO know is that I should've stopped rooting for them after Namath left.
Successful QBs drafted late, or undrafted (Warner), were all missed multiple times by every GM/scout in the league.
Really? You don't know Jack if you expect him to think, or for that matter, do anything outside of the box. That's just not how Jack does business. With the Jets latest QB debacle, comparisons with the previous failed Jet regimes are inevitable. In some weird cosmic way, QB busts are attracted to and destined to join this organization, no matter who is calling the shots. For the longest time now, these Jets have their own exclusive landing strip to accommodate QBs whose careers will soon end up done and dusted. Young, middle aged, old - the Jets do not discriminate by age when it comes to permanently staining a QBs career. The only recent QB who managed to escape the curse was Geno Smith, who only took 8 years to fully recover from the notorious Jets QB hex.
I was actually thinking about this mess myself earlier how if the entire world was all about Zach maybe the best thing for him to do would actually to step down to junior varsity and play in one of those other leagues as much as possible and get his confidence back against lesser talent defenses. The Kurt Warner plan as it were. Or almost like another year of seasoning in college. Would never actually happen probably but in theory it might work.
JD drafted a QB in the fourth round and failed. Morgan. I think drafting a QB in any round is a gamble. There are skills that a QB must have in order to make it in the NFL. And you cannot know if a QB has those skills from his college play. Skills like reading an NFL defense and throwing the ball in less than three seconds before your window of opportunity is gone. Also other skills like being able to handle the pressure of a NFL defense, adequate poise, mental toughness etc. You can only find out if a QB has that by playing him in enough regular season games until you find out if he is learning. It took Geno many years to learn how to be a good NFL QB but the Jets wasted a pick on him and now some other team is the beneficiary of his good QB play. All you can see in a QB college play is if he has the arm strength, accuracy, athleticism which makes a QB better but all of those skills can be seriously and negatively impacted by an NFL defense. And not all QBs can play well agains an NLF caliber defense. Do you want to spend a high draft pick on a college QB based on his college play, arm talent and then spend a couple of years developing him to find out if he is going to be good enough? Sometimes that works out but the Jets draft Sanchez at 4 and didn’t work out. Then they tried again with Darnold at 3 and didn’t work out. Then they tried again at 2 with Zach and it’s not working out. Also Geno and Clemens were drafted in round 2 and didn’t work out. Will they keep trying? If you ever draft your FQB then it’s going to cost you a fortune to resign him which will create some holes in other positions because of the salary cap. Better option I think is to go to a proven veteran who is good enough but not too expensive so you don't end up not being able to resign other elite players because your FQB ate too much of the salary cap. Do we want to resign Q and Sauce and other good/elite players?
This is a highly interesting topic and one that is quite perplexing. The only thing missing in your post is LEADERSHIP! You can see a QB's leadership in college. Some great examples of failure are Darnold and Wilson. If you go back and look at the film, see interviews of coaches and teammates you see one thing missing in a lot of the "sunshine" being blown around and that's leadership. I can't recall anyone saying either of those two were leaders. Just because they were QB's and voted captains doesn't make them a leader. A Captain, in college, is more a popularity game as well as the QB gets it by default. Conversely, you heard leadership being thrown around when talking about Lawrence, Josh Allen. Go and dig up some interviews and tape on Purdy. You know what EVERONE said about him? A fire breathing competitor one place said. "A real leader!" Hell, 10 minute conversation with Wilson and you know it's "I" this and "I" that. Me me me me... You can have an arm that will drive a ball through a brick wall but if you can't lead you'll lose the locker room every time. The NY Jets can't find a QB because our scouts are buried in stats. The last LEADER this team drafted was Chad Pennington and look what happened. He didn't have the greatest arm or speed but he got it done. We need to find a LEADER!
Just try drafting a QB in mid rounds and see if it pans out. A big, mobile QB. but focus on LBs, DBs, OLs and a big physical WR in the draft.
